Kaisou Tsunoda (改装角田) is the 3rd Seated Officer of the Fourth Division (四番隊, yonbantai; "Squad 4") in the Gotei 13. Spending time in no other divisions prior to being inducted into Yonbantai, Kaisou’s entire Shinigami career has contributed to his skill as a field and combat medic. The talented young officer has spent a century or more improving in all ways possible to create the beautiful work of art that is his repertoire. Just recently ascending to his seated position, he was taken under the tutelage of Soul Society’s greatest medical mind, Yū Nakamoto.

From outside of the Fourth Division barracks, you can hear the screams and whispers of adorning fans. Women of all shapes, sizes, and colors gather to simply peer through the gates at Kaisou; they speculate what further beauty lies beneath his surgical mask while imagining a life where he is theirs, and theirs alone. The somewhat tall male is most immediately noticeable by his thick locks of iron-blue hair. Loose strands dance along a smooth and silky face lightly dusted in blush, often blown aside by a wayward wind or swept behind perfectly-proportioned ears. The full length of his hair is rarely revealed, fashioned and tied in a thick purple band to keep it out of his way when operating. Beneath his flowing bangs, frozen blue orbs are said to peer directly into one’s heart, the coldest swells of the ocean hiding behind his eyelids. Known to have an unmistakable smile, it is a rarity for Kaisou to be seen with an expression that is any form of somber in nature. The substitution of his hakama for a pair of Harem pants gives him the mobility needed for long days in the hospital or the field, whilst the dark indigo Gi and pink Obi Sash give him the splash of color he desperately needs atop the boring, ugly standard uniform.

Irrefutably vain, cruel; selfish beyond measure. This alone is an image of Kaisou that has been exaggerated and extrapolated, taken from small interactions he has had with strangers and the assumptions of those that have not had the liberty of knowing him personally. Even still, there is truth to all rumors. Kaisou is obsessed with himself; every grain of hair, every spotless ivory tooth. He spends countless hours, days, tending to himself and ensuring that everything about his person is the embodiment of perfection. This includes rigorous workout routines, utilizing a conglomerate of chemicals and products on his face and skin; And the most absolutely imperative part of his day, using Kurotsuchi Sheen. Even when noticing small side effects from the product(s), he is capable of using his own healing expertise to revert any drastic changes. Even still, he deems it a worthy price to pay for the results he receives. An hourly meeting with a mirror is a necessity to secure the success of his daily routine; every single thing must be up to par, worthy of being gawked over. Few can contest his arrogance; often because it is not one of sword or soul, but simply one of self. If someone didn’t know any better, they’d assume he was some type of royalty purely based on the way he carries himself.

It is for every one of these reasons that the man is assumed to be selfish. Those who label him as such, quite obviously ignore his profession. A man responsible for indiscriminately saving countless lives, Kaisou is an empathetic individual with the drive to help clean up any of Soul Society’s messes. He sacrifices his time, at times his sanity, and if need be, his life; as long as it meant the guaranteed recovery and safety of his patient. He feels as though the Fourth Division is where he is meant to be, and the medics there have his respect above all of the other buffoons that wave around their swords all day. The challenges they face and the grueling atmosphere they endure day by day, is a testament to their strength and duty to the Gotei 13. There is a bond, an unmistakable unity, the medical corps are like a family that he has never had.

