A Wonderful Learning Environment!

Standing behind Nyuraku and his pull along wagon Kai observes the room quietly as the students slowly lift their heads from their Denreishinki, where they were watching the Games, to look at the odd duo clad in white. Through her eyes she was documenting their names, ages, height, weight, vitals, etc. etc. Documenting their current state before the demonstration was about to begin. Oh what luck they have to be front row and center for one of Nyuraku’s experiments, she had no such opportunity during her Academy days, no they were spent dealing with teachers she far surpassed in terms of intelligence.

"IMMORTALITY!!"

Nyuraku opens up with the topic of today’s lecture, one that has even Kai slightly interested. Given the longevity of Shinigami the topic has never come across her mind too often, even when she does enter the field of battle on occasion she doesn’t think much about being harmed. This will be something interesting to listen to and to make notes of for herself, the possibilities of making a being biologically immortal would be truly wondrous.

"What does such a thing even mean? It is the dream of many, a symbol of power to some, to others it is their salvation from their most primal of fears...the fear of death. And so people strive to achieve it, to obtain it in some capacity."

There are few in the history of Soul Society who have managed to become immortal, be it through their Zanpakuto or some outside factor rendering them unable to be killed. Fear of death… That is the major contributor to those seeking this thing known as immortality? What a simplistic and ridiculous outlook to have. The level of experimentation that can be performed on oneself if they were immortal or had an immortal subject has no ceiling of possibilities. So much of her back logged research can be finished if she had such a subject in her possession.

"We are already at a stage where repairing one's feeble flesh and body is a simple feat...but what if we could eliminate the middle man, wouldn't that be something? If, instead of going to the Fourth Division to be patched up your body would simply repair itself on its own, not unlike the regenerative abilities of the arrancar."

Kai puts a finger to her lips and thinks about something, a body that can self regenerate is amazing but if proper safety rails aren’t in place it could get out of hand. The body could attack itself trying to fix things that don’t exactly need to be fixed, it runs rampant and cancerous growths can form or worse. She moves her finger and parts her lips to speak up about this but surely Nyuraku has this in mind already, that's why experimentation exists, the scientific method must be used to obtain desired results.

WHOOOoosshh

The sound grabs Kai’s attention as her head turns to look at a container releasing some sort of pinkish smoke-like substance into the class. Quickly analyzing the properties of said smoke allowed her to determine her body would not be affected by it. Her immune system, in a way, is immortal, there exists no poison, neurotoxins, viruses, foriegn micro species, or any thing of the such that can harm it. Her antibodies destroy all forigen invasion without fail, that said, she decided to take a deep inhale of the smoke. She begins to cough frantically, clutching her chest as she turns away to continue her coughing fit only to turn back to Nyuraku and say…

”Disgust! This smells terrible! Adding a more pleasing smell to this will make people more willing to inhale and taste it! I mean, just look! Everyone is trying to run away. It smells so bad!”

In typical Kai fashion she declares the emotion she is feeling before following up with what she was going to say. She continued to document the students' vitals, taking down notes and additional variables about each one and how they are responding to these new stimuli being introduced to them. As the observations went on she noticed the smoke being vented by some incompetant buffoons who opened the door.

Lost Data!

”Frustration!”

Kai shouts despite her tone or body language displaying anything of the sort. She looked at the one documented as Zhou Feng, making his way into the class like the brute he is. Her head turns, the black voids in her head to scan the one documented as Asahi Kajiyashiki opening the window to vent more of the smoke out of the class. Nothing sours the mood more than wasted materials more so, were they sure it was safe to vent that stuff from the class? Something dawns on Kai as she starts to seem panicked and stressed about something all of a sudden.

”Panic! There is no one outside to collect data on how people will be affected if it is exposed to an unsterile environment! I shall ask for permission to go outside and quickly document this!”

She trots away from the front of the class and towards the one known as Zhou Feng. She knows how these brutes like to feel important so she will do him a kindness and ask for permission to leave. What terrible luck she has to be speaking to this meat head the smaller one seems like they would have been easier to speak to. Kai stands in front of him, pondering how to speak to him about leaving the panicked class.

”Hmm… I, me, the person before you known as Kai Kasumiōji, want to go outside! To go outside means to leave the interior of a building, which is our current location. A location is the place where we are at presently. There is data out there that is not being recorded! and-”

She just said a lot of words that she will have to define for the muscle head, she no longer has time to pander to his muscle bound brain, valuable data will be lost!

