It was a beautiful day today Yosuke thought to himself. The 4th Seated Member of the Sixth Division was seen walking around the barracks. Tucked underneath his arm he carried an ornate black box with golden cherry blossoms engraved into the wood. Golden latches secured the box shut as he walked through the corridors. Yosuke walked past most members of the Sixth Division without stopping to talk to them. Upon reaching the entrance of the barracks, Yosuke suddenly jumped skyward. Gracefully he flipped and twisted through the air with ease like a professional gymnast, before landing securely on his feet atop the Roof, (野屋根 noyane).
It was here that he sat down cross-legged and let out a content sigh.
"Ahhhh, what a beautiful day it is today. I wonder what everyone in the other divisions are up to and everyone else. Ahhhh my own fault for being so carefree."
Yosuke let out a soft chuckle before unclasping the box. The ornate lid being lifted off of it and set to the side. Inside sat a finely constructed Biwa. It was Yosukes favorite activity to play his Biwa while relaxing under the sky. He sat there and began to play one of his favorite songs.
Ochihabune. As he sat playing the music flew through his very soul. Yosuke's eyes closed years of playing the Biwa had lead to his memorization of every spot his fingers needed to be placed, every note, every break, every rhythmic change all had been committed to his memory as he played through the song with perfect timing and articulacy.
Most of the work that typically needed to be done around the Barracks had been done. Each room had been inspected with a fine toothcomb by Yosuke, free of dust, and everything orderly. Yosuke wasn't too hard on people tho he allowed them to have personal effects and things to do in their off time. Whether they had musical instruments, painting supplies, gameboards, etc. Yosuke didn't mind he felt that people should find ways to express themselves and branch out into a different life than the usual constant serious life of being a shinigami. It was days like today where one could truly enjoy having some time to themselves and enjoy doing whatever it is they enjoyed doing.
That's why after their mid-day meal, or lunch, Yosuke told everyone that he was in charge of at that time that they were free to do as they please the rest of the day. Normally people respected his word as a 4th seated officer but he couldn't very well send everyone home as there were still those who outranked him. However, none of those people were present today and as such all orders fell upon his shoulders. He wanted to let the men and women of the Sixth Division have a day of rest and relaxation. Being the Division in charge of judiciary entitles and upholding/enforcing the law. Much was expected of the Sixth Division in manners concerning Seireitei and Soul Society Law.
However, Today seemed to be a rather peaceful one. Yosuke was determined to enjoy it as best he could. He casually waved as some of the Sixth Division members spotted him atop the roof of the Barracks. They had all grown accustomed to seeing him there playing his Biwa when he was off. He didn't know what these young and new Division members were up to or who they were on a personal level but he hoped they would go on and enjoy their day same as him.
As he played his mind drifted to other thoughts. He knew his father was testing for the rank of captain today. Details were not shared with Yosuke when he asked his father about them. He decided it was for the best anyway. The less he knew the less he would have to think about. He quickly realized he started to get a little gloomy or worried for his father? No most certainly not. Yosuke had seen his father in action many times and knew what the man was capable of in dire situations. He had seen his father overcome impossible obstacles several times in the past and he was sure this would be no different. He smiled to himself as he played the final note in his song. Setting his biwa down he pulled out his lunch from a cloth knapsack he had attached to his waist.
Inside the knapsack was a delicious lunch of Onigiriand Green herbal Tea. Yosuke looked at his food with delight as his mouth began to water.
"Man oh man I truly do love relaxing days like this!" He quickly began to eat his lunch chowing down on the delicious food. After a few massive bites, he had already eaten three Onigiri and took two large refreshing gulps of his tea. Letting out a large and content sigh as he leaned back against the slanted tiled roof. Resting his head back as he stared up at the clouds. He continued to munch at his lunch, his pace a little slower now to enjoy his food and not get sick from eating it too fast. Yosuke watched as the clouds soared overhead. Peaceful and gracefully whisping away with the wind to untold destinations.
He watched and waved as more and more division members left the barracks. He smiled at them watching each pair off and go down the man different corridors that dotted the Seireitei. His smiled briefly faded at a moment. Yosuke realized they were all friends. Everyone in his squad he considered his friend in truth, but Yosuke was always alone. He never really spent his time with anyone aside from those two. From his days back at the academy, Yosuke never really had anyone he could spend time with daily, and spend his free time with. It was a bitter cold he felt in his spine. He regretted not trying to offer to spend time with some of the other Shinigami in his squad. Yosuke knew however such actions were frowned upon in the Kuchiki clan. Befriending and becoming acquaintances with beings lesser than themselves was something the Kuchiki did not look appealing at. If your status was not equal, nearly equal, or if you did not further the Kuchiki clans name very few would look at you much less speak to you.
Yosuke was different. He was incredibly friendly and was able to weasel his way into becoming personal with his fellow division members by saying that making them feel like he cared about them personally would make them fight more diligently for him. Though this was true, Yosuke didn't like lying to the Kuchiki family. Yosuke truly wanted more than anything was for his division members to accept him as their friend despite his status. He knew many were friendly out of fear. Fear of his clan and the status of power and dignity that it represented. It was this fear that ultimately made Yosuke feel alienated from most of the Shinigami he worked with and most of the Shinigami within all of the Seireitei for that matter.
Yosuke quickly realized he was beeing to depressing again and shook his head.
"Alright enough of that! Time to relax not get depressed" With that his tone changed and he was back to his usual friendly self. His openness and warmth was simply a facade, a coverup masking the loneliness he felt within the depths of his soul. He picked his Biwa pack up and began to play another song.
Samidare, the first song he ever learned to play on his Biwa. It was a beautiful piece of music. He loved listening to it just as much as he loved to play it. Each note resonated with his very being and his current state of mind as he played. The notes filling the air as he Yosuke watched the clouds still drifting on, disappearing over the Horizon....