Others have barked at him for being cruel. Well, that’s not entirely fair. Kaisou is selectively cruel. When off-duty, he is perhaps the most exclusive individual one could know. If one does not meet his standards of beauty, they couldn’t hope to be seen as worthy to share air with him. Kaisou had a flair for the dramatic, and wouldn’t hesitate to make a scene if forced to share space with someone ugly, grotesque, or just beneath his standards as a whole. This is an advanced application of his overbearing obsessive-compulsive disorder. Kaisou takes being a neat freak to levels unbound. Every little thing has to be in order, scrubbed clean, and rendered spotless or he can not confidently live in peace. After operating or treating a patient, Kaisou can not proceed with the next patient until his station is completely sanitized. Luckily, this task is made easy by using his Zanpakuto practically. This cleanse does not stop at pools of blood and specs of dirt, or even having things each slotted into their individual organizing containers; no–this applies also to the company that is kept, the quality of individuals aesthetically that he surrounds himself with. When that balance and preference is disturbed, the blue-haired male can act.. Uncharacteristically. This alone has led to the different views and opinions on the man widely spread throughout the Seiretei. If one has to wonder how Kaisou will eventually treat them, they need only to look in the mirror.

Furthermore, Kaisou’s ability to completely entrance the women of the Seireitei and even the furthest reaches of the Rukongai is no secret. In fact, it has since become the source of his fame. His reputation proceeds him, giving him the nickname of “Koibito-Kun” (恋人, VIZ. “Lover Boy”). Although he is known as a player of sorts, simply due to the number of women he has had small, short-lived entanglements with, he is in fact the perfect gentleman. He is extremely romantic, and charming, as if straight out of a storybook or romance novel. He is capable of committing spontaneous acts that will swoon or pull a smile out of even the sternest and uptight women. Even if he has no romantic interest in a woman, he remains a prolific flirter and will do his damndest to tint his target’s cheeks rose-colored. It is a personal boost to his ego and carries no significance whatsoever. More often than not, he has zero serious implications connected to his words that are often given off in a poetic, Shakespearean cadence. He is not against spewing empty promises or false compliments just to say he made a woman’s day; correction–a beautiful woman’s day.

Kaisou’s pool of reiryoku is considerably large in comparison to his peers, especially taking into account his time before elevating to 3rd Seated Officer. Perhaps it was a tradeoff, a godsend when considering the large amounts of reiryoku needed to truly exploit his zanpakuto to make use of its fullest potential. He is capable of–and often required to–utilize large amounts of reiryoku to perform his duties in the field with maximum efficiency; healing crowds of individuals in a single breath. While for most this would be taxing, exhausting, or outright debilitating, it has become near-second nature for the Combat Medic. Not unlike many others, it was the well of power within him that initiated the poaching of the young male by the Shinōreijutsuin (真央霊術院, Spiritual Arts Academy). While his reservoir of power is considerable and was the catalyst to his induction into the Shin'ō Academy, it was his degree of control that carried him to success, eventual graduation, and even promotion. Honing his control came naturally—at first—and soon transformed into a consistent practice. Learning and understanding his reiryoku and the paths it took through his body, was only further supplemented by studying the anatomy of the soul during his medical training.

All of these efficiencies tie in to a single, prominent skill being honed to perfection; his ability to utilize healing, offensive, and binding kido effortlessly, and in quick succession. His mastered control over his reiryoku is a supplement to its size when compared to those who may have more reiryoku than himself. Capable of “rationing” portions of his reiryoku quite easily, he can compartmentalize and prepare his reiryoku for each individual attack, action, or spell that the medic has meticulously planned for.

As a Medical-Class Shinigami, the ability to notice, identify, and locate spiritual signatures of all kinds is a necessity for success. Most prominently, being able to accurately assess if one's spiritual signature is fading, or close to—is the most useful appropriation of this skill. While others’ Reikaku (霊覚, "Spiritual Sense") can be perceived as an interlinked combination of energies, both close and distant, Kaisou’s is prevalent in flashes of color. Although he cannot appropriately distinguish between different power levels and other innate abilities as easily as his peers, he can however determine how close a given spiritual signature is to death based on a designated color scale. The colors dance along the spectrum, individuals stained in green and blue possess the most current vitality, while those teetering along the purples pinks and reds are considered gravely injured or on their deathbed. Kaisou is no stranger to interacting with Reiraku (霊絡, “Spirit Coils”; "Spirit Ribbons"), either, able to locate and identify their originator with touch, although he takes a bit more time to perform this act than others might.