”Move now you sweaty Troglodyte! I’m going to collect important data!”

She shoves past him and begins marching towards the exit, still taking vitals of all the students who are running out of the room that should have never been opened or vented.

”Joy! Today is turning out to be such a wonderful day!”

The sound of coughing, hacking and wheezing continues, it is the only sound that fills the rather expansive classroom within the academy. Students feel around blindly, seeking to gain their bearings, while stumbling against one another, bumping against whatever surrounded them. With the door and windows shut, with the fumes trapped inside it was as if the classroom had been transformed into a hotbox of sorts. In response to the predicament they find themselves, a situation that they now perceive as dangerous their respective spiritual pressures fluctuate and spike as though to protect themselves..a step or two too late perhaps. Still learning to properly control and harness their spiritual powers the attempt alone is more embarrassing than it is admirable.

"My my. That's quite the response I'm getting. While I understand what you all may be thinking...what would you do if you were to learn that raising and exerting your spiritual pressure will only trigger and hasten whatever it is you inhaled? Hmm..perhaps they can't hear me rig-"

”Disgust! This smells terrible! Adding a more pleasing smell to this will make people more willing to inhale and taste it! I mean, just look! Everyone is trying to run away. It smells so bad!”

While speaking the scientist turns only his head while his body still faces towards the panicked students. If there were any students who could hear his words, it served only to further the anxiety that was already clutching to them. Nyuraku blinks as he stares down at his colleague. His hand reaches out as she scribbles away her notes, a single finger extending as he pokes her shoulder the nail lightly pierces through the fabric of her lab coat. He continues to poke until the sound of the door opening draws his attention. A student stumbles out, falling before scrambling to his feet and running, his voice trailing down the hall as he screams and shouts.

“HELP! THERE’S A MONSTER IN OUR CLASS! PLEASE! HELP US!”

Kurotsuchi blinks before taking a single step away from Kai only to appear at the door.

"How uncivilized, leaving the door open while we're still working and making a fuss like that. Not to mention leaving so abruptly, tsk. Oh well, I suppose it matters not."

He firmly shuts the door. While the man's competency in shunpo is subpar, with even that perhaps being generous, moving from the door back to the stage like podium was at least a simple feat for him. Little time if any had actually passed before they were intruded upon by another interruption, this one in the form of Instructor Feng. A man once perceived as a pariah..or, at least he believed himself to be viewed in such a light, had now become a beacon of salvation to the hapless students. The man says nothing to the misplaced members of twelfth division as he ushers the students out of the compromised room into safety. Their coughing, weeping and voices could be heard as they scattered, as though herded out like cattle. Instructor Kajiyashiki is shortly behind his colleague, and not unlike his fellow instructor he says nothing to the scientists, opting to rush to the window, opening it to further air the room out, much to the aggravation of Kai.

1648528034097.png

As Kai complains about the potential loss of data, Nyuraku simply stares from one instructor to the other, eyes moving separate of one another, each one gazing at something else entirely. Unlike his peer he seems to have nothing to say, his bugeyes shifting from the imbeciles while seemingly staring at the wall. Zhou Feng who is familiar with a number of toxins, poisons and drugs holds his breath in the presence of these fumes, foreign to him while Asahi Kajiyashiki, a dabbler in drugs and concoctions in his own right uses his scarf to cover his nose and mouth. Both doing their best to not inhale the smoke like fumes, yet curiously neither one of them seems to pause and consider if inhaling the pink fumes was the only means of intaking whatever lingered in the air. It becomes certain why the students recklessly exerted their spiritual pressure when panicked rather pausing to assess the situation, when their Instructors also recklessly rush into the unknown, considering a single variable over many others. Luckily, Kurotsuchi was here to help strengthen the starved and dwindling braincells of those who were meant to become the soldiers of the Gotei 13.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

As Kai busies herself, not only seeking passage past the somber oaf but taking the time to be considerate enough in an attempt to explain the meaning behind her words a blood curdling scream rings loudly down the hall and along the campus grounds. It wasn't every day that the two conversed with their more primitive shinigami counterparts, and it seemed such a rare opportunity would have to be enjoyed later on.

"W-wha...just what the hell is going on?! What the hell is that?!"

