Notable Features:
Akarui Gekkō is short in stature, standing at a mere 4'11", and is known as the "ant among mountains". She is usually seen with a permanent scowl on her face; rumor has it no one has ever seen the little scorpion with a smile since she stepped foot into the Shino'o Academy. Along her jaw lies a scar, left as a reminder of her past. Not one to wear the traditional Shihakushō (lit. "死覇装," Garment of Dead Souls”), Rui dons a modified uniform made to adhere to her speed and battle sense. She dons a black top-coat that cuts at her bicep, bearing her clan insignia stitched onto the back of her custom coat. If she had a favorite color, it'd be red, as it is a part of her makeup and polish. Unlike most of her peers, Rui's hair possesses two tones, beginning with a steel grayish-blue and fades into a pale silver sheen that clashes against her dark skin, reaching down past her heels at this point. However, the most enticing of all is her emerald orbs, never failing to strike fear into whoever they lie upon.

"It's like she's a ticking time bomb. No one knows when she's going to blow." -- Member of the First Division

Personality:
Akarui Gekkō is a prideful, short-tempered, aggressive person, but she didn't start this way. Problematic situations have turned the former empathetic healer into what seems like a heartless monster for those not familiar with her upbringing and hardships. After being accepted into the First Division and experiencing the means of ranking and power, Akarui has gradually changed into a strict person, a stickler for the rules, and submissive to those of a higher power, such as her Captain Commander and Head Lieutenant. While often portrayed negatively by the passing shinigami, Akarui's fierce character and competitive drive have actually granted her an important promotion as the First Division's sixth seat, and then eventually becoming their renowned Third Seat over the course of one hundred years.

Often determined to keep herself prim and proper in the line of duty, Akarui finds herself miserable in most cases considering her title as just an over-glorified guard. However, she is more than elated when at the chance to assert her dominance in a justified setting, Akarui offers a rare grin. She is incredibly focused on achieving authentic victories and has learned never to underestimate her opponent in her seven centuries of service. Akarui is not only very athletic and talented at combat, but also very intelligent and extremely perceptive, capable of strategic planning and quick improvising. While a rather volatile shinigami, Akarui is smart enough to discern who would and wouldn't give her a headache. She isn't particularly nice or open with people within her division or any others, often finding ways to avoid them if possible. Akarui would prefer to keep to herself, but because of her explosive attitude due to her complete abhorrence of others, shinigami often react negatively to her, although they have eventually learned to stray away from coming close to the unpredictable bomb.

Relatedly, she detests being pitied or looked down on by others, and will hold contempt towards those that don't take her seriously, while recognizing the effort of those that manage to put up a challenge against her. Akarui is immensely prideful and prefers to act alone, as she hates the idea of being protected or having to rely on other people to assist her unless, in the latter's case, she is recognized as the unquestionable leading figure within a unit. Akarui is a relentless perfectionist, and will only become satisfied with indisputable victories. Having difficulty accepting her mistakes and shortcomings, she will fiercely deny them whenever they are pointed out by others, regardless of who they are. That doesn't mean, however, that Akarui doesn't listen to advice, having come to realize her faults and how to somewhat improve on them, but because of her quiet pride, Akarui never outright admits it.

In the past, Akarui had a more vulnerable side, having been led to tears due to the physical and emotional abuse from her older siblings and clan mother. During her time in Fourth, Akarui had a single moment of weakness after the events of the Shattered Dimensions. After the loss of her captain and lieutenant, Akarui had cried to the heavens, feeling helpless and weakened that she was unable to do anything regarding their loss, and the many shinigami that came after them. The arrival and take over of Shobatsu Murasaki had rekindled the flame that resided inside of Akarui, and has led to what she is today. While her coldness is reluctant to give, she keeps the softest part of her for her mother to keep. Now and then her husband and son get her kinder side more often than others.

Relatives:

Yūutsuna Gekkō -- Father (Deceased) | Sakuya Megami -- Mother (Living)

Higen Kagayaki -- Spouse (Living) | Haruki Kagayaki -- Son (Living)
Born as a bastard of the Gekkō Clan, Akarui and her mother were treated less than kindly by the members of the main branch, including her seven elder siblings. She holds no emotional attachment to those residing in the clan other than her mother, Sakuya Megami. Bearing the title of Clan Head and being a part of the First Division is the best that she can do to ensure her mother's safety as Akarui performs her duties to protect the Soul Society and its people. Somewhere over the course of a century, the Commander had managed to gain the confidence to seek out the little Scorpion and court her to the point where the two eventually wed and had a son.

Reiryoku Level: Immense Spiritual Power
799414c4ea86764881da72e563ddd41b.png

In possession of such a large amount of spiritual pressure within a tiny frame, it would prove to hinder others, but not Akarui. Born with an innate ability of fine control and a large container capable of holding such an amount, Akarui was far ahead of her older siblings at a young age. For safety matters, Akarui bears clothing made to act as a repressor to her spiritual power should an incident happen and her release of concentrated energy harms those within the firing range if they are unable to protect themselves accordingly. Released every so often when she's in the mood to avoid people the best way she can, her near limitless supply of reiryoku has yet to be dented since stepping foot into the arms of the First Division. Lacking the proper outlet for her aggressive nature, Akarui has turned her attention to her surroundings, taking down trees, walls, and the likeness. Performing kidō without their respective incantations is of ease after the teachings of former Head Lieutenant Oki and Former Captain Camila Kuchiki.

Sensing Reiryoku: Expert
b3556b5ae64ef256f19a510e695c2359.png
"Did you think that you could escape from me?"

Akarui's expertise in sensing is diligently used in combat and things as simple as rounds overlooking the home in which she protects. By no means does she perform as dutifully as her Commander and head Lieutenant when it comes to her innate ability, but that doesn't mean that her prowess is completely useless. Teetering on the edge of mastering the concept, Akarui can pinpoint and differentiate distinct properties and makes between individuals to distinguish friend and foe. To keep damage control under wraps out of respect of the former Head Lieutenant, Akarui has made prominent advancements and developments to not only help herself but her peers if necessary. There is little capable of fully hiding their spiritual pressure, but even then, it is not enough to hide from Akarui. Not close to reaching the title of a master, Akarui has shown that she does more than well in her current state, but improvement is never off of the table.

Reiryoku Control: Mastered Control
a7a9583fd8c118ceba964fc268904bee.png

Control is a must. Possessing an immense amount of spiritual energy is dangerous, and no way to control is lethal to both the host and those around them. In Akarui's situation, the output of her reiryoku during her casual outings is proof enough that she can mind her power well. Nearly having her reiatsu actively present the moment a presence comes within twenty feet of her, she fends off potential conversationalists unless she is familiar with them, such as the Divine Messengers directly beneath Commander, the Head Lieutenant, or in the rarest occurrences, Commander Kagayaki himself. Gauging her reactions to incoming personnel, Akarui effectively shrouds her body in its bubble, warding off those that dare to approach her. The closest in which an offender has gotten was just reaching four-and-a-half feet before they caved and were sent into shock from the pain that wracked their body.

Reiatsu: Master

Mastered control comes mastered reiatsu. Deserving of her position as the Sixth Seat of the First Division, Akarui is simply a step from standing amongst the strongest of the Gotei Thirteen, and soon, she gains her foothold among those as she now sits at the rank of Third.

Living within seven other children whose presence overpowered hers in importance, Rui made herself known one way or another. In skill or power, the Scorpion struck intending to kill. In some cases, she might have succeeded if not called off. However, when it came to the physical construct of her innate energy, even her instructors couldn't bear to stand close for more than a few minutes. Gaining no help, even before the lack of attention, Akarui had taken it upon herself to join Shino'o Academy long before the time that was scheduled for all the other children. Standing at the entrance exam was a fourteen-year-old Akarui, waiting for her turn.

Upon the release of her reiatsu, her admittance to the Academy was sealed, and she became a part of Class One due to her excelled aptitude in zanjutsu and speed. However, due to the secretive influence of the Gekkō, Akarui's graduation came earlier than expected by six years at the age of forty-four. Unneeded help left a sour taste in Akarui's mouth since she had yet to choose a proper division that would aid her in her areas of expertise and those that she lacked in. While the Twelfth Division piqued her interest, their version of research, development, and being confined in an enclosed space for hours on end wasn't her forte. Instead, this is where she began her plans heading into the Fourth Division where she learned far more than she could have on her own.

Chemistry, medicine, and anatomy lessons and books were only a part of what she had access to. It was here that the comprehension of her reiatsu and its capabilities skyrocketed in the open spaces where she could test her range and potency without worrying about harming herself or others as healers were always on standby. Powerful fits of rage due to frustration have caused Rui's reiatsu to be trigger more powerfully by anger rather than a calm state of mind. Though after several years of continuous practice, the Scorpion had managed to grasp a level of control unseen by those her age, and she was relatively young by the time she had reached the third seat at 108. After the Shattered Dimensions Event, Akarui had been within the Fourth Division for three centuries before she left and transferred to the First Division where she's stayed since.

The route to power and strength was tedious and spirit-breaking to the weak-minded individuals, but Akarui was far from them. She'd been through hell in training every aspect of skill that she could, and she wouldn't stop until she was satisfied. Far from it, Akarui had continued until she finally gained a foot into new territory, standing amongst monsters and beasts in her new position as the Third Seat of the First Division. The mastery of her reiryoku control and reiatsu is revealed in her daily life, showing restraint and as much patience as the hot-headed shinigami can spare.

Reiatsu Colors: Black and Emerald Green

Reiatsu Effect(s): Caustic
Unless completely necessary or by the command of Shobatsu, Akarui will not completely expel her full expense at the risk of completely decimating the surrounding area, people, and structures alike. Unlike the explosive nature that she exudes when provoked, her release of reiatsu can come in many forms. In a controlled setting, her physical release looks hauntingly light and airy, something similar to billowing clouds sprouting from her feet that rise to encase her body and spread across the area; however, as a form of intimidation, Rui's reiatsu can explode from her like a pillar of emerald green light, reaching for the skies in seconds. Loose rubble and broken tiles can rise from the ground at her release.

In the only severe case of Akarui's anger, the destruction left a section of the First Division training grounds obliterated into a steaming cesspool of melted stone, and Akarui was left in the middle. Out of sheer luck, there was no shinigami within the grounds at the time, for they too would have succumbed to the might of the Scorpion. Otherwise, never having to fully expel her spiritual energy at 100% against foes, Akarui has never gotten serious enough to cause lethal injuries to individuals within the surrounding area. In a controlled setting, Akarui means no harm other than to establish her dominance and the difference against those that dare to go against her. The sense of being caught in her reiatsu feels unbearable to shinigami, as if they may just succumb to this burning sensation crawling beneath their skin unless they leave her immediate range. As exposure lengthens, however, nothing is stopping them from falling to her acidic energy.

Zanjutsu Level: Master Swordsman

Being so much smaller than everyone else since childhood, Akarui capitalizes on her difference in size compared to others to effectively counter and outmaneuver her opponents. Honed until the palms of her hands blistered and bled from swinging the first wooden sword she had ever picked up, Rui was merciless against her elder siblings, even going so far as to fracture their bones during spars. What was mistaken for strength was something as simple as speed and skill gained from observing their instructors. While the other children were motivated by the title of shinigami or clan head, Rui was simply motivated by the fact she wanted acknowledgment by her father. Having always been looked at so coldly, a normal child would have shied away from the chance at improving their lives to simply sit quietly and live in recluse.

The teachers favored her among the children, and it brought her a step closer to her father. Swift strikes, powerful swings, speedy submissions, Rui was blessed with the chance to speak to her father after five years since she had begun her training. Happiness shortlived, Rui was suddenly stripped of half of the necessities given to other children, and that had caused a gap between them to begin and widen over time, and the additional near-death experience had sealed the fates between Akarui against the Gekkō Clan. For a clan obsessed with status, a prodigious child being tossed to the side as if they were trash had become their biggest mistake to this day. Upon stepping foot into Shino'o Academy, Rui was met with many others that had skills far more advanced than she did in her current stage and those that didn't. Unsatisfied with her current standing, she did more than anyone could have expected her to. With the heaviness of a traditional katana, Akarui had found something much more suited to her, stepping into western-styled weapons and found her current blade.

Speed, precision, and misdirection were among the top priorities when it came to zanjutsu, and to use them soundly against any opponent that stepped against her was the neverending goal. While she holds no proper stance that is either western or eastern oriented, the movement of the blade has come to be one of the most disorienting sights to onlookers. The speed produced by Rui made it seem as if the thin blade managed to move in waves to conform to the violent thrusts and slashes as if space is bending. These wild-looking slashes and feints were what put her opposers on edge along with the warrant to avoid the poison-coated metal from touching their person. Unable to gauge or predict Rui's movements proved her victorious in the end. Upon graduation, Rui had earned the title of "Scorpion" from her peers and stepped forward into a new setting. The haunting ferocity of the venomous Scorpion begins to pave her own path of power.

Having mastery in the arts of swordsmanship is something that is mostly seen within the likes of the Eleventh Division other than brutality and disorderly conduct. She is a highly adaptable combatant, that adaptability allowing the Scorpion to become ambidextrous, letting her switch her blade between hands with ease. Akarui usually swings with more enthusiasm in her right hand than her left. However, she can easily switch or balance the strength between her two hands, allowing her to surprise her opponent if they managed to catch on before the killing blow that is. Not one to toss around the use of her Shikai so often, Akarui is proficient in the use of her sealed zanpakuto so well that the need for her Shikai is only used in the direst of situations. The use of projectiles is just as familiar, hiding hundreds of needles on her person.

While she may not strike hard, Akarui strikes fast. Being as small as she is, speed is positive reinforcement. Crossing vast distances is effortless, moving without a sound or breaking a sweat. Akarui knows that she is no cannon fodder because she has mastered this ability to the point where she can appear to be in several places at once and wipe out an entire squadron in seconds.

At the beginning of her path as a shinigami, Akarui always lacked strength, and because of that, she was targeted by her older classmates and siblings. While most would think fleeing is the coward's way out, to Rui, it had only meant that she would be able to fight another day. Close-quarters combat was something unsuited to the short girl at the risk of being caught in the beginning, but she honed her evasion skills until one day, she just couldn't be followed any longer. Forcing herself to be able to move effortlessly in the case of rendered weaponless, Rui has become adamant in perfecting another of the four main shinigami arts.

Evasion and dodging are only the beginning of Rui's weaponless advancements. Observing her opponents' movements while simultaneously avoid them allows for the crafty shinigami to devise tactical responses best suited for her against those she faces. When it comes to offensive procedures, with or without weapons, she's made it a point to finish as quickly as possible if her attack patterns become recognized. Yet due to her formless posture, Rui's unpredictability in positioning herself around the opponent grants her another reinforcement that can speedily become their destruction. Using the familiarity of her surroundings allow Rui to perform at an even faster speed, using the setting to propel herself faster. Gaining the higher ground against her opponents widens the gap between their victory and her own.

As she gains the most of her strength within her lower body, propelling herself forward to crash against her opponents at high speeds baffles them. Such a brutish way of contact, but the most efficient at closing distances, Rui has no problems dropping the proper persona she holds herself as. Soundless steps and back-breaking impact from Rui's fierce and built-up momentum will send even the largest offender flying a few feet. Ambushing her guard unit when they slack off is one of Rui's biggest uses of her speedy movements, often flying the soles of her feet into their faces without a second thought. Light on her feet, Rui strolls soundlessly during her patrols. The times in which Rui happens to be silently observing, it almost seems as if she never existed.

Known Techniques: Utsusemi, Senka, Speed Clones

Hakuda Level: Combatant
c9f118d0ec48295484383bc9ebd8986e.png

Having such small stature, Akarui isn't best suited strength-wise. However, to make up for the lack of strength, combining the skills of hohō and her poison specialty create a deadly combination to fight against. Closing large distances is of little effort to Rui, so in terms of close-quarters combat, Rui becomes a fierce force that can drive opponents of many sizes to their knees. Administering her poison in various ways such as projectiles, through scratches or clawing, or even through smears of cosmetics can render her opponents useless from something as simple as a nick if they possess no immunity against such highly potent chemicals.