Tearing the earth asunder, by root and stem, things his reiatsu—when properly released—is capable of doing with little to no effort exerted. However, after the initial burst of release, his spiritual pressure has been known to “relax”. It calms, moving idly around his body like a mix of wind and water, while Kaisou himself is the center of the storm. It is also completely silent, the sound of rippling energy becomes utterly muffled, indistinguishable. In its vibrant pale blue, it is almost blindingly bright, sparkling in any night sky. For those in danger, or perhaps in need of healing or immediate medical attention, it is but a ray of hope that help is near, and that they don’t need to worry. The simple force it carries acts as a barrier or coating used to render low-level kido and spells from inept casters useless. His masterful control over his reiryoku and his spiritual anatomy experience only further contribute to how capable he is of controlling the potency of which his Reiatsu is released. While he can release it, make it known, and cast his beacon widespread for all to see, he can just as easily contain and suppress it, becoming but a feather in the wind, unable to be identified or located by those without the adequate means of uncovering his suppressive veil.

Unlike many others, Kaisou can not permit his reiatsu to react against an opponent maliciously, or destructively. Even the natural embodiment of spiritual pressure which comes as an overbearing and–comparatively gravitational–force, is absent. Instead his reiatsu has been described as a day on the beach, the feeling of the water crashing against the sand as a shallow wave washes over your toes. It is serene, without being euphoric. It is like being wrapped in a cotton hug, in a bed of clouds, weightless and burdenless for those who feel its effects. Reminiscent of a cool breeze on a hot summer day, it is hardly ever noticed at all, though individuals with an acute sense will be able to separate its effects from the weather.

When choosing to formulate a shape with his Reiatsu, it has often started out as an amorphous blob, shapeless and baseless, until it truly manifests as a giant-jellyfish-like apparition. It encompasses Kaisou as a whole and remains close to his person as opposed to towering over him like other reiatsu appearances. At his feet, its tentacle-like protrusions dance in a delayed fashion, as if bound by the weight of water. While his reiatsu and of course its shape radiate an indistinguishable pale blue, streaks of cyan and violet can be seen upon closer inspection. His reiatsu as a whole looks and flows like a pool of iridescent, sparkling water.

Because of his Reiatsu’s appearance along with the manifestation of his zanpakuto, Kaisou was aptly dubbed, Kurage (海月, VIZ. “Jellyfish”).

While Kaisou takes pride in cleaning up messes of all kinds, when it comes to creating them he’d rather avoid that altogether. It is no secret that zanjutsu, even in its most precise form, is known to paint the battlefield red. Kaisou loathes this and takes all measures to ensure that his battles are fought and won as cleanly as possible. While he is in complete control of how he chooses to conquer his enemies, he knows that in any case, battle is unpredictable, and sometimes it simply cannot be helped. Though, just because he dislikes the art form, that does not eliminate his practice of it. In fact, when it comes to training or sparring, that is when Zanjutsu becomes a beautiful work of art, a dance of sorts, without the mess that comes from a real battle or fight to the death. Because of this, Kaisou is actually a formidable swordsman, despite his reluctance to show it. His movements are not as stoic and disciplined as some of the more accomplished swordsmen, but instead a combination of twists and turns, shifting his weight loosely whilst wielding his zanpakuto with one hand. While it is proven that wielding your weapon with both hands offers greater results, Kaisou much prefers the speed and unpredictability that his unique style offers. He may not have the precision or skill to easily bisect his foes, but it is much more within his nature to bombard his opponent with a storm of blinding, shallow cuts–should he choose to take that route.