There was the sound of loud and pained lurching, students steadying themselves against the wall while vomiting their stomachs out, others stumbling backwards, shaking and shuddering in both shock and fear. There was the sound of squelching along with other strange noises that filled the air. Scraps of torn shihakusho lay sprawled along the ground, a strange and heavy spiritual pressure bombarded the walls of the academy.

1648532041534.png

There, towering over many of the terrified students, was a heap of flesh. The flesh writhed and pulsed, hands and arms gripping, squeezing and clawing at itself, a strange clear fluid exuded from what could only assumed to be the pores and ducts from the collected body of flesh. This...creature, this thing was akin to a massive tumor, a clump of mutated flesh. While there appeared no mouth for which it could speak or communicate a seasoned and mastered sensor would be able to discern that the heavy reiatsu being continuously exerted from this monstrosity, was actually a collection of multiple spiritual pressures combined into one, like some patchworked blanket.

"HOW WONDERFUL! WE HAVE TAKEN A STEP INTO THE RIGHT PATH! THE SUBJECTS HAVE NOT IMMEDIATELY DETIORATED OR EXPLODED!!"

Still inside the classroom, Nyuraku speaks as though he is outside among the other students witness exactly what they are observing. Nyu spoke of immortality, and thus used the Hojiku-Zai (補肉剤, Flesh-mending Drug; Viz "Flesh-Healing Medicine" as a basis for the current experiment. Tampering with the contents and makeup of the drug and amplifying the potency of its regenerative and restoration capabilities. More often than not this resulted in the subject's body expanding to grotesque proportions before exploding, spraying flesh, organs and fluids everywhere...always quite the mess. The body repeatedly replicating cells, many that were unnecessary. Returning to the drawing board he once again tampered with the coding and composition. The results this time seemed to cause the affected bodies to not only replicate cells, but recognize the affected cells as part of a whole, causing the flesh to meld and pull to one another as though each individual body was actually a separate body part and they were meant to be joined together.

Despite how frightening it looked, the mesh of students would or...rather should relatively no pain if any..physically at least. Psychologically who could say, perhaps they were feeling what Gillian felt, a collection of consciousnesses inside a single collective body. The Kurotsuchi grabs a handful of items from his wagon and hops off the stage, trotting off towards the door, eager to go collect tissue samples and gain further readings.

"Hmm, maybe I should have diluted it a few more times. Something to consider for next time. Oh! I should also record the brain activity, a collection of forcefully melded minds, thoughts warring and bouncing off one another, would a new consciousness be born from this? What would happen if they were kept in such a state? Would it adapt, morph and evolve into a new being, a new soul separate yet similar to those making up its body?!"

He speaks to no one in particular as he goes onto his tangent, seemingly disregarding both Asahi and Zhou, paying neither any true mind as he rushes towards his currently immobile experiment. While immortality was still far off, more data would guide them closer to that goal, if not to something similar. Granted he didn't need anything of the sort for himself, but how could he disregard the prospect of simply proving that he could do it? Like Kai, he also thought that if he did one day succeed, he could have someone that could endlessly help him in achieving more, participating in his studies and experiments fearlessly as they knew no true permanent harm could befall them. A shame such a thing was necessary to pull out the greatness not only in others, but in society as a whole.

Truly, a great deal of talent is lost to the world...for want of a little courage.

The door was forced open and both instructors quickly acted. Despite how it may have appeared to anyone and everyone, there was an issue that needed to be contended with. Not one, but two individuals were on the grounds.Without permission was one thing, but here they were performing an unauthorized experiment. How did Zhou know this? How would something like members from another division coming to the school to perform an experiment escape someone that did nothing but bury his life in his work? There was no such thing as a social life for the one that spent time honing and training his mind and body consistently; one that made himself that much better for his students. With their safety in mind, halting the training session didn’t even come as a second thought. The two acted swiftly, Asahi’s spell and Zhou assistance helped the students hurry out of the classroom in order to prevent any sort of damage – or at least they thought. Zhou was taken back by the quirky female who made their presence known quite vocally. She went as far as stopping in front of Zhou and proceeded to demand to move – as if she was supposed to be there in the first place. With the student not speaking about a female when addressing the problem at hand, the only concern was for the creepy figure that was still inside of the classroom. Zhou didn’t think retaining her there would have been worth the fight nor the measure. Even with him about to let her pass by during her explanation, there was something that had grabbed his attention even more so than questioning the two troublemakers.

"W-wha...just what the hell is going on?! What the hell is that?!"