Upon graduation from Shino'o Academy, Rui found herself drawn to the Fourth Division. Quickly rising the ranks and becoming this division's third seat, her knowledge of anatomy regarding the bodies of shinigami began when it came to restraining those against healing. Under the watchful eye of Captain Camila Kuchiki, who was unparalleled in medicine and chemistry among the entirety of the Gotei, Akarui developed a sound relationship with her captain when it came to toxins, poisons, their properties, and the distribution of them. Gaining knowledge of the body's nerves and muscles was just as enticing to study as it would aid Rui in her profound endeavors to come. Striking with the knuckles or with clean needles would still the patients from fussing or moving around recklessly. While professionalism is necessary, Rui can't help behave in an unpleasant display when her hand is pushed.

Lieutenant Hikoto Shihōin had been her last instructor since graduating from the Academy. A medical expert as well as hakuda master, Akarui had made it so the development between her and the lieutenant was just as level with their captain. Often finding herself as the lieutenant's sparring partner, Akarui was forced to evade more often than not due to the ferocity she was met with daily. Speed was drilled into her head, proper defensive techniques in the cases of being caught by a larger opponent. Possibly being grabbed by opponents opened up new worlds and ways for taking them down. Nothing was off the table, and it was here that it was cemented there was nothing such as fairness in a fight. Consistently being beaten by a wooden sword against her skin had Akarui developing durability, but also a hatred for such a merciless training regiment as it was also used to discipline her when she went too far.

Using the profound knowledge gained up until the loss of her captain and lieutenant, Akarui's restlessness is evident in her thirst for battle and improvement where she lacks the most.

Kido Skill Level: Kidō Expert
00644458cda6dae1803d396b1ab9284d.png

Though she may have entered the Fourth Division on her own terms, healing was not a part of Rui's regiments. While during her Academy years, Rui's knowledge of toxins, poisons, and their uses was basic. Taking the chance of entering the Fourth Division opened new doors of medicine and chemical concoctions that Rui could produce for her own use. Climbing up the ranking ladder over the course of a year, Rui became closely acquainted with her captain and lieutenant. On their endeavors out of the barracks, Rui was usually left to oversee the others just so nothing would go wrong.

However, at any possible chance that her captain wasn't occupied with patients, she spent endless amounts of hours and sleepless nights to perfect combinations over combinations that she would be able to use in combat. Seeing the lack of size and strength of Rui may have been a slight factor in her captain's reluctance to teaching her, but the effort that Rui performed daily was enough for her to concede and bear anything that would help the tiny scorpion on her path of power.

Yet that didn't mean that Rui could forego the teachings of kidō. More than healing, there existed binding and offensive techniques. Not as adept in this line of combat, Rui began late in the game but performed and practiced without complaint out of fear that her efforts would end in vain. Like a mantra, she chanted these incantations and at the slightest instance on her concentration breaking, the effects of casting the kidō would backfire and send the girl sprawling across the courtyard. Even against her captain's wishes on getting rest, Rui would scream in frustration on wanting to continue and the hammer came down instantly, forcing her to rest. Upon awaking in an angry daze, she would find herself healed from her injuries, then perform her duties without question before returning to her private training, with or without her guide.

Stubborn she was in wanting to learn the most difficult spells, and she would come to learn, first with the incantations successfully under Captain Kuchiki, and then without the use of them under Head Lieutenant Oki. Though they may not be as powerful without the incantation, being all about speed, Rui will only chant them as necessary to the amount of impact she wishes to bestow against opponents. She is more attuned to using Bakudō over the use of Hadō spells.

Known Spells:
Bakudō
(縛道, "Way of Binding")
Seki, Geki, Tsuriboshi, Hyapporankan, Sekienton, Tenteikūra, Dankū

Hadō (破道, "Way of Destruction")
Byakurai, Shakkahō, Ōkasen, Daichi Tenyō

Skills and Abilities:
Anatomical Intellect: To find herself matched in this area of expertise is rare in this day and age, but those members of the Fourth Division should be well advised of the bodies of Shinigami, Quincy, Arrancar, and other extremities alike. Possessing the same infrastructure more or less, Akarui uses her extensive knowledge of anatomy to calculate just where and how hard she must hit to get the outcome she desires. With this skill, the use of her hakuda and projectile precision can be accentuated in the decimation of those that stand in her way. Though with every generation of individuals showing face, Akarui's studies can only lengthen as she finds her next prominent form to study against.

Poison Fanatic and Immunity: To say that Akarui is obsessed with toxic material would be the nicest way. While her reason for the learning of poisons, their properties, and how to properly use them against others may be unorthodox, no one can go against her otherwise. Under Captain Kuchiki, Akarui was given the upper hand unknowingly after her internal clan affairs subsided. Even after the disappearance and loss of her captain and lieutenant, Akarui didn't cease in her studies and persisted in finding the use of her expertise. She arms herself diligently, and in the most discreet ways to her benefits. Centuries of dealing with dangerous chemicals have given Akarui an ultimate immunity to many things considered deadly to others around her, which is secretly a reason why she won't let anyone come into close quarters with her. Release of her "cleansing" reiatsu keeps those around her safe. Unwanted casualties were hard to account for, including herself.

Infinite Adaptability: Throughout these six-hundred years that she has been on duty as a shinigami, Akarui can account for more times than she can count on her hands that there would always be something new on the rise; should that new entity become an enemy, being able to fight against it would be a must. Her exceptional intelligence has allowed her to break down the mechanisms of all opponents. Combining the skills mentioned above, this emission has accented the outstanding skills needed to devise and strategize plans that can help herself or her peers in combat. Akarui's crucial calculations have made themselves manifest as she earns her victories, escapes dangerous situations, and saves the lives of others.

Equipment:

Denreishiki X
9641b988377bc3d55fa222e15f2bf4af.png

As the times change, Akarui has to be ready at all times. Managing to grab one of the many new Denreishiki's, she uses it to keep up with the outer squads since she hardly leaves her post unless said otherwise. She often finds herself getting jealous of watching the others roam so freely that she breaks her phone on a whim out of frustration regarding her position. It isn't until later she realizes the damage and has to return to the Twelfth Division for another device. Since its introduction, Akarui has gone through six, and it has dented a bit of her pay dock.

Mahi Hari (麻痺針, "Paralyzing Needles")
c2e961c484540333538ccdd7ccc292e6.png

Needles dipped in several poisons and hidden on her person. A single, coated pin has the potency to completely send an opponent's nervous system out of proportion and lose all functions of the targeted area. Being pierced by such a tiny projectile is unnoticeable unless one is really paying attention. There are probably hundreds of these tiny projectiles carried on her person. The same substances are what make up her polish and lipstick, and due to her immunity to these agents, it affects her in no way.

Tsuki no Kenshi (月の絹糸, "Moon Silk Thread")
A family heirloom, Akarui's half-coat, is made out of this moon silk passed down from the first generation. Much like the Kuchiki with their fancy hair accessories, the coat is a sign of her nobility and position as the Clan Head. While it may have been modified to fit the style suited to Akarui, the moon silk thread is a precious, priceless artifact. Most recently, Akarui had gotten it done in a black cloth that covered her down to the top of her stomach.

Kaori no Bakudan (香りの爆弾, "Scented Bombs")
These strawberry-scented bombs were made to give a bit of sweetness to an individual's presence. These scents can last up to a full day with just a small dosage of three drops, so using a full bottle at once will have that individual smelling like that for months. While Akarui doesn't use any for herself, she keeps a few bottles within her coat in case she finds a lucky buyer, or finds another use for them.

Inventions:

Kayumi-ko (かゆみ粉, "Itching Powder")
Probably one of the most childish yet effective creations. Though she has yet to use this powder in a battle, it's often used against her guards. The discomfort of constantly scratching is annoying, however, Akarui's doses are so intense that it will have anyone affected practically clawing their skin off to get rid of the itching sensation. The powder is odorless but white in color unless it's washed in with water.

Himizu (火水, "Firewater")
The creation of this particular poison wasn't made to kill, but rather to incapacitate for a lengthy amount of time. Similar to the effects of a fever, Himizu can be injected or ingested into a person's body and set them alight from the inside. Though the effects are not instantaneous, the time it takes isn't more than a few minutes before it becomes severe. It begins at the mouth, making it feel as if they'd foregone water for months. As it trickles down the esophagus, violent coughing ensues and the thirst for some form of liquid is downed in search of relief, however, it is far too late by this point. It spreads heat throughout the chest, and then outwards to the little bones of the fingers and toes. The victim can die from dehydration or overhydration if they manage to get to a plentiful water source. Himizu is odorless but can have either a blue or red tint. The following concoction is surprisingly favorable in the liquor community and she often finds concern for those that desire more of a punch.

Yopparai (酔っぱらい, "Drunken Stupor")
The effects of Yopparai begin with the enhancements of color. They become much brighter, and then as the effects grow, the area around them begins to look distorted. This uneven distribution of vision will begin to hinder the affected person and cause their words and actions to slow and become sloppy and lethargic. Usually applied by the injections from the many needles she holds on her person or by being applied by a flash of powder. This drug has often been used to place her opponents into a stationary state similar to slumber after a prolonged amount of time.

Keshō Yake (化粧焼け, "Cosmetic Burn")
With her immunity to the poisons she concocts, Akarui has made this particular poison to be worn out in the open. Under the guise of simple red cosmetics and polish, Rui's use of this substance can be applied directly or indirectly. Not seeing herself making direct contact any time soon, a smooth kiss across the palm of her gloved hand and a slap to exposed skin will administer the toxic property almost immediately. The same type also rests in her nail varnish which she can scratch and claw away at her opponents. This type of poison attacks the nervous system and sends it spiraling out of proportion. The substance is so severe, causing the body to spasm until one succumbs to unconsciousness. This same substance is liquified and rests within her scabbard.

Zanpakuto Name: Acidic Beast (酸性獣, "Sansei-jū")
Zanpakuto Appearance:
Illustration550.png

Taking on more of a western appearance, Rui's make of her zanpakuto is something similar to an epee. The lightness and flexibility of the blade allow Akarui to perform as she was meant to be: swift, and made for a single killing strike. From the tip of the blade down to the pommel, the length extends to four feet in total, a few inches shy of matching Akarui's height. Her sheath, while possessing a simple black and gold design on the outside, is full of a liquid poison made to cause excruciating pain once it enters the bloodstream. While she possesses the antidote within a secret container in the pommel, she's reluctant to distribute it even among her peers.

Zanpakuto Spirit:
Illustration551.png

With skin dripping down from her once beautiful face, Sansei-jū is a walking horror show to anyone but her host. Broken wings, the skin of fair ivory, and aqua blue waves behind her. This spirit of Akarui's us just as impatient and rough around the edges, constantly looking to wreak havoc. However, with the threats of sealing her spirit away, she quiets down, only meaning to poke fun at the serious third seat. While informal with one another due to the long possession of over six centuries worth, both have eventually come to address each other by nicknames. Sansei-jū prefers Kansan (甘酸, "sweet acid"), and much to Akarui's chagrin, calls her host "Rui." The two have a sound bond, finding themselves in agreement more often than not. Such relationships can only be developed by those in-tuned with their spirits immediately or will have to build up to that point. While Kansan is familiar that Rui will not be of this world one day, she hopes that they can both be together once more in the next life.

Inner World:
Illustration552.png
"It looks refreshing, but this pool is far from it."

Stepping into her inner world for the first time, Akarui was more than elated to have something so bright and to contrast the chaotic destructiveness of her zanpakuto; but she was sorely mistaken. Light and airy is what this inner world looks like as it possesses a lake, glittering and shining blue, but it is far from kind. Within the waters contains hot springs, exuding deadly gases that her spirit feeds from. Always beckoned to take a dip in that pool, Akarui refuses despite knowing that she has the power to create a clean section of the lake. Out of respect for her spirit, Akarui leaves Kansan to her roam freely, and she appreciates it whole-heartedly from the aggressive woman.

Release Phrase: Melt (溶かす, "Tokasu")

f1a1728b0cef331b835dcefe42349e4c.png

Shikai:

Illustration554.png

While being so in-tune with her blade and spirit, the use for her release phrase is useless, but hearing her spirit plead for its use, Akarui can't help but oblige. At the release, It begins from the tip of the blade, dripping and melting away like ice; however, the process stops at the handle. Pressing the boiling edge of the handle into the pool, Akarui quickly yanks it out, and what comes with it is her newly formed Shikai. Long, close to six feet in length from the staff alone, is dressed in red from where the handle begins, down the new, golden ring guard at the end. From the guard, the foot-long blade sprouts, silver, curved, and gleaming along the sharp edge, made for deep incisions. At the tip, it begins to curve into a pincer shape, hooked, and ready for carving through her opponents. Back at the handle, the black wrapping extends lacing around her right arm up to her elbows.

Shikai Special Abilities:

Illustration553.png
"Unfortunate for you to have crossed my path, scum. I'll provide the kindness to give you another chance in this world."

Eki-ji (液路, "Liquid Path")
The corrosive nature of her zanpakuto allows Akarui to run her blade against or through any solid substance and turn it into a pile of acidic sludge. It breaks down many things without resistance. A single cut can begin the process of decimating entire buildings as it does not stop unless sealed or told to do so. The risk of making contact with this weapon is severe. To even touch upon her zanpakuto is suicide; it will have your flesh dripping from your bones as they become a state similar to liquid matter or burns so heavily that slabs of flesh hit the ground with a resounding and unappetizing plop. Survival is not guaranteed if the offender is unable to defend properly against Akarui's physical manifestation of her innate power that even solidified structures have the probability of becoming a pool of muck within minutes.

Illustration561.png

Hoippu-ryoku (ホイップ力, "Whipping Force")
Within the staff section of the Shikai lies segmented sections that can break formation and form into this whip-like structure. In this form, rather than just stabbing motions, Rui can perform in a wilder sense, moving with speed and grace that it almost looks as if she's dancing with her weapon twirling in tow. Waving behind her, in this form, it almost seems as if Akarui has taken the actual form of a scorpion. With her advanced skills, directing the bladed "stinger" to pierce her opponents or cut into them is of little difficulty. Using the hooked curve of her blade, Ruin can tear through skin and bone with ease, dismembering individuals without another thought.

Bankai: "Sansei-jū no nageki no ame." (酸性獣の嘆きの雨, "Grief's rain of the Acidic Beast")

Bankai Special Ability:

Ame no Han'i (雨の範囲, "The Range of Rain")

Akarui's initial release of her Bankai seems as though there is no effect taken until the skies above darken and claw their way from the center that is her. Rolling clouds of grey become billowy and dark as they soon release acidic rain that possesses the same capabilities that she possesses with her Zanpakuto in Shikai form alone. This acidic rain is detrimental to both enemies and allies, which is why she hesitates to bring it forth under any circumstance, save for the extreme. Upon officially gaining her Bankai, the vicious scorpion has been ordered to keep it locked away by the Commander himself. The range of her release has not been tested, but to say that she is able to cover a wide array is being unkind. Akarui's immense spiritual pressure is intense and the destruction zone can only grow heavier the farther the clouds roll. Towards the edge, the rain is much heavier, forcing opponents to either retreat back from her or break through the storm in order to face her directly in order to completely end the deathly rain. Safe from the effects of her own destructive properties, Akarui is capable of creating a "safe zone" for those closer to the eye of the storm which is the placement of her initial release, though she has the ability to move it at any time and having the safe zone move as she does. However, under the guise that it is simply normal rain otherwise, Akarui uses that moment's confusion to strike hard and strike fast. The First Division's Scorpion is not one to waste time in order to have fun when the safety of those allies of hers is at risk.