The healers of the Fourth Division are often mistaken, undermined, and assumed to be inept in all things outside of their designation. While many other divisions act as patrols, scouts, glorified guards or bodyguards, The Fourth Division Medics are constantly at work, constantly putting the broken pieces back together. After graduating the Shin’o academy they are thrust into an additional training regiment, meant to ensure they can be relied on to save the lives of the countless shinigami that populate the Seireitei. Besides learning the standard healing techniques essential to performing their daily job functions, what’s most important is being able to cross vast distances to rush to people’s aid. Considering it takes a full ten days to traverse from one Seireitei gate to another, becoming as proficient as possible in hoho, and minimizing the steps between points ‘A’ and ‘B’ became a priority. After the Captain Commander’s executive order to increase the Fourth Division's presence in the World of the Living, this training regiment only increased in ferocity; they had to be sure that the medics deployed wouldn’t be considered dead weight, and could do their job efficiently, appropriately, and with haste.

Kaisou himself has always had quiet and calculated movements. As light as a feather, and as swift as the wind, he is capable of covering great distances with ease, and without tiring at that. Never losing focus or shifting his intention outside of getting to his destination, he has become a prolific practitioner of one of the many Zankensoki arts. As talented as he is, he has not been—at least yet—able to truly master the art and learn an assortment of techniques that comes along with said mastery.

Although he is in elite physical shape for his own conceited reasons, Kaisou is near-completely inept when it comes to the Art of White Hits. Hakuda at times can be the most savage of all the arts, and perhaps just as—if not even more–messy than Zanjutsu. The toughest of Hakuda combatants are capable of punching directly through their opponents, driving their fists through blood and innards. It only took seeing something similar a single time for Kaisou to offer his sentiment: “No Thanks.”— He wouldn’t dare partake in something as savage as this, and would much rather prefer to avoid a direct physical altercation altogether. If he is forced into a battle of martial arts, however, he is more likely to utilize a barrage of palm strikes. With an open palm, he feels as if he is limiting the possibility of mess, while also initiating a push-like motion to get distance between him and his assailant. Even still, because of his physical profile, these palm strikes have been said to carry a considerable amount of force, able to knock the wind out of most opponents with ease.

When it comes to Kidō, perhaps Kaisou’s vanity as well as his love and obsession for all things beautiful has finally worked in his favor. The man has slaved over a multitude of texts and information related to the Demon Arts, with the sole purpose of becoming capable enough to cast such beautiful spellwork himself. What started as an infatuation, grew into love. What began as studying, turned into effortless ingestion of information and incantations.

One could easily point out just how much of an oddity Kaisou is. Given his ability to utilize Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, Incantation Abandonment; Viz "Destruction Chant"), one would think that they would hardly ever hear an incantation from the man. Despite his ability to utilize most if not all of his spells without incantation, he often purposely elects to use the incantation for the sole reason of enjoying the poetic cadence of the words. The way they come together and form a Haiku of sorts, is a great precursor or opening act before he casts his beautiful spell. It is for this same reason, that these incantations make Kaisou like a chef in the kitchen—utilizing every single ingredient—it is not unlike Kaisou to also implement Nijū Eishō (二重詠唱, Twofold Incantation; Viz "Double Destruction Chant") into his arsenal. Through a combination of spells he can produce something even more visually stunning, capable of weaving a multitude of Kido spells together at once to assault his foes with. Most commonly, he would choose to subtly imbue a restraining spell with one of destruction, allowing him to make quick work of an enemy once they’ve been ensnared.

One of Captain Nakamoto’s quotes comes to mind when considering how often Kido is used as opposed to Kaisou’s actual weapon; "Kidō is the best way for me to get my hands dirty... without my actual hands getting dirty”. No one is in agreement more than he, who has put perhaps one-hundred times the amount of time into Kidō than the next Zankensoki art. His destructive spells create a work of art, beautiful cataclysms that only the earth itself can replicate. Whilst his restraining spells and others capture their targets in lights as bright as the stars in the night sky. His masterful control of his Reiryoku allows him to utilize a large number of spells before tiring, even in comparison to other masters. Many often discount the man’s intelligence due to his vanity when in truth Kaisou is an obsessive planner, and this is no different when it comes to the usage of his Kidō Spells. More often than not, he has already decided, calculated, and laid out an assortment of spells that will be useful given the current situation. As a result, he compartmentalizes and delegates reiryoku for each spell before they are even cast, masterfully using the Demon Arts constantly while in combat without taxing his spiritual reservoir.