Students pressed against the walls attempting to gather their bearings. It was like the very earth underneath them moved and swayed as their guts were being yanked from themselves only to spill from their mouths. Quivering and shaking from the fearsome ordeal, sounds that could not be described with even a soul’s tongue began to echo about the halls. If this wasn’t enough, the dense spiritual pressure began radiating outwards. This was a problem. Before Zhou knew it, he was already standing right in front of the ungodly being that one would not have guessed was previously a student. With Zhou’s ability to analyze spiritual pressure, he was able to realize that…that thing… was not a single entity. Instead, it was a combination of multiple pressures ringing out in one body.

In truth, this was astonishing. Zhou didn’t seem all that surprised with his facial features alone, but on the inside, he began to wonder more about the mysterious, bug eyed beast of a soul. How was he able to do this by a mere concoction that was inhaled? That in itself was something that should have been improbable to the utmost of a degree. Yet, for some reason, this male had waltzed into the school and did something that could have caused a death for a student. This thought originated from the,

“HOW WONDERFUL! WE HAVE TAKEN A STEP INTO THE RIGHT PATH! THE SUBJECTS HAVE NOT IMMEDIATELY ‘DETERIORATED’ OR EXPLODED!!"

Zhou wasn’t a doctor by any means; he didn’t know what was going on. Although he had ideas of what had happened, his tampering at this given time could have caused death. Regardless, it wasn’t time to debate on what should or what should not be done. Doing something could have caused death, but doing nothing could have done the exact same thing.

With his Shikai already active, Zhou began analyzing the information before him at a godly rate. It was as if his body was literally mutating right in front of their very eyes. If Zhou’s body moved fast, his mind moved even faster. He began to think about every scenario that could possibly play out. The main question was, “What had to be stopped?” The fact of the matter was, Zhou genuinely didn’t know, and right now, anything was better than absolutely nothing. Zhou needed to stall for time. Without saying a word, Zhou swiftly came to his conclusion. The taller figure shot forward, pressing the “lock” of his blade against the contorted tumor’s skin. With his connection, the entirety of the body was forced to stop moving, growing, and simply was in a state of absolute rest.

Zhou remained silent for a moment, as there seemed to be nothing visually different about the convoluted flesh, other than it no longer grew, it no longer moved, and the powerful spiritual pressure seemed to be kept under some sort of wraps, not as wild as it had been before. Regardless of this, Zhou’s Zanpakutō was still pressed firmly against the individual.

The male, who bore nothing but a stoic demeanor soon turned his head towards the pug eyed figure before swiftly and objectively issuing a command.

“Tell me what’s going on and how to fix this, now.”

Seemingly for the first time, there was a sense of urgency in Zhou’s voice, with an underlying layer of irritation. Everyone witnessing the feat more than likely would have immediately wondered what was going on. This was especially due to the fact that this mountain of meat had literally stopped moving as soon as Zhou placed his weapon against the being. It was like the entire body was put on pause. The figure still had breath and seemingly wasn’t dead, but at the same time, it was likely that the scientist(s) would have wondered exactly what Zhou did – especially since he had affected what was going on while the two of them attempted to analyze the fruit of their experience.

Despite everything else, Zhou had made an effort to stall time, giving not only a chance for him to think of another solution, but Asahi as well.

As the Clown watched a majority of the airborne substance leave the room, he thought to himself the order in which he'd want to handle the situation. Normally, venting an unknown substance could pose a threat of its own, but so could leaving it stationary. Was it flammable? Had it been creeping its way through the cracks and vents of every opening in this room? How many people were already exposed who did not remain in the room? These were all things to consider. It wasn't something so black and white. In his mind, clearing out the room allowed for the mass to occupy an open space rather than be contained in a space that was not constructed to hold such substances. This was not some high-tech lab that locked out all internal and external contaminants. This was in fact a classroom, constructed primarily of wood. By no means was this going to remain within just the room alone.

Asahi made no attempt to pay too close attention to the individuals in the room, for his priority was controlling the situation. Any direct confrontation with those in question would likely be dealt with by Zhou. He withdrew his Denreishinki from his pocket and brought its screen to life, urgently opening the contact list for all those listed within the Third Division and sent out a text-based message.