Personal Relationships:
79b63c29b043bb37127df70da09fbb5f.png

Captain Commander Higen Kagayaki: If the sun was alive, that is how she would describe the former Tenth Division captain. Loud, boisterous, and oiled up in the most serious of occasions, Akarui wouldn't dare to badmouth the former Head Lieutenant before his promotion, but he was for sure a strange man. Never even managing to hold a conversation during her lower seated years, Akarui simply looked on at the future shining captain in disdain, just as she does now. The amount of energy he possesses is unmatched, and she can only feel a bit of sympathy towards those in his division. However, his energy had found its way back into the First Division once more as he was inducted as the new Captain Commander, and later on, had somehow become her husband, and then eventually the father of their child, Haruki. The pairing of these two is something that most, if not all, had not seen coming. A bright, ball of energy paired with a small, dark entity had come together in holy matrimony.

Head Lieutenant Fuyuko Kasumi: The two of them don't speak much. And since her promotion, Akarui spends most of her time still patrolling the gates despite the task being handed down to Enji Aikawa. Akarui has her respect for Fuyuko for being able to have kept the Commander from doing stupid things after all of this time, and she can only be thankful that he had managed to find someone as caring as her to watch over him upon his departure from the First Division. Akarui considers the new Head Lieutenant to be just as headstrong as the former Oki woman, if not more. Her eyes will be on how she continues to perform, and assist when necessary, but Rui doubts that it will get to that point.

Shobatsu Murasaki: Like a moth to a flame, Akarui was drawn to the power showcased by the foreign entity upon his arrival. As he took the helm of the Head Captain, she abandoned the Fourth Division in search of greater things, and she found them within the First Division beneath Commander Murasaki's rule. Where the strong command, the weak will follow, Akarui wanted to be on the other side of the spectrum for selfishness and righteousness. If there were anyone other than her mother that she would lay her life down for, it would be for him. Had he ordered it, it would come to be.

Honoka Oki: While most shinigami, male or female, feel at ease in the presence of the Head Lieutenant, Akarui can't help but feel awkward at their clashing personalities. While Honoka usually holds herself highly in the face of others, Akarui often tries to do the same, but the ever-present scowl on her face says otherwise. All etiquette lessons were wholly lost after a series of events, and she asks Honoka to teach her the ways of a graceful lady, but it has been close to two hundred years since the beginning of their lessons. No progress was made.

Kiku Shunkan: One of the laziest individuals she's ever come across. She often wonders how he had stepped into the First Division, but does not say it aloud. Obviously, the Commander had seen something in him that she didn't, so she didn't argue against his choice. Despite having two separate jobs, Rui finds herself running into him more times than anyone else.

Yami Mochizuki: With the closeness in their positions, Akarui has often found herself coming across Yami less than Kiku. However, unlike Kiku, Rui doesn’t hold back against confronting Yami over the smallest things. Going against him doesn’t feel like abusing her power. Regardless of how many times she’s challenged him in the past, she refuses to let up even just a bit. However, their terms of endearment are unexpected as she refers to Yami as Mochi (餅, "rice cake") as he calls her Rui.

• Akarui sweats very often due to her impatient nature, adding to her already uncomfortable presence.
• Despite evolving into a mother, Akarui seems to have only gotten stricter, proving to be ultimately stifling to her other division members.
• Akarui likes to bake and is noted as having a sweet scent to her.
• If she has nothing to do on patrol -- which is more often than not -- Akarui brings Jacks to play with in her spare time.

Biography:
Sired from a night with a courtyard maid, Akarui Gekkō was the eighth and only illegitimate child of the Clan Lord, Yūutsuna. Separated from her mother, Akarui was placed under the care of a nanny that reported directly to the Lord's wife, Kojika. She was to learn as the other children did, from training, studies, and proper etiquette. Though not amongst one of the Four Great Noble families, Gekkō had ties to the Kuchiki and Shihōin, in prospects of wanting to set their children in an arranged marriage with the other clans. Even Akarui, despite her tainted blood, was to be selected for marriage upon her coming of age.

Though priorities were not always on Akarui, she lacked nearly half of the necessities given to the older children and was forced to accommodate by herself to be able to stay on their level, but she had a natural talent to things, picking up on things much quicker than the other children, and advanced faster than they ever could. It was the only way that she could get noticed by her father, whom she so desperately wanted to please. All her efforts were made with success as she managed to get a special summons with her father one day, much to Kojika's chagrin.

One night, Akarui was attacked by a foreign entity, gaining the scar she bears on her jaw to this day. Had it not been for a guard nearby, her life would have ceased to exist that night. No one talked of that night out of fear of endangering their own lives. Upon investigation, it was none other than her nanny, and Akarui was angry. Angry because she knew who exactly ordered the assassination, and angry that her father did nothing to the woman that dared to take his child's life. Though after the exchange, the contact stopped, and Akarui was forced into a rut where she struggled against the other children as they began beating on her, day in and day out.

Even as she graduated from Shino'o Academy, the abuse didn't stop, but things started to change after her admittance as the Fourth Division's third seat. Yūutsuna had gotten sick and succumbed to his illness within three months. By then, the eldest child was ready to take the position as Clan Lord when he too fell ill. It continued, taking every child down the line. It caused an uproar, sparking the controversy that someone was targeting the central family, or rather the heirs, but by then, it was far too late, and all that was left was Akarui and Kojika.

"You should've killed me yourself that night."

"Rui! Sweet Rui, you wouldn't kill me! I-- I gave you what I could. It was all your father! Your father orchestrated everything that night! It wasn't me, please!"

"I'm offering you the courtesy of taking care of you myself. The others didn't get this luxury."

All that was left was Akarui, who forced the Gekkō to acknowledge her as the Clan Lord. No one would oppose her any further, and she felt... empty. She wanted more power, more strength so that no one would rise against her. She was stuck in a loop, heeding her duties and learning all that she could from her lieutenant and captain. As Lieutenant Shihōin once was a member of the Second Division, Akarui advanced in the arts of Hohō and Zanjutsu. The Gekkō Clan Head gained mastery over the use of projectiles from throwing stars to needles and those of the likeness, capable of hitting a target with the precision of a seasoned marksman from distances unmatched. With her Captain, Akarui gained a sense of an unparalleled specialty over toxins and knowledge of the human body; where to strike and how hard to hit them was an adamant topic of discussion. Finishing off an opponent quicker than they could ever register they'd been hit was the ultimate victory.

However, those days ended within the blink of an eye. After the disappearance of Captain Kuchiki and Lieutenant Shihōin, Akarui was angry. The might of a captain and lieutenant was unraveled so quickly, Rui went mad and locked herself away. She was furious: angry that her Captain and Lieutenant had been taken away, angry that she wasn't able to do a thing. Akarui was livid that so many others perished on the pursuit to reclaim their Fourth Captain. The Gotei 13 was left in shambles, for Commander Shunkan had fallen right along with them. It was on this day that Akarui Gekkō had shed tears and cried in silence at the loss of her beloved Captain and Lieutenant.

And then, Shobatsu Murasaki took the helm of Captain Commander, and he sparked a fire in Akarui, a flame that burned brightly in pursuit of power. She took the initiative, taking leave from the Fourth Division to follow the new Captain Commander, and was recruited into the First Division after much deliberation. Day in and day out, the Gekkō Clan Head poured blood, sweat, and tears to get to that fine line between what separated the wolves from the sheep. Sacrifice meant nothing on this path, and she would do as she must, carrying the title of Clan Head, but first and foremost, the then Sixth Seat of the First Division.

There has been a regime change as Shobatsu Murasaki returned to Muken, and the former Head Lieutenant Oki had disappeared. Higen Kagayaki had taken the helm and had brought along Fuyuko Kasumi to stand at his side as the new Head Lieutenant. Akarui had only suffered in silence as she had once against gone through a repeat of what had happened during the Shattered Dimensions event in the Fourth Division. However, over the course of a century, Akarui had gained plenty more, even going so far as to become a mother over this time. If history were to repeat itself once more, she is unsure and doubtful that her sanity would stay intact.

Personality:
The very incarnation of duty, and responsibility, Fuyuko has often been likened to a living, breathing daily planner. Though Captain Kagayaki may head the division, it is Fuyuko who is seen running it. Though appearing quiet and unimposing, the Vice-Captain tends to harp on her Captain and the other members of the division to adhere to their duties and given tasks. If there are missions to be accomplished, or meetings needing to be attended, she does her best to ensure that both she and her Captain arrive prompt and on time, if not early.

Despite not being a seasoned fighter, she stays true to the Squad’s daily morning training regiment, ensuring both her and her comrades’ skills remain sharp for any eventuality.

Quiet when she needs to be, but clear and bold when needing to be heard. Fuyuko, despite coming off as brazen to some is simply nothing short of honest about both her thoughts and her feelings. Those closest to her know her to be a calm and caring soul, going out of her way to aid those in need of help, or those unsure about their duties or themselves.

Though a colorful social butterfly she is, even she has times where she needs to step back, separating herself from others. Seen largely as a Diplomat, she prefers words and pen over those of the sword. One should not however, take this as a sign of weakness on her part. Despite preferring diplomacy over violence, one may still wish to avoid earning her ire. Less likely to dirty her own hands in vengeance, she has a number of indirect ways for which to exact her fury.

As members of her squad well know, hell has no fury like a scorned Fuyuko.

Reiryoku Level: High Spiritual Power-
Fuyuko’s despite her humble appearance, her body houses a rather considerable amount of spiritual power. This very same power becomes evident as she weaves and casts spell after spell with considerable potency.

Sensing Reiryoku: Expert-
Due to a trauma experienced earlier in her life, as well as her own subtle sense of paranoia, Fuyuko has subconsciously honed her Reirkoku to a notable degree. She remains rather sensitive to the reiatsu of both friend and foe alike –– able to detect the spiritual pressure of others as well as gauge their distance, placement, and speed of travel with frightening accuracy. It is a talent born from her desire to protect herself and those around her from the unseen dangers lurking within the shadows and their blind spots.

Reiryoku Control: Great Control-
By her own admittance, Fuyuko’s control is nothing to write home about, desiring to further strength and refine her own command over her spiritual power. she has enough control to regulate the flow and power of her Kido Spells when cast, ensuring her success rate in the spell’s execution as well as its duration. It is something that she continued to work and meditate on within her daily life, desiring to reach the point of mastery that would allow her to cloak and mask her own spiritual power.

Reiatsu: Specialist-
As noted, Fuyuko Kasumi is a vessel of considerable pools of spiritual power––with this power, comes an equally impressive pressure of which she exploits. Though her control over the flow of her reiryoku could certainly use improvement, the Vice-Captain appears to have no qualms or issues when it comes to exerting her reiatsu, especially when her mood is anything less than hospitable. She is able to resist being suppressed for at least a few moments against those with greater power before succumbing, and in kind, can oppress those less versed in their own control, and less blessed in terms of reserves.

Reiatsu Colors:
Her reiatsu when exerted, appears to hold a dark crimson tint to it.

bb63aa7f644490d901bc2e5477503845.png

Reiatsu Shape:
At times when agitated, or fully and forcefully exerting her reiatsu, the apparition of a large towering skeleton––resembling a Gashadokuro, can be seen behind her. When it does appear it is often accompanied by a sound like the chattering of teeth and the rattling of bones.

Reiatsu Effect(s): Stunning
When angered, or deemed necessary, Fuyuko’s reiatsu is potent enough to stun those beneath her in terms of power, potency and control, causing them to think twice about whatever thoughts they were daring to express, or act they would dare to make.

Reiatsu Type: Standard Type

Zanjutsu Level: Expert Swordsman
She is certainly no master of the blade, preferring pacifism and words over the way of the sword. This causes some to mistakenly believe the Vice-Captain to be completely incompetent in swordplay, a foolish notion on their part. Despite her own beliefs and preferences, Fuyuko has dedicated much time to communicating with and understanding her zanpaktuo, evident in her mastery over her shikai, and having managed to even obtain her bankai. Her swordsmanship is incredibly formal, her every sword swing surprisingly gentle as it sweeps past weak and faulty defenses to cleave through flesh and bone.

Hohō Level: Shunpo Expert
Unversed in anything outside of the basics, Fuyuko is still weak in her practice of shunpo. Still, she finds herself capable of keeping up with most of her peers, though still requiring several more steps to cross great distances where others more learned, would need only one or two steps. After moving rapidly in quick succession she becomes noticeably winded, demanding a moment’s reprieve to regain her breath and bearings.

Hakuda Level: Hakuda Combatant-
One of her weaker skill sets given her size and frame, Fuyuko isn’t one to readily engage in any form of combat, but is even less likely to willingly jump into a confrontation requiring hand to hand combat. She knows just enough to keep lower seated and unseated shinigami in line, for a few brief moments before risking becoming overwhelmed.

Kido Skill Level: Kidō Expert-
Since her day’s in the Academy Fuyuko had already garnered praise and recognition for her talent in Kidō, so much so that the Fifth Division had attempted to scout and recruit her before she even graduated. Considered a virtuoso of sorts in the art, she is incredibly adept at casting both Bakudo and Hado spells, and reading the flow of reiryoku in spells to understand their strength. Fuyuko can forego the incantations of the various Kidō she can use, weave spells together together, and has even secretly created a spell unique to her. There are those who feel the blossoming Vice-Captain would serve better in the Kidō Corps.

Inventions:
Ōkokkaku Bōheki (大骨格防壁, “Great Skeletal Bulwark”; Viz. “Giant Skeleton Barrier) - A custom spell created by Fuyuko sometime during her career. She regards it as her greatest achievement, and her strongest barrier. It is generally considered a fail safe, often choosing to abstain from using it where many may see. Joining her hands together as if offering a prayer she casts the spell. Similar to Kin, Fuyuko’s spell thus far, appears to be broken into two parts. In its first portion, the spell forms a skeleton bearing crimson colored bones, crouched over whatever Fuyuko has designated as if pulled into a fetal. It is said to hold defensive power equivalent to Bankin, a level 99 Bakudo spell. In its second part, should she be forced to do so, the bones begin to gain musculature, increasing the spells defensive quality another hundred fold.

Zanpakutō Name: Hibiki-kotsu (響き骨, “Sounding Bone”; Viz. “Bone Echoing”)

Zanpakutō Appearance:
3bb2467ed8d908a6ee8336b30063c3ff.png

Hibiki-kotsu while sealed, takes the appearance of an elaborate yet foreboding katana. Its crimson scabbard seems to be decorated with a flame-like pattern as what appears to be cracks cascade down its length. Its handle is decorated with a blue cloth, specks of gold holding it to the blade’s guard. The blade’s ominous appearance is one that seems to clash with the gentle looking Fuyuko.

Zanpakutō Spirit:
f4a848e0e1d2d373b91e56c0cd2fe10e.png

The spirit of Hibiki-kotsu, when it so chooses to reveal itself, depicts a towering Gashadokuro ( 餓者髑髏, "Starving Skeleton"; "Giant Skeleton") the chattering of teeth and rattling of bones prevalent within its world.

Inner World:
a3860b7e27ec8cf9240ea31b81fc7c27.png

Beauty and horror, coalesced into one, that is the world in which Hibiki-kotsu resides in. Hill and mountaintops composed entirely of bones, grass has grown over them, soft and lush verdant carpet allowing for a gentler walk through this slightly macabre yet picturesque world.

Release Phrase: Sorera karu kuruwaseru, Hibiki-kotsu (それら駆る狂わせる, “Make them Crazy, Sounding Bone”; “Drive Them Mad, Bone Echoing”)

Shikai:
449013515915239c790552084f66df23.png

Once releasing the restraints on her zanpakuto, Hibiki-kotsu morphs into a sparkling white bone-colored nodachi with tooth like blades going down along the length. Where a blade’s tip would normally be now resides an almost canine shaped skull with mouth closed, the length of the blade holding a resemblance to a skeletal spine.