His love for the art even led him to the forbidden fruit, in the form of beautiful spells that were not permitted to be used under the Seireitei’s laws. What’s more enticing than a rebel; a man that has teetered the line between that which is accepted and that which is frowned upon? Just the thought of a forbidden spell suddenly makes it more appealing, leading Kaisou down the rabbit hole of discovering what he could about a plethora of them. Additionally, Kidō is an outlet for his creativity, and he often takes inspiration from interesting individuals he encounters, as seen with his creation of many of his Kido spells, one specifically inspired by a friend, Tōsu Shohei.

Known Techniques: Kaisou knows nearly all spells, but will only admit to knowing as well as using the spells that he himself has considered “beautiful”. This is applicable for both Hadō and Bakudō alike.

Perhaps most importantly, as a member of The Fourth Division, and perhaps as one of the most profound medics in all of Soul Society, Kaisou’s love for Kido does not end when Kaidō (回道, Turn Way) enters the picture. Kaisou has captured what it is to be a true healer on the most profound spiritual levels, looking at every injured friend or ally as a puzzle to be put back together. He finds the most enjoyment in repairing lost limbs or dealing with severe burns. He is also capable of restoring multiple targets' reiryoku to levels that allow them to get back in the fight, while also mending any injury they may have sustained. While these things can also be done by, or with his Zanpakuto, he is often using all of his healing abilities in tandem, making him one of the most useful healers in all of Soul Society. While he has become so elite in the area of healing others, this has only further amplified his ability to heal himself. He is capable of utilizing Kaidō on himself seamlessly. When used in conjunction with his Zanpakuto the man becomes nigh-unkillable, capable of still fighting even if he is but a walking corpse. No matter if he is missing one, or multiple limbs he has been known to fight through it with the aid of his healing abilities with no trouble at all.

His same creativity for the creation of both Hadō and Bakudō alike also extends to his ability to create Kaidō spells, having manufactured one or Healing Kidō (治療用鬼道, chiryōyō kidō; Viz "Healing Spiritual Arts") of his own. When searching for a cure for his friend Tosu’s own Angō Seishinbyō (暗号精神病; “Crypto-Spirit Disease; Mysterious Spiritual Disease”), Kaisou’s medical prowess only increased with the amount of knowledge he was ingesting; searching under every rock for any possible cure, the man uncovered every secret there is to know of restoration. To his own disappointment–however–he did not find a cure for his friend, though continues to treat him regularly while he insists on maintaining the search.

Human Anatomy Studies
A requirement for all members of the Fourth Division; Shinigami must fully understand the anatomy and physiology of Shinigami, and seated members must as well understand the functions of humans and hollows alike as if they were their own.

Unnerving Arrogance
It is unknown where such arrogance was born, or for what reason Kaisou is so obsessed with himself. What is known, however, is how much it has been known to deter enemies. Both a gift and a curse, his arrogance allows him to be hard-headily confident in any and all situations. This allows him to perceive every enemy as beneath him, every attack or injury as recoverable or avoidable. He constantly feels as if he has a leg up on his opponents as if he is always two steps ahead. While this can frustrate some enemies who want to wear down his spirit and find it utterly impossible, this same arrogance has also been known to cause him to become overconfident and make a mistake.