Emergency Notice to All Staff:

An unknown substance has been released on Academy grounds. The threat it brings and the number of individuals affected by it are also unknown. I am requesting that all students and faculty remain on campus and take quarantine precautions. I will be alerting the Fourth Division to send help with examining and providing aid. No one is to leave the area until this is resolved. Any staff not occupied with directing students to safety should be making sure the premises are properly secured.

With a press of a button it sent a chorus of scattered pings and beeps across the campus as the instructor's and security staff's many devices gained the notification. They took to life and went about the grounds escorting groups of students to designated areas for isolation, as well as locking down the courtyard from entry or exit. A few of the faculty remained near it as a means to allow entry for any external that becomes available. There were procedures in place for many hazardous scenarios, though certainly a mass quarantine was not the most common of them. It wasn't likely necessary to go to such a length but it was better to be safe than sorry. Asahi had faith in his coworkers to handle any situations that were further beyond his reach, but there was still work that had to be done. He planned to further lock down the area while contacting the Fourth. He made his way outward towards the hall once more. On his way out he spoke once to his teammate.

"I'm going to secure the area. Don't die."

The male's words carried a more serious tone than what was typical but still he smiled beneath the confines of his scarf towards his associate. After making his way out to the hallway, he closed off the door behind him. Rather than opting for a text based message as he did prior, he instead called directly to the Fourth's line, relaying his message to be sent along.

"I'm Fifth Seat Asahi Kajiyashiki of the Third Division. There is a situation down at the Academy. A smoke-like substance has been released by two members of the Twelfth Division within one of our classrooms. It has promptly me to order a full quarantine of the building. I'd like to request immediate aid from the Fourth. I'm unaware of how many have been exposed to it in entirety. I can only confidently confirm the pair from the Twelfth, the students in the classroom, myself, and one other Third Officer, Zhou Feng. A student had made their way out to myself and Zhou to alert us of the situation and their whereabouts are unknown presently. I must focus on aiding in the lock down. Please pass along this request with urgency."

Asahi's entire call was coupled with him erecting barriers at each end of the hallway, preventing passing from either side. Those that were exposed already and still lingering in the halls now found themselves locked within these bounds. While those elsewhere could not find entry to this space. It was likely that more than whom he sealed within this section had been exposed, in fact he was almost certain of it. The panicked fleeing some of those within the classroom had made and the visit Zhou and himself had from a particularly dramatic student were surely prime examples of this. There was not even any insight into how many could have gotten about before the pair's arrival. The key now was to prevent any more contaminated individuals from freely roaming among the institution. The joint effort among the faculty to lock down the situation would certainly aid in containing the matter but given the escalating spiritual presence coming from the room that Asahi had left, exposure may be only half the problem.

“I think we have more pressing matters than a rematch, don’t you think? Your friend is dead, aren’t you a little worried about the state of the Gotei?”

“Worried? About the Gotei? No, if history has taught us anything is that the Gotei has always survived and thrived. Two of the traitor captains have died and one remains in prison to this day. Though losing a captain and a lieutenant in such a short period of time is worrisome… Even more so when it was someone, I knew well…

Oyama’s tone was eerily calm about the whole situation at large. A captain and now a lieutenant dead, it seems like the higher-ranking officers were being picked off, yet she felt the two deaths were unrelated, if only due to dimensions they had died in.

“There isn’t much we can do other than train ourselves for what might come.”

Her head lowered a bit as her fist clenched tightly.

“I’ll be headed off to the games… I want a better look than just our phones or the near by TVs. I want to know who Rukongai man is that is holding his own against two captains.”

This was a partial truth, as she did want to see the head of the Kido division at work, along with captain Mukuro’s speed and maneuverability in a true battle. Another part of her was to see her sister, and brother-in-law, it’s been so long since she saw them, that she felt it was a needed distraction, it was the reason why she wanted to continue the fight, a distraction from her thoughts Furia’s thoughts and some of her duty.

She didn’t wait for a response as she shunpo out of the area, moving along the hall ways as fast as she could before making her way towards the Inner court guard’s head quarters. Pushing passed the door, to be greeted by several members once more. She quickly informed them of her destination and to have anything reported to her discreetly as possible, but before she could go she was handed a report of 12th division’s Nyuraku, and Kai had moved to 3rd division, reports of a chemical hazard has been released within the barracks.

“Double the personal nearest third division and insure nothing gets in, and if something does get in, deal with it, if you can’t inform Ochitsuki.”

She had disappeared once more, moving herself out of the division and towards the Rukongai.