Shikai Special Ability:
As one would expect from its appearance, Hibiki-kotsu is a rather durable blade, the bones that appear to compose its design more durable than standard, further reinforced by Fuyuko’s reiryoku. Able to smash through many an obstacle, the tooth-styled blades cascading down its length make it more suited for shredding and tearing rather than cutting. What one does not expect, is Fuyuko’s ability to extend the blade, allowing her to manipulate it more like a whip than anything. Tendon like threads connect the various bladed joints, the skull head able to be used as well. From here Fuyuko may use Hibiki-kotsu to entangle her opponents, puncturing into their flesh with the blades, and direct the skull to clamp and bite down on whatever unfortunate soul may be her quarry within that moment.

8ba4b0f52da677757909222f8b502f91.png

As difficult as this is to deal with in the heat of combat, still it pales in comparison to Hibiki-kotsu’s power. The power of her shikai is known as Hone Ishoku (骨移植, “Bone Grafting”). With each successful strike of her blade upon the body of her opponent, begins the grafting or restructuring of their skeletal frame. Bones become thinner, more fragile and brittle. Generally after a seventh or eighth strike fractures begin to surface along the victim’s bones, though stronger opponents tend to resist up to the twelfth or thirteenth strike. Each and every movement only furthers the pain from these now delicate bones, accelerating the process of the bones completely breaking. It is usually the inevitable outcome, as repeated strikes from Hibiki-kotsu ultimately causes the weakened, brittle and (eventual) fractured bones to splinter and break. Conversely while in its whip-like state instead of weakening the bones, it causes extra bone growth within the body of Fuyuko’s victims, an excruciating process as bones press against flesh, tissue and organs from within.

Hone Nashi Kūsō (骨なし空想, “Boneless Fantasies): Hibiki-kotsu’s second power. From the skull adorned at the head of her blade, its mouth opens as it begins to exhaust a smoke like mist. The mist spreads to encompass the immediate area surrounding Fuyuko and her opponent, serving as a smoke screen. In truth, this smokish mist are but bones ground into dust. Simply being present within it bears no harm, however should one inhale its contents, they find their mind slowly hazing over as memories begin to temporarily fade. The process is negligibly slow at first, one hardly noting what is taking place as distant and inconsequential memories are usually the first to go. The more of the mist they inhale, the longer they are deprived of their memories. A blow from Hibiki-kotsu extending this time frame with each strike. One strike imprisons their memories for an hour, two strikes for two, the duration being cumulative in nature. Once one has left the boundaries of the mist, they are able to forego concern of any further memory loss.

Bankai: Hibiki-kotsu Jisatsu (響き骨自殺, “Sounding Bone Immolation”; “Bone Echoing Suicide”)

Bankai Special Ability:
When releasing her bankai, the empty sockets of Hibiki-kotsu’s skull on the blade begins to glow, its mouth opening as it ceaselessly exhausts a dense and heavy mist, obscuring one’s surroundings, and one’s perception and visual of Fuyuko. Those trapped within the boundaries of her bankai lose their sense of direction, every route taken trapping them in a perpetual loop. As they remain within her bankai an inexplicable sense of paranoia begins to creep within even the bravest of souls. It starts off as mere concern, their pulse and heart rate as adrenaline pumps through them causing heart palpitations. The opponent for all intents and purposes perceives themselves isolated within this world of fog, no sound beyond those produced by themselves persist within, echoing throughout the expanse of white haze.

As demoralizing as this is, it is nothing but a mask to veil the dangers lurking underneath. Despite hearing nothing, and sensing nothing the opponent is incapable of shaking the feeling of eyes ever bearing down on them. The feeling strongly compels them to turn around and investigate, the jaws of a massive skull snapping down upon their body or limbs, causing death or dismemberment. There is little to no room for maneuverability or evasion, almost as if the skull is, at all times, merely inches away from them..an unshakable shadow seeking to devour them at the earliest sign of weakness, every time one turns to gaze behind them. Though a difficult task, turning away before the jaws (or whatever medium or limb the Gashadokuro wishes to use) makes contact, causes it to disappear, no damage being dealt, appearing just as swiftly in kind each time one may turn around to investigate.

Even should they resist the overwhelming urge to turn around at the invisible eyes gazing holes into their very being, there still remains Fuyuko herself.

While her zanpakuto loses its ability to weaken one’s bones, its power to sprout and grow bones becomes dominant and stronger. Wherever her blade so lands, bones sprout and jut jaggedly to assault all within their reach, while also growing within the bodies of those unfortunate enough to receive a blow from her blade.

Biography:
Abandoned at the temple gates of a humble village, Fuyuko would never come to see her parents’ faces, know their names, or ever hear their voices. Though essentially an orphan, it was never a source of despair for her. Trained and raised as the local Shrine Maiden, she accepted her neighbors and those within the village as her family. She was taught to read, write, along with a variety of other tasks including a ritualistic dance that was often performed for sacred cleansings.

Being spiritually adept, she was able to see ghosts and spirits and worked diligently to protect the living, while cleansing harmful spirits, and granting peace to tortured lingering souls. Her training was arduous, to say the least, and was a daily routine, never truly completed. It disciplined her, teaching her to always bear a smile, not showing signs of distress when pressured, or disgust when faced with the spirits she would have to dispel and cleanse. Her every breath, her very life was devoted to the people, and more importantly, the Kami.

Through rituals and chants, song and dance from days of old she communed with the divine, ever seeking their guidance and patronage. This was to be her life forever, guided and protected by the gods she served. Or so she thought.

Though centuries, and millenia have passed, and memories of her days as a human are but broken and faded remnants, they still bleed into her dreams at night. The frantic ringing of the bell still resounds loudly in her ears, screams and cries of both pain and horror filled the air, as chaos consumed the quaint village, and fire illuminated the night, devouring home and man in its murderous blaze. Raiders had made their way to the village, and with their visit came death. They stole, pillaged, raped and murdered.

The gentle shrine maiden watched helplessly as those she had come to know and love as family were killed indiscriminately. She mustered up what little strength had not abandoned her, rushing inside to save someone. A friend? No, someone dearer, closer to her. A sister, though no blood tied them as such, their love for one another had formed their own familial bond.

Her heart's desire would never come to be, a spear impaling her from behind, held by one of the murderous raiders. She struggled to no avail, as she was pinned to the ground, coughing up blood as she felt her strength wane and her life begin to fade. Left for dead as her attacker left, setting the temple ablaze, Fuyuko continued to stubbornly resist death’s call. She pushed and struggled, hands barely holding any strength pulled and pried at the spear until finally it was forced out.

The pain was beyond anything she had ever felt, her vision blurred as blood continued to spill from the open wound. Screams and the crackling of fire are all that she hears before she falls into darkness. It’s the same nightmare every time, causing her to wake up in a cold sweat, short of breath.

Beyond those nightmares lies her life as a shinigami. Her life anew began in Sakahone (逆骨, Reverse Bone), the 76th District of Rukongai. It was evident she held more spiritual power than others, leading to her inevitable recruitment from the Soul Society. She would eventually join the Tenth Division, her early years within the squad less than heartwarming. When Captain Kagayaki selected her as his Lieutenant there were many protests and plenty of backlashes. Even now she still works to ignore the eyes of envy and disgust from those believing themselves her better. Still, she works to prove to her comrades and herself, that her Captain’s trust in her was not misplaced.

Notable Features:
Jatiri has somber eyes that appear as if they're working some sort of magic unknown to onlookers. Through his composed and serious gaze, there's a sultry allure. On the rare occasion that he's caught in one's peripheral view, most commonly, they come to notice his glossy gaze, peering at them. They speak and he listens, yet seldom does he reply. He continues to consume them with his gaze, and it's not a blank gaze. No, it's far more attentive than that. Those who look into his eyes are often caught in a tug o' war of sorts, wondering who'll look away first. Some have come to believe he can hear their soul. They tend to avoid looking in his general direction when he does enter a room. So if they haven’t already seen him, they've most likely not caught on to the fact that he's there, watching.
jatgoofy.png

Personality:
Jatiri is a calm and optimistic individual who has an alluring charm about him. When he speaks, he leads with cleverness and deep insightfulness. Though he resembles a young boy, he's thought to be wise beyond his years, evoking a sage-like quality in his manner. In addition to being innately wise, he's never afraid to voice his opinions. It doesn't matter if he's in the presence of the commander himself, he says his piece. However, aside from rare moments driven by passion, Jatiri isn't the talkative type; in fact, he's known to maneuver about with a shroud of silence, always observing and assessing those around him. Many consider him to be a mysterious figure while others believe he's downright menacing for the way he carries himself, prying and collecting crucial information, almost appearing like he’s keeping tabs.

Jatiri has always lived life in his head, pondering and contemplating a myriad of thoughts. These thoughts can range from mistakes he's made in battle, to having stolen water in his younger years. Moreover, self-reflection is very important to him. To have delved into himself and have ruminated upon past encounters and enduring beliefs has assisted him in keeping a level-head.

If one asks him why he decided to join the Gotei 13, his response is somewhere in the ballpark of notoriety, honor, or balance, but none of that is true. Why he joined was to escape from his dreadful life in the slums of Rukongai. All that he's witnessed there has taught him to be diligent, patient, and cautious in his dealings with others, only trusting a select few. The streets of Rukongai were absolutely gruesome for him, yet the young soul never lost his civility. Where it's unpopular to dream beyond the present moment, Jatiri longed for the chance to be more. He made a conscious decision to outlive the warlords who mindlessly gut each other in the stinking streets, to do away with petty schemes, to seek out the unforeseeable tides of destiny.

Reiryoku Level: Great Spiritual Power
Mountainous, his Reiryoku is strongly felt. It travels on and on, never seeming to arrive at a destination. His Reiryoku occupies every bit of space and refuses to settle, and like an endless sea, it flows without interference. He’s always stood out for his enormous reservoir of spiritual power. “Golden boy” is what he was dubbed when attending the Shin'ō Academy, being absolutely peerless in Reiryoku. Having come a long way from being overwhelmed by it, he’s no longer made uneasy by it, no longer unable to influence it. When exerted, it certainly announces his presence over vast distances, possibly attracting unwanted attention. Luckily, he’s able to masterfully control his Reiryoku. Rather than it pouring out uncontrollably, he guides and regulates the amount emitted.

Sensing Reiryoku: Master
What Jatiri has achieved through centuries of developing his sensory ability is exceedingly difficult to replicate. He detects Reiryoku and effortlessly distinguishes its subtle patterns, observing the very rhythm and breaks in rhythm when Reiryoku shifts around from being flexed or suppressed. Following Reiryoku patterns, he senses spiritual beings' mental and physical state, feeling whether they’re stressed or injured. In battle, he’s quick to perceive an opponent’s attacks. One of his means of achieving this is by keeping track of their Reiryoku as it always exposes them. As long as he can do that, even with his back to his opponents, he detects them and their attacks.

Reiryoku Control: Mastered Control
Controlling Reiryoku is an especially important skill to him. To reach his level of control, he’s trained for years and years. There was no shortcut, no easy way to achieve mastery. One second his Reiryoku is there; the next, poof--It’s gone. Without warning, it becomes erased. He evades even those most adept at sensing with it under wraps, his presence nearly impossible to trace. He's a predator who shadows his prey, selecting when and where to make his assault. So adept is he at manipulating Reiryoku that he employs just enough, never exceeding the amount necessary to trample his foes. This has promoted a stellar aptitude to endure long-winded bouts against capable, blood-thirsty killers without faltering in the slightest.

Reiatsu: Master
He’s long since realized the value of reiatsu, long since realized the value of standing his ground against powerful opponents. He’s never liked feeling as though he has to succumb to their will or feeling as though he’s defenseless against them. He wishes to hold his own. He wishes to be able to compete. To that end, he does what he can to increase his reiatsu’s strength. Provided that he flexes the Reiryoku accumulated inside him, it surfaces as an enormous globe, brutalizing the surrounding environment through its undying existence. Reminiscent of a planet, the blue globe is scrutinized from miles apart, spelling trouble for anyone within its proximity.

Jat4Aura.png

Reiatsu Shape: Sphere

Reiatsu Effect(s): Killer Clutch

Until his pressure is felt for miles, none can fathom the lengths he’s gone to strengthen it. To mold himself into a weapon of mass annihilation isn’t necessarily his goal although his mountainous spiritual pressure undeniably manifests as such. Testimonials have suggested that Reiatsu like his is unheard of, dampening the wills of those who resist it. Clasping opponents like globs of clay, the bone-shattering Reiatsu seeks to compress their bodies and reconfigure their shape as they struggle to draw breath. While masters better cope with its violent, kneading effect, resisting the pressure is leisurely, demanding tremendous focus and mental toughness.

Reiatsu Type: Standard Type

Zanjutsu Level: Swordsman
Zanjutsu (斬術, Swordsmanship; Viz "Art of the Sword")

A true swordsman puts the sword over any other weapon. A true swordsman is the opposite of Jatiri. He isn't nearly as infatuated with a sword as many of his peers. Although a blade is their primary weapon, it serves as little more than a substitute, second-rate tool to Jatiri, who vandalizes enemies using his iron fists. The few times he's displayed his swordsmanship have involved toying with opponents to read on their skill set. If he's capable of this much, one can infer that his own sword skills must be exceptional enough to hang with his contemporaries for a time. His manner of handling his Zanpakuto is skillful, and just by observing his handling, one can easily deduce that some time has gone into bettering his technique.

203871.gif

Hohō Level: Shunpo Master
Hohō (歩法, Step Method; Viz "Fast Movement")

Flickering across a battlefield, Jatiri will clobber hordes of hollows before they even know what hit them. An opponent may catch a glimpse of him before he’s gone, seemingly removed from existence. Then, magically, he reappears, not allowing a sound to escape him nor remaining in one place for too long. His afterimages are likely to be confused with him. Lasting, they give the impression of multiple Jatiris for a time. When he’s upon opponents, there’s hardly any time for them to make out his form, much less react to his startling speed. Quick to react to any sudden changes, he maneuvers in ways that hinder opponents from moving in on him however they wish.

Known Techniques: Senka, Speed Clones, Utsusemi

Hakuda Level: Master Hakuda Combatant
Hakuda (白打, White Hits; Viz "Hand-to-Hand Combat")

Slick with his hands, he pummels his opponents by dishing his battering bare knuckles. So swift is the execution of his hand strikes that a series of them can be mistaken for one. Layering these imperceptible punches is an art form that Jatiri has long since perfected, disfiguring his foes with near-simultaneous flurries seemingly targetting several vitals at once. By corkscrewing his fists with a swiftness, allowing momentum to take its course, he generates enough cutting power from the fist's rotation to cut through tough materials like rocks and metals; however, his dynamite fists are typically bludgeoning hammers, smashing through an opponent. What he's accomplished with his fists alone is undeniably extraordinary although his time in the streets has taught him to utilize his hands in ways that aren't formally taught in schools like the Shin'ō Academy as the methods are considered too savage-like. For instance, he's liable to tear out organs, tear off limbs, tear opponents in half, even squeeze the life out of them. Grappling is also an integral fighting skill that Jatiri employs to either restrain an opponent, strike one with greater accuracy, or break off the limbs of one. While Jatiri's other limbs can be used for striking, oftentimes, he finds his hands to be preferable.

Known Techniques: Tessho, Tsukiyubi, Gatoringu Jidanda, Sandobaggu Bīto, Kazaguruma, Kagamibiraki, Mashiro Doroppu Kikku, Ikkotsu, Sokotsu, Chōhigezutsuki, Oni Dekopin, Raioken

Webp.net-resizeimage_3.png

Kido Skill Level: Kidō Expert
Kidō (鬼道, Demon/Spirit Way; Viz "Demon Arts")

The true value of Kido isn’t lost upon Jatiri. While many brawlers shy away from it, he sees the opportunity to seize additional power. During his time in the academy, he was taught that a spell’s power was largely attributed to spiritual power and proficiency in the arts; thus, he’s spent many years methodically practicing and honing his craft. The young hyena was a quick learner, compiling spells at an exceedingly fast rate. Over time, he has learned to cast low-high leveled spells alike.