Chiryōyō Kidō (治療用鬼道, 'Healing Kidō'; VIZ. "Healing Spiritual Arts")
These spells do not have known numbers or incantations to cast, and simply heal the target. As the user holds his/her hands above the patient's wounds, his/her palms glow with green spiritual energy to facilitate healing. When one heals with regular healing kidō, they perform Reiatsu restoration first. By doing so, one can attempt to recover the physical body using the patient's restored Reiatsu and the healer's external Reiatsu. Therefore, restoring the Reiatsu when the physical body is in a fully healed state is no trouble at all.

Shōreikōsō (奨励構想, 'Plan of Inspirational Encouragement' VIZ. Encouragement Plan) ––– A healing spell similar to Seimeikasseihō, however the amount of damage that is restored is also bestowed on the patient as a one-time shield to nullify damage equal to the sustained injury. Upon its initial cast, the spell memorizes the source of damage and further reinforces the afflicted area to prevent similar damage from occurring once more. This ensures an attack of equal force to be rendered ineffective and allows the target less downtime to recover and grants more time to plot a counterstrike. This spell expends more reiryoku and takes longer to cast, due to its increased effectiveness.

Gyakutai (虐待, 'Abjuration', VIZ. Shield Oath) ––– A healing spell that can also be classified as a supplementary spell. This spell uses the practitioner's reiryoku to create a Reiryoku Pact (霊力協定, Reiryokukyōtei) with a singular target. As a result, all damage that either party undergoes, is dispersed in half with the other party receiving the other portion of the damage. The reiryoku pact can only be ended by the original caster, and is often used when treatment is unable to be administered for the time being. However, this same concept also applies to any healing received as well, with the other party also receiving half the healing that is administered.

Jakago (蛇籠; ‘Cage filled with rocks’; VIZ. “Cage filled with stone”)
This bakudo spell creates a cage that changes in size depending on the target(s), Once inside the cage, larger or heavier opponents will find it to be an unbreakable seal, while those smaller in size will be able to treat the cage like a cardboard box. To something comparable in weight to that of a Gillian (最下大虚 (ギリアン), girian; "Lowest Great Hollow"), this barrier would equate to about twenty of Danku stacked against one another.

Kokonotsu Inu (九つ犬, 'Nine Dogs'; VIZ. "Nine Hounds")
Nine wooden pillars erect from the ground, each standing about twelve feet high and three feet wide to surround the given area in which the spell was cast’. Atop each pillar lies a singular, green flame flickering vibrantly in a circle around the caster. Seven of the dog-shaped pillars are said to represent the chakras, whilst the remaining two represent the physical body and soul. The Nine Dogs have been described as Kaisou as a “self-manufactured death sentence”, the ultimate sacrifice in exchange for limited immortality. While within the confines of the spell, each flame represents life itself; should the user be struck down, a flame will be extinguished and the caster will find themselves restored of their vitality. With the final flame acting as the final chance. The spell is primarily used as an avenue to buy as much time as possible, at the cost of one’s life. Considering, regardless of if the user is actually killed or not, the flames themselves will burn out in time as well, leaving them condemned to the fate of death the moment they choose to use the spell at all. Kaisou understands that should anyone know of this spell’s existence, it will undoubtedly be considered forbidden. However, he has no problem with this–knowing that if he were to use it, he won’t be alive to face the consequences of going against the laws.

Tsukimi (夜桜, 'Moon-Viewing'; VIZ. "Inner Reflection")
A technique created while active in the Kido Corps and now regarded as one of Yū's greatest achievements in the Kaidō field–which he inevitably taught Kaisou—Tsukimi allows the doctor to communicate and understand his patients' on a much more deeper level. Initially, this spell was invented with the intention of feeling the pain of his patients, allowing him to become an expert at diagnosing and treating them in a moment's notice. This later became useless once gained more in-depth knowledge of anatomy, now able to detect any anomalies in his patients with his eyes alone.