Known Spells: Sho, Shakkaho, Okasen, Sokatsui, Sōren_Sōkatsui, Haien, Kyokko, Tenran, Seki, Geki, Daichi_Tenyō, Kakushitsuijaku, Tozanshō

Skills and Abilities:

Skilled Tracker

Acquiring the scoop on a fresh, exciting story for the magazine isn’t easy. One has to be sensible, calculated, and creative to obtain the best results. Jatiri, a gutsy shinigami with a knack for tracking vibrations and spiritual energy, uses his strong sensory skills to aid him in achieving such results. His remarkable sense of sight is helpful, seeing with amazing clarity over vast distances, allowing him to observe as events unfold from a healthy range. Not to mention, he sees exceptionally well in low-light conditions. Tracking vibrations that travel through the air, ground, or water is his specialty, which also assists him in stalking his targets. Jatiri is usually aware of the true reality around himself, potentially seeing through mental or optical illusions that may be cast upon him. He finds that many illusions only affect certain senses while lacking in others; for example, an illusion might lack a smell or have no heartbeat.

tumblr_n5lhi4s10h1qe10n4o1_500.gif

Soundless hearing
Jatiri is deaf in the traditional sense. He can't hear noise very well, if at all. Someone can be screaming in his face and at best he'll hear a mutter. Despite this, he became an expert lip reader by watching the flow of words. It took a bit of extra studying on the phonetic alphabet until he could truly master lip reading. Not only does he fill in words at considerable distances with just his eyes but, by feeling one's spiritual pressure, adjusts to their tonal inflection and range. This allows his entire body to detect the subtle shifts in vibrations that sound exudes.

Accelerated Perception
Jatiri registers images at such speeds that many fast-moving attacks normally too fast for others to see are tolerable enough for him to perceive and react accordingly.

Pocket Hercules
His compact frame may give off the impression of weakness, but looks can be deceiving. Not unlike a titan, Jatiri’s deceptive strength is one to be marveled at. Utilizing such strength, he has wielded hundreds of tons during training while utilizing shunpo with his fair share of discomfort, and as he has done so, his footwork has remained swift and finely controlled.

Zanpakuto Name: Fukitsumyaku (不吉脈,“Ominous Pulse”)

Zanpakuto Appearance:
Fukitsumyaku is a pair of sai held in a sash by his sides. The handle of the sai bear light blue.

Illustration1002.png

Zanpakuto Spirit:
Fukitsumyaku is a dark-skinned, old man who bears a resemblance to Jatiri. Between his white, spiky crown and long ponytail that often rests upon the ground, encircling itself several times over, one can easily mistake him to be the young boy’s older relative. Fukitsumyaku is virtuous, ethical, straightforward, and possesses great emotional intelligence. Embodying the role of an advisor, he guides Jatiri. The Zan spirit can be highly temperamental and grumpy, especially when Jatiri ignores his advice or comes to a decision that he disapproves of. Still, he's strongly bonded to Jatiri, holding him in high esteem and believing he can achieve miraculous feats if he so wills it.
image0.jpg

Inner World:
His inner world is a silent, dark, endless canyon suitable for training, pondering, and reflecting. The large, sloping walls act as barricades blocking one’s path at every turn. Jatiri can get lost in a place like this in the same way that he's often lost in his thoughts. The jarring pressure in the atmosphere works to keep him grounded and fortify his will. During training, Fukitsumyako exhibits the role of drill Sargent, leveling the canyon using his sheer might and whipping Jatiri into shape. It isn't uncommon for massive slabs of gravel to fly Jatiri’s way, threatening to take his life should he soften. When Jatiri is at odds with himself, his inner world trembles, evoking powerful quakes.
Release Phrase: Miburui (身震い,"Tremor")

Shikai:
Fukitsumyaku configures around his arms from his fingers to shoulders. In addition, Fukitsumyaku can be willed to vibrate to the point of invisibility.

Shikai Special Ability:
Storing and vibrating kinetic energy, Fukitsumyaku unleashes shockwaves. The shockwaves travel through any medium, such as the ground, seafloor, and air. The shockwaves' strength is dependent on Jatiri's chosen output. Should he desire powerful shockwaves, with effort, he can spawn them. They can then significantly enhance the already destructive power of his hakuda techniques. Able to consume entire battlefields, the shockwaves can travel far. They can blast an incoming attack long before it can hit and can also encompass Jatiri, acting as a violent barrier.

Notable Features:
Despite his unique appearance, Captain Mukuro is a difficult man to take notice of. One is generally unaware of his presence until he willingly reveals himself, or after he has already come and gone. When one does become aware of Kyomu, they immediately take notice of his dark skin, and spiky head of blonde, and most notable, his lack of distinctive eyebrows. When combined with a grimace or look of indifference permanently masked upon his face it is no wonder the man is one of the least popular of the Captains in the Gotei 13. The coldness of his demeanor and the callous manner in which he conducts himself, creates an invisible perimeter that seems to act as a natural ward against all others, fending off those who would draw close consequently ostracizing himself from most of his peers. Foregoing the wearing of the traditional Shihakushō (lit. "死覇装," Garment of Dead Souls”), Kyomu’s half worn haori reveals a tightly fitted top exposing a well sculpted body, built and trained to kill.

After a century, Kyomu has adopted a more standard shinigami attire. He’s grown a small goatee and has since cut his hair considerably shorter than it has been in his youth.

Personality:
A product of selective breeding, Kyomu grew up burdened with great power and an even heavier responsibility. Burdened with the greatest of expectations from his clandestine clan of ruthless assassins, those same burdens are the seeds that bore the fruit of pride and arrogance persisting in the young man to this day. Having been robbed of and denied an actual childhood, Kyomu from a young age was groomed and nurtured to become duty incarnate; a living weapon void of what the Mukuro considered useless such as empathy and morality.

Forged into a peerless blade, he inherently adopted the coldness of steel. Made to be the most potent of poisons, Kyomu’s personality was corrupted, becoming equally toxic. Calm, callous, cunning and ruthless, the fact he became incapable of forming normal bonds with those around him seemed to be an inevitability. He remains dismissive of others and their opinions, while arbitrarily disregarding anyone and anything that does not pique his interest. Among the Captains of the Gotei 13 he is spoken of in the lowest regard.

Still, despite these shortcomings and ill traits, Kyomu is perhaps the most misunderstood out of his peers. While some would paint the man a shameless and vile villain, he is in truth a devoted agent of both duty and honor, albeit in his own way. His ability to use any and every shameless, underhanded and cowardly method to accomplish his tasks and goals, is a testament to the lengths he will go to ensure the successful completion of those tasks entrusted to him.

Greater still is perhaps, his unspoken love and devotion to his subordinates, especially his second in command. While he may appear overly harsh and verbally (and at times physically) abusive towards them, he in truth performs many covert acts to ensure their protection, both directly and indirectly. This fact is proven from his willingness to leave his entire squad in the dark regarding the mission entrusted to him by the Central 46, all to ensure they held genuine plausible deniability to his seemingly traitorous performance.

Over the past century Kyomu has grown physically and mentally more mature. While he still appears silent and indifferent he is less prone to violent emotional bursts when roused to anger. After losing his most faithful subordinate and the events causing him to have multiple members of his squad to go missing, Kyomu who was already prone to distrust others, became more closed off and slower to trust and open up to anyone (not that anyone could tell). More calculative in his thoughts and actions and less forgiving of mistakes and errors as he had been in the past, the chances of a subordinate being cut down or losing a limb in his presence increases proportionally to the level of their failure. Some may believe this conflicts with the Captain’s calmer demeanor, however the punishment for their failure comes not out of a place of anger. In their line of work there can be little room for error, the death and pain issued to them is all according to what he feels is the appropriate consequences for their actions. Weaponizing their fears to hone their skills.

Relatives:
Sometime after his birth, Mukuro was separated from his birth parents to immediately begin his training and indoctrination into the clan’s tenets . As such, he is unaware of the names or even the faces of his mother and father, having only ever had the clan’s elders to raise him.

Reiryoku Level: Immense Spiritual Power
Like a shadow at sunrise and sunset, Kyomu’s reiryoku is as large as it is subtle, quiet and unimposing. As a byproduct of the Mukuro clan’s selective breeding process, even as a small child, Kyomu’s pool of reiryoku rivaled that of a seated shinigami officer. As odd as it was, despite having such overwhelming reserves of power compacted in such a small frame, his reserves seemed otherwise unimpressive, largely due to his ability to subconsciously keep them pushed down and suppressed. Even after training over a Century there are few if any who know the depths of the Phantom’s well of spiritual power, as the full-scale of his spiritual power is rarely ever released. It

After his failed attack on the Captain Commander, and having his abilities and skills halved, Kyomu’s reiryoku reserves became less impressive than they once were. A fact that ultimately caused him to return home to the Mukuro clan to re-hone and re-find himself, using the Spirit Cuffs (呪霊錠, Jūreijō ; lit. Cursed Spirit Shackles) technique of his clan, and continuing to do so for another hundred years. As a result of the harsh regiment Kyomu’s Spiritual reserves, control and pressure have all been strengthened and reinforced.

Sensing Reiryoku: Master
As an Assassin and master of all things covert, Kyomu’s Reikaku (霊覚, "Spiritual Sense"), or Reiatsu Chikaku (霊圧知覚, "Spiritual Pressure Perception"), has always been one of the strongest and most impressive and precise within the Gotei 13. One of his greatest assets, Kyomu has trained and honed this ability to allow him to detect the characteristics, emotions, and even to some degree the intentions within the spiritual pressure of others by reading the changes in the flow of their Reiryoku. Captain Mukuro is, at nearly all times passively processing and utilizing his spiritual awareness even at times without being consciously aware of it, so much so that he is able to actively determine the development of one’s reiatsu and recognize when one is making use of their reiryoku, even if done covertly, ultimately making it near impossible to launch a surprise attack on the man.
375aae609d419c2a85ae48fc752481ce.gif

This ability is able to be used over vast distances, allowing him to perceive others through their reiatsu as if he were standing directly in front or beside them. His Reikaku has been refined to the point that those fixed and magnified beneath the scrutiny of his spiritual gaze are none the wiser to being watched. Showing nary a sign of his silent observation to both friend and foe alike, Kyomu determines the strength of those around him, while discreetly synchronizing his own spiritual pressure with those within the compass of his detection, further veiling himself from their view.

Reiryoku Control: Mastered Control
Similar to his control over his emotions, movements, breathing, and blade Kyomu’s control over his spiritual power is just as strong, just as surgically precise. Every ounce of power is contained and bottled up with the greatest of ease, and least of effort, guided with surgical precision ensuring not an ounce of power is wasted or abused. The Captain’s line of work demands anonymity, and it is that demand that secured his focus on being able to effortlessly hide and blend his own presence and power from people, objects, and spells able to or meant to otherwise detect him.

Like a ventriloquist, Kyomu is able to disguise, and “throw” or project his own spiritual pressure, appearing to be traveling in another direction or standing far from his actual location. It is an ability that is indispensable in deceiving the Reikaku (霊覚, lit. “Spiritual Sense”) of both his observers and any would be pursuers alike.

Further still is Kyomu’s ability to mould and shape his spiritual power, most notably into the likeness of a serpent. Using just his spiritual power alone, Kyomu is able to extend the reach of his blade, allowing him to whip his sword around in impossible and inconceivable angles. To most observers it may appear as a form of telekinesis, but should Kyomu will it or one find themselves able to visually observe and detect spiritual power, they can perceive the glowing serpentine body, extending from the assassin’s hand to the handle of his blade. In a similar method, Captain Mukuro binds the bodies of his targets utilizing his reiatsu, halting and hindering their movements, pulling them closer to his strikes, or anchoring them in place, leaving them victim to whatever cruel devices he may subject them to.

Reiatsu: Master
latest
Reiatsu Type: Standard Type
True to his Epithet and namesake, Kyomu is very much like some ominous specter or phantom conjured from the depths. Surrounded by an air of mysteriousness, moving and approaching without casting a shadow, while leaving without a trace. Like a phantom, Kyomu appears to perpetually exist while lacking a discernable presence, his spiritual pressure respectively, appears equally nonexistent. This is a fact that speaks volumes to the level of both conscious and subconscious, almost instinctive control he has over his reiatsu. So rare is it for one to actually feel or detect it, that its existence and level of strength remain unknown by both peers and subordinates alike. When it does make an appearance, it is like a vapor appearing for the briefest of moments only to then vanish and fade away, as if never having existed to begin with.

Still, it's almost permanent absence is certainly not an indication of lack of strength. Like a serpent camouflaged in the earth, Kyomu’s spiritual pressure at a whim, quietly and inconspicuously seeps and bleeds out, coiling slowly around those targeted by the silent phantom, invisible to all eyes unless Kyomu himself wills it otherwise. Like a python, his spiritual pressure constricts the bodies of the subjects of his present ire, crushing through spiritual pressure, armour, flesh and bone alike of even the most durable of contenders before they’re any wiser to what has taken place. Kyomu may, at times allow his reiatsu to coil about his own body, though rather crushing himself the massive invisible serpent’s form acts as a defensive ward against that which would harm him, reiatsu composed scales deflecting blades and obstructing piercing and penetration of his defenses.

Having mastered his spiritual pressure, Kyomu has a tendency to exploit its use at time, leading others to perceive vivid images of him attacking them from one of several or even multiple angles while he himself remains stationary and observant of their actions and behavior, acting and moving with impunity.

Though a rare occurrence as it is, when Kyomu does exert his reiatsu it has been noted, at times, to take the likeness of a large winding serpent with fangs bared and venomous eyes aglow. Though its appearance slightly alters when seen, it is mostly likened to a viper, given the Captain’s very nature.

Reiatsu Effect(s): Torturous
Though rarely ever felt Kyomu’s reiatsu has become an agent of fear and torment. So intimately intertwined with his Bloodlust or Killing intent (殺気, Sakki, Viz.Murderous Intent”), that those subjected to it have all given varied testimonies regarding their experience. There are those who felt they were being strangled to death, as if a garrote was wrapped tautly around their necks, others felt themselves being stabbed repeatedly. There have been some who testified having had their heart or skull pierced by some projectile, while others swear their throats were cut or necks were snapped. Each account a vivid painful death, and each one worse than the other. As an assassin, an agent of death, Kyomu is skilled and outfitted with killing and disposing of a person a countless multitude of ways, a fact closely reflected and mirrored by his reiatsu. Those exposed to the Captain’s reiatsu, inadvertently find themselves experiencing a rather lucid and graphic assassination. Every assassination an inexplicable success, and each one different from the last, growing crueler and more traumatizing with everyone experienced. Due to this unorthodox experience, no one is able to truly determine what his reiatsu genuinely does, the pain and death all registered as unquestionably genuine, bringing with it paralyzing fear and a type of “death” that one must endure and live through again and again.

Zanjutsu Level: Master Swordsman
Zanjutsu (斬術, Swordsmanship; Viz "Art of the Sword")

A formidable Master Swordsman with blemishless strength, considered a prodigy of the blade seen only once every few dozen centuries. As a swordsman, Kyomu is known to have a rather extensive Maai (間合い, “Interval”), an imperceptible “field” that represents the distance between himself and his opponents, time, speed, angle and rhythm of both their attack and approach. This perimeter seems to, at the very least be equal to the length of both his arm length, and the length of his blade combined. Anyone and anything that enters this invisible field of influence is subject to being indiscriminately cut down without fail, ensuring not even rain may breach this barrier of sorts.

Though trained and mastered in the arts of Kendō (剣道, lit. "Way of the Sword"), Iaijutsu (居合術), and Iaidō (居合道) among many others, both his allies and enemies alike have noted that when in battle, Kyomu himself adheres to no actual stance belonging to any school of discipline. It is because of this, that any perceived opening within his stance (or lack thereof) ultimately cannot be trusted.

The uncertainty within his stance does pose a viable threat to any would-be enemy as it makes it impossible to gauge exactly when and how Kyomu may attack or counter-attack, forcing one to tread and probe the inescapable depths of the unknown, a frightening concept for any combatant. More frightening still perhaps, is the speed in which his blade moves and cuts down his foes. Every strike is incontrovertibly lethal and precise, ever aimed at the vitals and weaknesses of whatever falls beneath the swing of his blade, cutting down all obstacles with the utmost certainty.

The moment one perceives either the drawing or sheathing of his blade, Kyomu has long since already delivered over a dozen attacks. So swift and clean are the strokes of his sword that opponents cut down by his blade are able to generally continue moving for several minutes, as if the swing of his sword has outpaced the actual damage itself. This ultimately means that several minutes later opponents begin to fall apart, as lacerations mysteriously begin to etch themselves along their body before they finally collapse and come undone, the unregistered attack finally taking its toll. As the swiftness of his sword swing ensures clean cuts, when the lacerations finally make their debut, the victims in question are none the wiser as no pain is accompanied with these surgically precise cuts, falling into a state of terror and panic as they watch their body unravel and collapse into finally cut parts.

Further testament to his mastery of the blade, is his ability to completely eradicate the deficiencies and openings that inherently made the Hōzan Kenbu (崩山剣舞, “Fallen-Mount Sword Dance”) impractical in actual combat. So intune with his sword that he is able to stop and alter the course of his attacks mid-swing with no conscious effort on his end.

Hohō Level: Shunpo Master
Hohō (歩法, Step Method; Viz "Fast Movement")

There are many who claim that Kyomu is indisputably the fastest soul in both past and present within the history of Soul Society, and even those such claims do very little to paint a picture of the Phantom’s mastery, underrating the full extent of his capabilities. Considered the foremost practitioner and master of Hohō within all of Soul Society, Kyomu is able to, without any actual effort on his end, cross tremendously exaggerated distances while evading and eluding visual, spiritual and other forms of detection both orthodox and otherwise, all within a single step.

At his slowest, the young Captain still easily outpaces even his own shadow, no ripples are produced upon any water or liquid he treads upon, appearing to erupt into a dark mist when he moves. With the slightest of effort his movements create friction that generates both heat and electricity, produces near tangible after images and short sonic booms and shockwaves in his passing, capable of altering the very trajectory of projectile styled attacks. When choosing to display a glimpse of his full mastery, Kyomu appears at nearly several dozen separate locations, his simplest of steps producing seemingly vivid and tangible images capable of bleeding if attacked and wounded, even while each “speed clone” is hundreds of thousands of miles separated from the other. At the height of his skill, the Phantom truly dons the mantle of his title, outpacing his shadow, presence, sound, and even light becoming essentially invisible as he moves; his shadow, image, presence and any sound willingly allowed to be produced all arriving and manifesting several minutes after he himself has already come and gone, making it impossible for one to tell if one has truly spoken with Kyomu himself, or merely the ghost of his image in passing.

This speed becomes an indispensable weapon in combat, especially in close quarters as it becomes next to impossible to actively perceive his movements or attacks, and if one does catch a glimpse then it is likely because he himself has permitted it. It is an obvious and well known fact that, as the Corps Commander Kyomu has mastered every Onmitsukidō speed-oriented technique, each one a hundred folds faster and more efficient when executed by him.

Hakuda Level: Expert Hakuda Combatant
Hakuda (白打, White Hits; Viz "Hand-to-Hand Combat")

Contrary to his predecessors, Kyomu is no Master when it comes to Hakuda. While used less often than his Zanjutsu or Hohō by far, he is still considered highly proficient in this area of combat. Familiarizing himself with the vital areas of Shinigami, Humans and Arrancar alike, his every strike is swift, fluid and meant to incapacitate them. Well studied in Aikidō (合気道), Jūjutsu (柔術), and Jūdō (柔道), he has repeatedly shown great agility, dexterity and coordination in his attacks, being highly proficient in counterattacks, takedowns, and body locks. His preferred fighting style is considered extremely versatile, aiming at dealing the maximum amount of damage to anyone and anything deemed his opponent or enemy, in the shortest time possible, striking critical points and making ample use of lightning-fast submission holds to incapacitate or kill them.

While unarmed he will opt to keep his distance when faced off against an actual Master of hand-to-hand combat, or if unable to neutralize the threat in a single, critical strike. While growing up within the Mukuro Clan, he was taught a wide array of defensive and escape tactics. After realizing his own shortcomings, Kyomu trained in one of the plethora of styles collected by his clan, the Jakōken (蛇咬拳, “Biting Snake Fist”). Little is known about the style, even within the various districts of Rukongai and the libraries of the Shinōreijutsuin (真央霊術院, Spiritual Arts Academy, “Shin’ō Academy”). What little is known is, it houses a number of immobilizing techniques along with rapid hand and palm strikes. So far no one beyond his Lieutenant is aware Kyomu is training in the style, least of all having seen it.

Kidō Skill Level:Kidō Expert

Kidō (鬼道, Demon/Spirit Way; Viz "Demon Arts")

According to Kyomu, Kidō had always been his weakest skill-set, he has admittedly never invested much time or effort into furthering his ability in this area. Despite his questionable ineptitude in the area, Kyomu is proficient enough to cast low- to mid-level spells without their incantation. Bakudō appears to be the only area of spells that the Captain has ever shown any interest or talent in, and even in regards to those he is selective of the spells he has learned. So rarely is it ever used, that when he does seek to employ the use of spells it is typically unexpected, and offers him a window of opportunity to exploit any gaps it might present in his opponent’s guard, capitalizing on it to ensure his victory in combat. To date, Kyomu has never used, or practiced a single offensive spell. To compensate for his weakness in spellcraft, he will at times use them in conjunction with his tools carried on his person, converting them into mediums for his cast spells to further catch his opponents off their guard.

Skills and Abilities:
92bee1654bed17bf8ef97751496a69af.png

Master Assassin: Since old enough to walk he was trained to hold a blade, and ever since holding a blade he was trained to use it. The act of killing, of taking a life is an art, and he the greatest of artists, producing masterpiece after masterpiece with every swing of his blade. Kyomu has familiarized himself with the anatomy of Humans, Shinigami, Hollow, and Arrancar alike, memorizing their most intimate and vulnerable areas for which to strike. Trained and disciplined in the Mukuro Clan’s art of Silent Killing (無音殺人術, “Muon Satsujin Jutsu”), completely muting his breathing, his footsteps rather in a light gait or a full sprint, to the movements of his very attire, all while erasing his presence and suppressing what little of his reiatsu is unable to be contained by the unique fibers of his ensemble, makes him the deadliest of assassins. When he strikes it is always swift and with certainty, always towards a weak or vital point, and always with the intent to kill with that very same strike and in that very same instant. As the Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō, he has trained and studied all the disciplines of the punishment force, including poison and has thus developed an impressive resistance towards most forms of poisons and toxins. While still a very young and relatively small boy, he was exposed to a variety of torture techniques at the hands of his clan for training purposes, and as such, has developed a rather high tolerance for pain.

Shurikenjutsu: During his time being raised in the Mukuro house, and even from his time in the Onmitsukidō, Kyomu was thoroughly trained in the ways of the hidden blade, especially in regards to Shurikenjutsu (手裏剣術). He has become a Master in the technique, combining his speed and reflexes with highly advanced sleight-of-hand techniques to launch the bladed projectiles with unprecedented speed. When he throws them it is generally impossible to notice or catch the movements of his hands, able to fling them with preternatural accuracy using just his fingers from a casual stance. Aside from the speed and frightening accuracy of his throws, is his ability to alter the trajectory of the shuriken, causing them to arc mid-flight and even further redirecting them by deflecting the shuriken off one another or other nearby surfaces, targeting an opponent’s blindspot more often than not. At the height of his mastery, opponents are generally unaware that anything has been thrown, the projectiles seeming to simply appear at the most inopportune moment for his opponents, and at the grievous of angles.

Master Strategist & Tactician: Kyomu is an extremely perceptive combatant, having impressive instinct and intuition for battle. Despite his arrogance, he is extremely analytical both in and outside of combat, able to accurately deduce an opponent’s attack patterns and weaknesses, and using that information to effectively counter them. Through his training and upbringing Kyomu has developed the ability to read people's expressions, intentions, and most of their actions' reasons with relative ease. He has been shown able to detect if a person is lying or not being entirely truthful, by simply looking at them. He describes the feeling as "wavelengths" or "wavelengths of consciousness" of people that represent their breathing, line of sight, facial expression, body language and much more. This essentially allows Kyomu to find a person's "gap in consciousness" or "openings" where they unconsciously let their guard down, allowing him to exploit those gaps. He is generally aware of everything within his presence, and is able to see through most deceptions.

Zanpakutō Name: Genzōken (幻像剣, “Phantom Sword”)
6b0546b08173c370e360fc07e072a95a.png

Zanpakutō Appearance:
Genzōken at first glance and even on closer inspection appears as little more than a mere Bokutō (木刀, “Wooden Sword”), an odd appearance, especially for an assassin. In reality, the true finely polished and sharpened blade is hidden within the wooden blade shaped scabbard, not unlike certain sword canes. Kyomu states it is meant to give his opponents a false sense of security, making it easier to cut them down. The blade is simple in design, and is often easily overlooked given its mediocre presence.

c72d1f1ec26a61f67f14d5fa1b93b0c5.png

Zanpakutō Spirit:
Genzōken’s physical manifestation takes the form of a mysterious individual dressed in dark colored clothing covered by a layer of body armor. Fingerless gloves with forearms and hand protectors lined with small spikes along the knuckles adorn their hands and forearms. A Gold and Crimson colored mask hides the face beneath, while their left arm is covered in a type of armor equipped with a long sword blade extending from the bottom of the elbow. Genzōken’s gender remains a closely kept mystery and secret, perhaps even from Kyomu himself. It is this reason that he often switches the manner in which he addresses the spirit, switching from addressing the blade as “she” or “her” to having at times referred to it as “this guy”, never once being corrected by Genzōken on which one they prefer or is the technical correct means of addressing them. While Kyomu may be prone to anger, Genzōken’s emotions never waver. Devoted to serving its master, it perceives only the mission — serving and protecting Kyomu. It is for this reason that Genzōken’s words can always be trusted, as they do not believe in joking or teasing about, and most importantly..never lies. This isn’t to say that there exists no deception within the mysterious spirit, who is not above disclosing only half or partial truths. If information is withheld from Kyomu, it is because Genzōken believes disclosing the information would bring more harm than good.

Inner World:
6c3ff06d81535f59b1e7fab1bcc7296f.png

Kyomu’s inner world takes the form of an expansive dark room lined with multiple stylized traditional Japanese sliding doors, a pair of double doors marking the very end, a fine mist creeping along the floor throughout the space. The further one gazes towards the end, the more it appears to grow progressively darker the further out one goes. According to Genzōken, the entire space is a death trap, the room shifting in subtle and exaggerated ways each time the sliding doors open and close.Guillotine blades swing from the ceiling like a pendulum, blades and arrows jut and launch themselves from behind the doors at varying intervals. At times gravity seems so intense one can barely crawl along the ground, at other times it is so light one cannot help but to float. One can pass through the sliding doors only to come across the opposite end of the room, or even along the ceiling. Genzōken has told Kyomu that when his heart is troubled or in disarray, the world spins into chaos, the doors become rotted and riddled with holes, dangling off their hinges, while some simply float and linger in the air. When Kyomu first entered into his inner world to learn to control and utilize his Zanpakutō, he claims to have nearly lost his life a hundred times over at Genzōken’s hand, the spirit able to blend into the darkness and use the mist to further veil its movements, attacking him from his blind spots.

eb5419279b2cba6e726d5ec00bc32273.png

Release Phrase: Genzōken’s shikai is triggered by the command ”Whisper” (囁き, “Sasayaki”), though Kyomu is able to release his blade without its command phrase.

7866c79b777bb6231021b74edcf0672e.png

Shikai:
Unlike most Zanpakutō, Genzōken does not change its physical form in any way while in Shikai making it nearly impossible to tell when Kyomu has actually released the seal on his blade. Simplicity at its finest, the blade remains as unimposing in shikai as it does in its sealed state.
abeefef06313e38c31d0323f6ed1a14a.png

Shikai Special Ability:
Genzōken’s special ability is called Muei-Tou (無影刀, lit. "Shadowless Sword"). Once released Kyomu has the ability to make Genzōken’s blade incorporeal, allowing it to pass seamlessly through anything. Kyomu is able to switch the blade between physical and its intangible state, effectively allowing him to cleave through any substance regardless of its strength, durability or resistance. According to Kyomu, Genzōken postpones the dimension in which they exist, enabling it to pass through all matter, creating the ultimate blade which cannot be stopped. It allows the Captain to bypass a parry or block to cut through the man behind it, to pierce through a wall and cut the body hiding on the other side. Kyomu has displayed such fine control over his shikai that he is able to isolate its ability, using it on merely part of the blade while leaving the rest otherwise unaffected. This ability when combined with the fact it’s appearance never changes along with Kyomu’s ability to quietly release his Zanpakutō makes Genzōken all the more frightening. As there exists nothing that can stop or block the blade, it forces the opponent to have to focus and devote their attention and strategy in overcoming the man wielding the blade rather than the sword itself. While postponing the dimension to become immaterial, the blade becomes unable to produce a shadow, an ode to the ability’s namesake.

Bankai: Genzōken Jūkyo Gaki Bun'ya (幻像剣住居 餓鬼分野; “Phantom Sword Dwelling in the Hungry Ghost Realm”)
Kyomu’s Bankai is a wide-range technique, normally initiated from him holding the blade horizontally. The surrounding area turns dark as if a lens was placed beneath the sun or any source of light. A heavy fog-like mist bleeds into the space around Kyomu, his opponent and any who have not distanced themselves from him prior to the activation of his Bankai, quickly obscuring one’s vision in front and around them. Imperceptible to those within, due to quickly losing sight of the elusive Phantom is the alteration of his attire. His haori, shihakusho are temporarily exchanged for black and maroon colored clothes; purple colored gauntlets that cover both hands, the maroon colored fabric ever flowing as if caught in a perpetual breeze, yet unable to be grasped by anyone or anything. Ignorant to all except Kyomu, who has recognized his attire mirroring those of Genzōken itself. According to the spirit of his blade, it is as if the Captain becomes layered or robed by the spirit, the synchronization of their spirits and reiatsu, and yet another measure taken by the devote spirit to ensure the protection of its master.

Bankai Special Ability:
Being trapped within Kyomu’s bankai is akin to being locked within a haunted house or cemetery. It is a cold and unsettling atmosphere that feeds into the fears and anxieties of those already pressed and wary of facing the ruthless killer in combat. Kyomu may simultaneously appear anywhere and everywhere within the confines of Genzōken Jūkyo Gaki Bun'ya. Those ignorant of his Bankai’s power believe it to be little more than a display of the Phantom’s speed, using the mist to hide his movements and his shunpo to produce clones to attack at multiple angles and overwhelm the opponent. While it is a reasonable assessment, it is terribly wrong. It isn’t until one manages to succeed in landing an attack on him that they discover the horrors of his technique. Their attacks all seem to pass harmlessly through the Phantom as if passing through air, yet his attacks land without fail. Within this field, Kyomu is capable of producing “shadows” — realistic clones of himself that bear his exact likeness down to his very reiatsu. His shadows are completely impervious to all forms of harm, yet are able to attack and harm others. Thanks to Kyomu’s stealth and speed one may not know if it is Kyomu using his infamous Genpo or the Speed Clone technique of the Onmitsukido, or if it is one of these shadows sent to dispatch them.