Now what came was a more psychological connection; This kidō technique allows the user to literally sense and experience a person's emotions and feelings through mere touch. The angel is capable of discovering and bearing the weight of even the deepest traumas, otherwise unknown to all, from just a few seconds of exposure. He has also shown the ability to manipulate emotions to a degree, using this to cheer up an otherwise sad individual or more likely, to efficiently calm an enraged Shinigami by influencing them to be less hostile. While the user is unable to control direct movement, they do have the power of manipulating consciousnesses, able to quickly sedate someone if needed to the point of being registered as comatose and has even shown the ability to delve into victims' memories-- and to a degree, able to erase them over time. Individuals with stronger willpower (typically, Captain level or above with a mastery in Kidō) are the hardest minds to invade as it requires constant physical contact with the target; Stronger subjects are also able to nullify this power partially, left to be in a half-conscious state at best. Conversely, the user can just as easily awake people from comas, however, this has shown to sometimes not be the best action as other body functions sometimes don't follow suit.

Company Relief Bag — A standard assistance kit that all shinigami of the fourth division possess, it is essentially an advanced first-aid kit stashed with medical supplies, pills, potions, homemade concoctions, antidotes, ointments, and herbs to treat a variety of injuries, afflictions and life-threatening illnesses.

V_huY9n0wx68m6L3EwvOhUSkqhclMP3_3OjddYeyFhoq-1Q_tCp4Or6LNWdUmre6MwC3z7wDoyUPkByST7_UHvCs6lQaarjydEIsqz5kFTaaFEZbhH-5-35_W6fU8HFgiGvHPYfb

Gigai (義骸, "Faux Body") — After Fourth Division was tasked with going to the World Of The Living frequently, Kaisou adapted to using his Gigai rather quickly. As opposed to a standard school uniform that comes with a blazer and pant–or for women, a blazer and skirt–Kaisou elects to instead use the appearance of a private school uniform. A thick navy blue sweater is buttoned fully over a white collared shirt. On his lower half are thin gray slacks, while he has a pair of soft loafers over his feet with no socks.

Denreishinki (伝令神機, Divine Messenger Machine; "Soul Pager") — While many are given Denreishinki when it is decided they will be consistently going on assignments to the Living World, Kaisou had his far before then. His intentions with the device were simply taking selfies, as well as posting on Flutter as frequently as possible. Occasionally he may choose to watch one of Captain Yugure’s videos but that is a rare occurrence. Kaisou’s model of the Denreishinki seems to be the newest of the new, perhaps the only one with a purple shell in the entirety of Soul Society. Kaisou is not often found without this device on his person.

Zanpakuto Appearance: En-You Souji takes shape as your standard Katana with a lotus-shaped tsuba, adorned and clamored in the most spotless of silvers. Its hilt is wrapped in a washed, indigo cloth bound tightly to the metal beneath it, offering an extremely capable grip. The blade itself carries a somewhat cobalt hue, kissed at its edge by gleaming white steel. The scabbard—which is often settled tightly within his pink obi sash—is an unmistakable amethyst. Its vibrant purple color separates it from most Zanpakuto, giving the weapon what Kaisou protests to be the most beautiful combination of colors.

Zanpakuto Spirit

En-You Souji is a spirit unlike any other. The eccentric old man does not don the normal whites and grays that often come with his apparent wisdom. Instead, his head of hair, his extremely long goatee, as well as free-flowing mustache and brows are all composed of a current of sparkling-blue water. The water itself looks magical to the touch, glowing with streaks of lavender, blue and cyan alike. With each parting of his lips a smile of grandeur reveals itself and all its glory. Each pearly white shines spotlessly, no flaw to be found in any detail of the man. He wears a large, dark coat that expands into a scalloped, bright silver collar. The dramatic coat seems to be extremely important to him, as it is not unlike him to get uncharacteristically upset if something were to happen to it; a rip, a tear, or even a single drop of blood or dirt will send En-You Souji into a frenzy about his attire.