Once locked within his Bankai one’s initial instinct is typically to leave the boundaries of its effect. Trapped within the impenetrable fog of his technique, escape is considered nearly impossible. One’s bearings are thrown askew, believing themselves to be traveling in a straight line, not knowing the various turns unconsciously taken as they wander blindly through the haunted mist. Up, down, left or right, forward and backwards — all these things become increasingly difficult to determine as their Reikaku becomes useless due to the field. Throughout their aimless wandering there are few who realize another fact of their surroundings, a fact usually only discovered by those disheartened few who attempt to blow away the mist to find their path to freedom, and that is the mist is unaffected by the outside world. One’s movements do nothing to move the mist, no wind or force can blow it away, similar to his blade in its shadowless state the mist is completely intangible. Locked in a darkened world with a mist to blind and distort their perception and sense of direction, with Kyomu and his ghost-like shadows attacking at any time, anywhere the Phantom becomes something akin to the Boogeyman to his enemies. Kyomu is able to conjure at most, up to four of these wraith-like shadows at one time, and has such fine control over them that he is able to only partially conjure one or many, allowing sword wielding blades to manifest seemingly from the surrounding mist to attack his foes. Kyomu alone, is the one thing the mist moves to and for, often a subtle indicator of if and when the genuine Kyomu is on the attack. These shadow avatars of Kyomu are noted to hold all of his abilities and techniques, their blades mirroring the power of his shikai. It should be noted that it is impossible for his shadows to harm him in any way.

•Kyomu has memorized the names, faces and habits of every member of his clan, division and the Onmitsukidō, and is even aware of the names, faces and identities of their family members, lovers and close friends and associates.
•Kyomu is secretly what one might consider an Otaku, his love for sweets and snacks rivaled only by his love for manga, and as a result is a closet fan of any manga that debuts within the SCC.
•It is rumored that Kyomu has killed at least one Vasto Lorde in the past.
•Kyomu has never lost a staring contest.

Fuyuko Kasumi • While coping with the various changes taking place in the Seireitei, the loss of his trusted Lieutenant as she was promoted to Captain, Kyomu confided in very little. Fuyuko's ascension to Head Lieutenant, and consequently the absence of a Lieutenant in 2nd Division forced Kyomu to have to interact with Fuyuko more than he probably would have otherwise. As they interacted more, she crept through the crevices guarding his heart, as small as they may be. The two developed a romantic relationship, kept hidden from the rest of the Gotei 13, a task which was hardly difficult given Kyomu's nature in stealth and discretion. While with Fuyuko, though not prone to smile or show emotions, he is considerably gentler and kinder towards her, the coldness around him dissipating.

Yasu Yūgure • Kyomu’s second in command. He considers the girl little more than a brat, repeatedly reprimanding and berating the girl, chastising her both physically and verbally at almost every hand. He constantly complains the girl is more trouble than she’s worth, yet has never been known to actively make any actual attempt to remove or replace her. Despite his rather cold and callous demeanor, he usually forces the Lieutenant to become an accessory on what he has dubbed his ‘snack runs’, dragging her along. Though he states he doesn’t care what becomes of her, this is often disputed from his acts of interfering with anything that might truly endanger her, casually and coincidentally safe guarding her from any true mortal danger. Since her promotion to Captain of the Ninth Division, the two have hardly interacted, uncertain if it is due to their respective responsibilities, or from Kyomu intentionally keeping her at arm's length after leaving him.

Honoka Oki • Though now the Vice-Captain to the Captain Commander in the First Division, she was once the Lieutenant of the Second Squad. He met Lieutenant Oki when he was still rather young, operating in the Stealth Force. Due to the indoctrination of his Clan’s methods he was ignorant to many things that children of his same age group had already experienced and enjoyed, such as sweets. Lieutenant Oki, noted the boy’s sour disposition and lifeless eyes became rather annoyed at his apathetic demeanor, force feeding the boy some strawberry flavored pocky she had recently purchased. It was the first time he had ever tasted such a thing, and hails as the hallmark for what would become his love of snacks, especially Strawberry Flavored Pocky. Though often seemingly aggravated at her words, and even her actions and familiarity with others, himself included, he still begrudgingly gives in to her requests.

Biography:
Kyomu was born into the Mukuro Clan, a lesser noble clan amongst those within the Seireitei. They were the darkness of the Seireitei, the shadow that lurked within the shadows of the Onmitsukidō, their deeds and misdeeds spoken only in passing whispers. It is because their less than reputable acts and missions that they trained the way they did, an environment not suitable for things such as love or friendship.

Kyomu spent his entire childhood training, studying and being subjected to many forms of agonizing torture. He practiced until sweat poured from his body like blood, studied until his vision blurred, he was starved just shy of death, he was whipped, beaten, poison, suffocated, day in and day out. There were no acts of love, no soft or gentle touches, no soothing words and certainly no time for laughter or games, there was only duty. To call it a living hell was still being lenient in describing such an environment, especially for such a young child...but it was all he knew.

The Shihōin clan had already shamed the role through the careless and whimsical acts of their previous head all those centuries ago, while the Fēng clan’s head was brash and still tied by her obsession to her previous lord, ruled by her emotions. The Mukuro Clan made it their mission to create one suitable to head the Stealth Corps. To that end they located five of the most promising children who were born through the clan’s selective breeding process. The children once born were removed from their parents, some willingly surrendering their infant as their duty to the clan, others less than willing, though their protests did nothing to protect the family that would never be.

Kyomu was one of the five children taken and placed into the program, they would eat together, sleep together, and train together. The moment the children began even attempting to stand on their own two feet, a blade was placed in their hands, their training would begin. Kyomu like the other children was guided on how to swing the sword, they were so young, so foolish, so ignorant. As little more than babes they thought it as nothing more than a mere game, and treated it as such. Ten times, fifty times, a hundred times, a thousand times. Over and over they swung the sword, the number of times they repeated this daily ritual growing alongside them. The blade was them, and they the blade, one indistinguishable from the other. Should any of them drop their blade during training, the dominant hand was crushed, the bones broken as they were forced to continue swinging with the remaining hand, doubling the number of swings required. At the end of the day, after all the pain and torture they were tossed into the scalding regenerative waters of the hotspring, closing up wounds, mending bone, and restoring stamina and vigor. They were broken, repaired, and broken again in an inescapable cycle.

The children were not permitted to speak to one another, nor were they allowed to offer each other any form of aid or assistance, though they knew this rule they could not abide by it. They were young, with no contact with the outside world or children their own age who else could they turn to? Who else could understand their pain, their suffering? They secretly formed a bond, consoling and encouraging one another. It was the only solace they had in the pit of darkness they were drowned in.

Several years had passed, Kyomu had become exceptionally close to two of the five children, a young girl named Ayane and a boy called Hideki. Talking with them, laughing with them, it was some of the best times he ever had growing up. Somehow or another Kyomu had become the de facto leader of their little triumvirate, Ayane declaring he was the boldest and the strongest out of them, despite her excellence in Hakuda and Hideki’s superiority in Kidō. Though he’d never admit it, he had developed a crush on Ayane. How could he not? She was cute, sweet, and always seemed to see the good in everything despite the hardships they were put through. If it meant seeing that smile, if it meant protecting her he’d be strong, even if he had to fake it, he’d never allow her to see him weak.

The clan’s first elder arrived on the eve of their birthday. He gazed over at the children, he said nothing as he scrutinized each one, by then they had gone from five to four, one having simply disappeared. They didn’t ask where he went, they dared not ask. Stepping aside the elder made way as a cart was rolled in covered in a heavy sheet. He turned his back to the children and placed his hand atop the cart, snatching the veil away to reveal an assortment of small animals, a puppy, a kitten, a bunny and a bird. They were each ordered to select one, it would from that point forward become their partner. They were to raise it, to feed it and care for it as they would themselves. The children hesitated before each making their selection, Kyomu chose the puppy, Ayane the Bunny, Hideki the bird and the last boy chose the kitten. Once their selection was made the elder left the children once more, ordering them to prepare for today’s training after settling the animals.

That day’s training seemed harsher than any other, but as always they suffered and endured. Returning to their quarters Kyomu collapsed, tired and drained despite the powers of the hotspring. As he lay there, he felt a warm tongue against his face, opening his eyes he stared at the little pup he had selected and smiled. ”Shinkiro..your name is Shinkiro.” He muttered before slipping into his slumber. Weeks passed into months as the children trained themselves, returning to the comforts of their pets. Kyomu, Ayane and Hideki would secretly slip away with their pets running and frolicking about. Slipping in and out swiftly and quietly was the only practical use they ever saw for all the training they were enduring.

After a year had passed the First Elder called for the children once more, bringing them into the courtyard, they were ordered to bring their pets along. Once all had arrived he scrutinized them just as he always did, looking from owner to pet. ”Very good.” He told them. ”You’ve raised them well, I can see the bond between you.” They stood straighter, smiling inside brimming with pride. ”Now, kill it. Each of you are to snap that animal’s neck.” The children stared, lost in the words spoken to them. Kyomu stared down at Shinkiro just as the others stared at their own pets, horror in their eyes. ”Hurry, kill them within the next five seconds...or forfeit your own lives.” He could hardly comprehend what was happening, there was a tightness in his chest, he could hardly draw breath. Shinkiro barked up at him, nudging him with its nose out of concern, wagging its tail.

A second passed, his body trembled. Another second eyes watered, his vision blurred, the third second passed and stiff hands were raised and before the fourth second could pass he grabbed Shinkiro and as ordered killed the tiny animal. Though he did not see it, he could hear it, the simultaneous sound of bones snapping, and bodies collapsing. He bit down on his lip until it bled, suppressing the cry that clawed at his throat. ”Well done.” The elder spoke, ”You all are weapons. You have no need for love, no need for attachments or things like petty sentiment.” With that he left the children standing, the bodies of the animals lying lifelessly at their feet.

They never spoke, not to one another, not even in solitude, for weeks they remained devoid of voice. Even the light in Ayane’s eyes had grown faint, dimming in splendor. After a month or so the trio returned to their games and antics, as if seeking to put that horrid day behind them. They had all grown noticeably stronger, faster, they were certainly a match for seated Shinigami. To graduate from their program before being officially dispatched to the Stealth Force for further specialized training they were tasked with passing a particular trial. Abandoned out into the world, secretly doused with something akin to Hollow Bait. The trial had a period of three months, Kyomu was the first to finish...completing his in just under a month’s time.

He waited, but no one else ever came. A second month passed and still the others had not returned. The Elder approached young Kyomu at the peak of his concern. ”Kyomu, prepare to dispatch immediately. The individuals known as Ayane and Hideki are in grave danger. They’ve been swallowed whole by a Hollow.” Before the elder could continue Kyomu had sprung up, grabbing his blade he faded from the Elder’s sight, slipping well beyond the man’s field of perception. He clenched his teeth, begging them to hold on. He knew the general area they should be at, after all, their locations were disclosed to them prior to transport. Faster, he ran covering several miles repeatedly with a single step before finally he located it.

The hollow was massive in size, resembling a Koi Fish in shape. Eyes sharpened like blades he thrust himself into battle against the hollow. Despite the Hollow’s tricks it was a short lived confrontation, the boy successfully killing it, retrieving his friends from the creature’s gut. Bruised and fatigued, but none worse for wear they hugged one another, grateful to be alive, grateful for Kyomu who saved them. Before they could relish in this brief moment of reprieve the three found themselves surrounded by members of the clan. Bodies parted as they made way for a single man, the First Elder. With arms poised behind him he gazed down at the three children with cold eyes, turning his focus to Kyomu. ”Kyomu, I believe we told you all this before. A weapon has no need for something as foolish as sentiment.” His words chilled him to the bone, a shiver dancing up his spine. ”When you heard they were defeated that should have been the end of it, you should have left them to their fate. But, due to some misplaced sense of friendship you rushed over without hesitation, defeating an opponent that was theirs to defeat.” The Elder approached them, his reiatsu pouring out from him, suffocating them, crushing them beneath its pressure. ”Did you think we were unaware of the friendship between you three? Did you think us ignorant everytime the three of you snuck off somewhere?”

Beads of sweat trickled down their bodies, they could hear their bones creaking beneath the weight of the elder’s spiritual pressure, and for the first time...they were truly afraid. They were careless, no..not just careless, stupid. It was foolish of them to believe that they had completely evaded detection, they were being watched the whole time. ”Koymu Mukuro, kill those two.” Though still buried beneath the Elder’s reiatsu he still raised his head. ”We have no need for those who cannot even protect themselves. You will kill Ayane and Hideki, for the crime of being so weak that they needed you to come rescue them.”

The world around Kyomu shattered as if made of glass, the fragmented pieces submerging into the darkness that consumed his mind. ”That is an order Kyomu, kill them or all three of you shall die together.” The words echoed within the cavern of his mind, his head slowly turning to gaze at his friends. Tears poured from his eyes, just as it poured from theirs. They were terrified, they didn’t want to die just as much as Kyomu did not wish for them to, least of all being the instrument of their deaths. Regardless of his choice they would die, if he did nothing he would die with them, if he agreed they would die by his hands. Every path led to their end. He rose to his feet, and picked up his blade, every act felt foreign to him, as if it were someone else moving his body. He watched in horror, but could do nothing to avert his gaze. With tears in his eyes he drew his blade, slashing them across the throat, returning the blade to its sheath all in one swift motion. It was a merciful death, but their eyes remained opened in horror, in fear and in pain. ”Well done.” The elder praised him, motioning for the others to disperse as he too turned to leave. Kyomu remained their before their corpses, the tears never ceasing as he clung to his blade. He came to an understanding after that day, they died because he chose friendship over his duty. He vowed to never again abandon his responsibilities, killing off his heart.

He would eventually come to join the Second Squad, securing a place as its Fifth seated member. Shortly after he had his run in with the Vice Captain at that time, Honoka Oki who introduced him to sweets. He would quickly work his way up to the position of Third Seat, a position he maintained up to the events that led to the disappearance and loss of many of the Seireitei’s Captains and seated members. Due to his abilities he would come to be promoted to the Captain of the Second Division, while also inheriting the role of Commander of the Stealth Force and Executive Militia.

Notable Features:
Buddha neck tattoo, scarring on forearms from training accidents.
Personality:
Bittersweet.png

Though soft spoken, her words are usually kind and gentle. However she has been known to cause trouble here and there and prank others as well as tease them when the situation permits. Hardly ever seen without a small smile on her face. Most of her free time is spent honing her skills. Enjoying the soft sounds of her instruments she plays them as often as possible. She reads when able, doing her best to learn the history from before she lived and keep up with events from after her death. Though she works best alone most commonly, she would never complain to have a companion on any mission. Helpful by nature she is hard pressed to deny any person a request that is within her abilities. She is also very determined, however, and unwilling to allow herself to feel or appear weak. More than any hobby, training is her biggest passion, particularly hand-to-hand combat. In these moments she will take on a fierce demeanor, though this behavior never lasts outside of training. As she was in life, she is extremely obedient, never questioning any orders given to her by those of a higher status and completing them as quickly and best she can. She can have a curious nature, however, and without orders and while in new locations she is prone to explore her surroundings.
Relatives:
Has so far been unable to find either of her parents or elder sister within Soul Society.

Reiryoku Level:
Average Spiritual Power
Due to her young age, Kazumi has not yet tapped in to her full potential in this field, her current level of power as unassuming as her small stature is. In life, Kazumi swore she could see the souls of the departed. She was a very spiritual person, finding the concept of the afterlife interesting. Living in the country her parents felt her interest in the spiritual was taboo and would invite demons and evil spirits into their home. With this ideal, however, she stopped all studying of the subject. In death and during Academy she began to understand what was Reiryoku was and its potential. Extremely excited to learn, she was able to control herself well enough to reach an average and basic understanding and usage of it, though she still has much to learn. If she were to concentrate she could obtain higher levels than her usual, though she is unable to keep this up when attempting to actually use her spiritual pressure. Her current strength is enough to allow her the few spells she knows as well as granting her more power for herself and her attacks.

Sensing Reiryoku:
Expert
Webp.net-resizeimage.png

The ability to sense other beings based simply on their pressure was automatically a fascinating subject for Kazumi. With her intent on joining Division Two she also found this skill to be absolutely essential, an aid to find targets and the ability to not allow herself to be surprised aside from a very well cloaked Reiryoku of someone beyond her abilities. This level of mastery also needed to be realized to allow her to sense the precise amount of power being used during a Kidō spell to allow her to return with the exact same force in order to negate it. She can discern the difference between specific souls and get a general gauge of their ability and their pressure. Despite her heightened perception, her drawback in this area is her focus upon sensing those around her. Well above the level necessary needed for her ranking, she does not find a need to be in a constant state of awareness of those around her and grows tired of doing so, only pushing herself to her potential when on a mission, while in unfamiliar territory or when required to discover the flow of power from an enemy to match their power and strike with exact timing. She must be intrigued or suspicious to be at her full capability.
Reiryoku Control:
Great Control
Control.png

Kazumi's control is Great only having achieved her current level thus far to aid her with her Kidō techniques, which she sees as essential. Her main focus is the proper execution of and duration of Kidō. During her time in Second she trained almost exclusively in bettering her ability to control so that she may better her Shunpo as well. This led to a great increase in her ability, though as of yet she has not been able to better her Shunpo.

Reiatsu:
Illustration1286.png

Specialist
Though still attempting to enhance her abilities in this area and understand Reiatsu and Reiryoku better, for now Kazumi has reached a level of ability that allows her to hold her own. While practicing exerting her reiatsu, she is currently unable to do much to others aside from those of equal standing or lower levels as well as low level hollow. She is able to exert a release of pressure equal to that of a katana's swing, causing minimal damage, though she cannot sustain this pressure.

Zanjutsu Level:
Swordsman
KazHalf.png

Kazumi spent years working on her swordsmanship, starting a few years after her arrival in Soul Society. It had begun with her early years of learning from many different people of various degrees in proficiency and style. During her time in Academy she was also taught, adding yet another method. Despite all of her training, due to the ragtag nature of it and the many jumps between so many varieties, she often finds herself subconsciously changing her stance. While in training or sparring she will sometimes switch her stance without a thought, creating an opening in her defense or making her lose the precious seconds necessary to strike. The only plus is that she has come to recognize the traits of many different styles, allowing her the ability to anticipate how her opponent will move and attack. She can be quite proficient if she focuses solely on her swordsmanship, though she is easily distracted in any fight or spar that it not solely sword against sword. With her small size and high agility she is prone to use techniques that utilize her speed and that can be used easily regardless of stance. Her size also works against her favor, as no matter how much she trains her small stature can only gain so much strength and she has so far been incapable of taking down an opponent with a single strike aside from low level hollows.
Known Techniques: Hōzuri , Shitonegaeshi

Hohō Level:
Shunpo Expert
KazShunpo2Vs2.png

With her small size and agility, she had been taught early in Academy how useful Shunpo could be for her in combat. During her years training at Academy she continued to concentrate on this ability. Though she had finally reached a certain level of proficiency at it, her ability was still fairly low after graduating and joining Second Division. Captain Mukuro gave her the aid of another member who, in her free time, who join her in training. The importance of bettering herself in this area drove her bettering herself, though she had not reached a higher level until she had already been removed from the Division. Her determination had not wavered and she continued with her training, ultimately reaching a more desirable level as well as a useful ability. Though still not the fastest she is able to keep up with ease and travel longer distances than before without issue. It proved to be quite useful in hand to hand combat as well, a more favored fighting style by Kazumi. The small woman cannot throw the strongest punch, however she is capable of throwing three times as many in the same amount of time she was only able to release one before.

Known Techniques: Utsusemi

Hakuda Level:
Expert Hakuda Combatant
Hakuda.png

Similar to her Zanjutsu training, Kazumi was trained in various style of Hakuda. However, unlike the before mentioned technique, learning a large array of hand-to-hand combat styles boosted her ability immensely. Using her agility and small size, she found it easy to escape what was most usually larger opponents than herself, able to wrench from their grip and move about them so fast one thought a monkey was climbing on them. With opponents smaller or of a similar stature she had been taught multiple ways to escape practically any hold. She found a passion for this type of combat and trains in it as often as she can. Though her strength itself leaves much to be desired, locking opponents in holds requires little brawn and plays well into her abilities. Although she cannot kick or punch very hard, her small body becomes a flashing fury of constant movement, relentlessly attacking until she can create or find an opening in the other's stance which she will prey upon mercilessly. In life she had also learned basic medical care as her family often found themselves wounded while tending the fields, giving her knowledge of the human body and its many weak points and target areas. As Jiu Jitsu became her favorite hand-to-hand style due to it being so useful despite any size or weight differences between Kazumi and her opponent, she trained in this style the most out of any other. During Academy she received training and after years of working with her master she finally obtained black belt status.
Known Techniques: Taketonbo , Takigoi , Sandbag Beat

Kidō Skill Level:
Kidō Specialist
kazreachvs2.png

Although the study of itself was quite boring, leaving Kazumi below the level she had aimed for, a few specific spells piqued her interest and allowed her to become somewhat adept at Kidō. Due to the areas she actually cared to research and work on along with her fighting style she practiced hard to master a basic level of three spells to aid and defend herself when caught in a pinch during a fight. She learned of three spells that she found most important and appealing for her personally, one to create distance, one to protect her and the last to cancel out the other's spell if she had no other option. Because the subject itself is still somewhat boring to her and requires attention she usually does not initially have in a fight, her full potential in this area is not fully realized until she has shaken off her boredom and becomes more engaged.
With her knowledge of healing, Kazumi worked with advanced Kidō instructors to create her own personal and basic Kidō technique based on what she knew of Kidō healing and being privy of wound care in life. Although she had attempted to learn a Kidō healing spell she had failed but with the help of masters she was able to create her own basic spell. This spell is used to quickly treat wounds, but only at a basic level which aids with somewhat deep wounds and overall body healing. Overall body healing can only be used for minor wounds that cover the entire person. This spell is useless for internal and extremely severe injuries, including internal bleeding and broken bones as well as any type of disease or poisoning.
Known Spells: Byakurai , Enkōsen , Hanki , Basic Wound Healing

Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency in Poisons
While studying various poisonous and venomous substances to learn how to counteract them, Kazumi made connections between poisons and was soon able to create her own. A useful skill to have during quick or discreet assassinations as well as to coat her weapons with. Kazumi is working toward mastery of the subject, gaining knowledge of new brews and mixtures as well as creating new and different effects. Her favorite is one that paralyzes muscles, targeting the heart specifically, which she has the greatest prowess in making thus far.
Proficiency with Hidden Weapons
Kazumi has an every growing expertise where hidden and throwing weapons are involved. They are used often and are a staple of her arsenal. From being able to launch long range attacks, administer poison from large distances, lead opponents to where she wants them to go, and even having an ability like it in her shikai, her aptitude with these small weapons grows every day. Target practice has become a part of her daily routine, using needles, shuriken and throwing knives. She has also begun more advanced target practice with her Projectile Launcher, hoping to better her aim with moving targets.
Medic
With her knowledge of human anatomy, wound care, her personal Kidō healing spell and her array of medicinal herbs, Kazumi is a more than capable of providing potentially life saving care to comrades while out in the field. While still researching in the medical field, this subject is on the back burner and therefor her ability with medicine is still limited to basic care. Most unlikely able to save someone from the very brink of death, she can aid with slowing the progression of poisons, ease the pain of wounds and broken bones, and with enough time, treat severe wounds and close them. These are all temporary measure meant only to allow the patient to survive until they are able to reach a qualified medical Shinigami. This is also useful on solo missions, in the event of injury to herself. Kazumi is capable of keeping herself alive through her medical treatment as long as the damage is not too serious, and with wounds treated and pain eased she is able to complete this mission if it has not yet been done.

Using her knowledge from life, Kazumi always carries with her her own personal collection of various remedies as well as basic first aid items such as bandages and wraps. Despite these being much more useful than her Kidō, it takes longer to access and administer the medication or treatment and therefor is best used while not in battle. These medicines can speed the recovery and ease the pain of broken bones and severe injuries. None of her medicines can negate poison, however, they can slow the poison's spreading and its effects down considerably, giving them more time for proper treatment. Along with her ability to concoct various brews to heal and treat wounds, is Kazumi's ability to mix and concoct her own special blend of a liquid poison, created while studying to learn proper ways to negate various types of poisons. Finding it useful with her skill level to have an aid for discreet assassinations, she uses this slipped into a drink or distributes a light coating on her throwing knives. The poison causes almost instant paralysis and targets the heart muscles specifically, ceasing its ability to function which results in death within minutes.

Throwing Knives
Helpful in long distance kills, close quarters fights and making an opponent move away or to lead them in a specific direction, Kazumi carries throwing knives with her at all times in a holster on her upper right thigh.

Projectile Launcher
Worn around the wrist and forearm, this handy piece of hardware can launch one or multiple of either arrows or needles. Usually worn when she is aware she will be heading into a fight or could potentially fight. Though it appears unassuming or strange it can release its projectiles to force her attacker away. During assassinations she commonly wears a haori or something of that nature to cover the device, or hides in the shadows to discreetly fire it. The projectiles fired from this weapon are coated in her personally created poison. If able to stop and take aim, she is a near perfect shot. This accuracy dwindles if her target is moving around frequently or quickly, usually requiring her to release a barrage instead of a single object.

Zanpakuto Spirit:
ZanSpirit.png

Yoru Onkyō is mischievous, always launching sneak attacks on Kazumi as well as taunting her for her poor swordsmanship or anything else he can think of where Kazumi is lacking. Though irritating, the spirit tries his best to aid Kazumi in bettering herself, though he only truly knows how through fairly scornful methods.
A young man with long black hair, Yoru Onkyō will play hide and seek in his ever changing world, the sound of his soft flute playing being Kazumi's only clue. If not found in time, or as a general admonition, he will strike Kazumi atop the head with his flute before meandering away.
Inner World:

Following a roughly paved stone path into the mountains one will find a massive shrine. Inside the shrine is fairly dark, the rooms constantly changing and moving around. It is in Kazumi's nature to explore, this Inner World being perfect for this as it is always modifying itself. From the shrine's innards to the hills and mountains beyond, one will never know what they may find or where they may wind up. Though beautiful and serene, the world itself seems to always be on the verge on dusk, the skies darkened yet peaceful. A light mist permeates the world, covering the grounds and even invading the lowest level of the shrine. The world is nearly without sound, empty of the call of birds or any other animals. Only the soft playing of a flute somewhere off in the distance can be heard.

Shikai:
Shikai Special Ability:

In Shikai form, her sword morphs into a simple looking koto. In her left hand she holds a black bachi, or pick, which has a bladed edge that can be used to attack an enemy should they come too close. Steel finger picks adorn her right hand that can also play the instrument or strike down a foe. As the standard, her koto holds thirteen steel strings. If the situation becomes dire she can removed these strings to be used as weapons on their own, or a few can be held tightly and plucked in a more 'travel friendly' way if she has to move quickly.

Sōsa
操縦-Lit. "Manipulation"
Yoru Onkyō's ability focuses on the utilization of sounds and vibrations. An array of effects can be produced depending upon the volume, pitch or speed of Kazumi's playing.
The most simple of her shikai's abilities employs high pitched notes to create a massive shock wave, demolishing her surroundings.
Depending on the notes played as well as the frequency, Kazumi can construct a variety of 'items'. Playing a low, deep tone will create a temporary sound barrier, protecting her from attacks. It will repel a hand, sword or projectile if touched, and if ran into by an assailant it will thrust them away. This is only effective depending on the enemy's reiatsu strength.
Higher pitched notes played in quick sequence will create multiple nearly invisible projectiles. Though she can create a variety of weapons such as shuriken, needles and even simple spears, her most preferred weapon are kunai. Looking directly at the projectiles one would see something of a shimmer. From the side a thin, hazy grey colored outline can be seen while the 'inside' appears more like distorted air. Due to the nature of their creation, the further the sound travels the weaker the projectiles become, disappearing into nothing once it travels to far. Though this is ineffective at long ranges, the closer an opponent is the more dense the projectile is and the more damage is it capable of doing.
The most versatile aspect is the assault of one's senses. The pitch and octave creates different effects, such as a high pitched tone to disorient the enemy. While in close range to her and the sound, the effects are stronger, and weaken at a distance. The opponent will experience vertigo as well as difficulty with their sight and vision. Faster playing is extremely disorienting, paralysis imminent at close range. Again, this wears off with distance. These sounds can also be thrown, distracting the adversary and, if she is not within their line of sight, creating the illusion she is elsewhere.

Biography:

In life, Kazumi lived with her parents and elder sister. Their lives were of simple farmers and she was content with her lot in life. During her sixteenth year, however, her elder sister Kaori caught the eye of a young man wandering by who came from a prominent family. He promised her family to give them a life of comfort, one where they would never have to toil in their own fields again, if only he could have Kaori's hand. Overjoyed her parents agreed, and flattered by the handsome man and his attentions toward her, Kaori went along with the arrangement as well. Within the year the family was provided with all they had been sworn. Carpenters arrived the day after Kaori's wedding and soon had built the three remaining family members a new home. Though it was nothing particularly magnificent, it put their old hovel to shame. Along with the builders came the workers who began to take over the family's work in their fields and took up residence in their previous home which the new now overlooked.

Kazumi found it strange to have others work for her and offered help, though they desperately denied all her offerings. Her mother took to her new life as if she had become a queen, and in hopes of gaining further wealth and status began demanding Kaori's husband send tutors. They received many and Kazumi was taught the ways of being a proper lady, including the arts such as the koto and shamisen. These subjects she enjoyed the most. She soon became well educated and her demeanor could not be discerned from that of a high born lady which gathered her many suitors. Displeased with their offers as they seemed a pittance in comparison to all that had been provided from Kaori's marriage her mother rejected them all. This suited Kazumi fine as she felt nothing to these strangers that would appear at her door.

In her twentieth year, after five years of hearing nothing from Kaori, her family was summoned to her and her husband's home. Upon their arrival they found that their invitation was not for a visit but for her sister's funeral. Hideo was full of sorrow at the passing of his wife, woefully telling the family of an illness that slowly consumed her before taking her on the third year. Stricken with grief, her father wanted to look upon his first born daughter's face just once more, however she had already been cremated. Two weeks passed inside of Hideo's home, always a reason they needed not leave just yet. When her father insisted it was time for them to return, Hideo finally confessed to his stalling: he now wished for Kazumi's hand. In return, their family would receive an even grander home inside of the city and would want for nothing. Despite her father's protests, her mother urged the marriage along and within the month the two were man and wife.

It took one year before Kazumi learned of her sister's true cause of death: her cruel husband. Behind closed doors the man became a monster, beating her nearly daily for the most senseless of reasons. Behaving as the lady she had been taught to act like, she gave no protest and took his abuse in silence. However, on her twenty-fourth year, in a drunken rage, Hideo beat her so severely that within the week she succumbed to her injuries and passed.

One would suppose she would hold a grudge but her family now prospered and had birthed their first son. With this knowledge, she moved along in peace.

Within Soul Society it did not take her long to learn of the Academy. Though she had no abilities that would be useful, she survived her time outside by playing music for food and eventually training. Once she felt confident in her abilities in combat, she pursued the Academy and to her surprise was accepted. She worked just as hard every day, pushing herself each day to become better and stronger. She gained confidence in herself as she improved, and upon her graduation looked forward to a new life.