Kaisou has often described his Zanpakuto spirit as one of, if not the most annoying being the world has to offer. The old man is obnoxious, constantly high-spirited, and seems to be obsessive in every form of the word. Ironically, the similarities between his Zanpakuto spirit and himself are all the things that Kaisou seems to hate the most. When interacting with his wielder, En-You Souji pretends to know absolutely everything. However, hidden beneath the facade of the all-knowing lies actual wisdom; small gems of knowledge that not only assist Kaisou in his daily life but also subtly enhance the bond between the two, untapping Kaisou’s potential to wield his zanpakuto effectively. En-You Souji has also shown an obsession with youth and has even, somehow, digested large amounts of pop culture to make up his mannerisms and vernacular. He is often caught using outdated, cringe-worthy slang while striking poses the common youth would simply dub as ‘lame’. Kaisou has made it painstakingly clear that if anyone else was to ever–hypothetically–step foot into his Inner world the embarrassment would be endless.

En-You Souji’s inner world is an extremely peaceful forest at the foot of a small mountain range. There is a multitude of waterfalls, clearings, flowerbeds, or thick fields of tall grass for one to galavant through should one choose to adventure and explore. At the edge of the forest is a beach, where waves crash against the sand, and the sound of sea birds can be heard without actually ever catching a glimpse of a single one. The world seems to always be in a state of thick humidity as if the rain has just passed or was about to occur at any moment. When the “rain” does begin, the water does not fall in its normal, small droplet form. Instead, a countless amount of bubbles fall from the sky; as the sunlight catches each of them it casts rainbow shadows across the entire landscape.

Shikai:
In its Shikai form, En-You Souji (遠洋掃除, "Deep-Sea Cleaning"; VIZ. “Deep-Sea Scrubbing”) abandons its tsuba. The normal katana blade thickens and expands, adopting a curvature similar to that of a Scimitar or Cutlass. The Kashira warps and changes, growing in size while its interior becomes hollowed out in the shape of a perfect circle. From that same circular ring bubbles seem to spawn endlessly, littering the battlefield–or operating room–with the product of his shikai. Closer inspection would reveal the transformation of some of these bubbles. Maintaining their size and even their translucency, the bubbles change to mimic jellyfish-like creatures of different shapes; each unique in their distinct makeups and patterns.

Shikai Special Ability: Shiobana Benikurage (紅海月塩花; "Immortal Jellyfish of Purifying Salt"; VIZ. "Salt-Water Jellyfish of Endless Cleansing") is the name of En-You Souji’s primary ability. This permits the Zanpakuto to create a near-endless amount of bubbles, varying in overall shape as they are spawned. Shortly after they are created, some of them transform their appearance into that of a Jellyfish-like creatures, floating ominously around Kaisou. These Jellyfish—not unlike the bubbles themselves—can appear in a plethora of sizes. Some have been seen on a minuscule scale, only the size of a common pond leech. While others have been created to mimic the size of a large man. Their size directly correlates to the efficiency of their usage as well as their function. As a result, spawning the larger Jellyfish consumes a much larger portion of Kaisou’s own Reiryoku.

The primary function and usage of the Zanpakuto is to employ the Jellyfish as “cleaners”. They are capable of scrubbing allies completely clean of all impurities; This includes poisons, toxins, illnesses, and any other affliction otherwise curable. While those specific ailments are internal, the Jellyfish are also capable of mending external wounds. Large flesh wounds are considered a simple task, while amputations and severances can be repaired with a bit more time; even before the procedure is completely finished, Kaisou is capable of mending the apparent pain that any individual may be experiencing, allowing them to be functional at a time where they would be otherwise debilitated. Those who have had their spiritual reserves emptied will find solace in being graced by En-You Souji, as Kaisou’s on reiryoku is extended to aid in replenishing theirs. When one has been completely replenished their very skin even becomes shiny. The sparkle and gleam like a freshly-waxed floor, spotless and free of any ailments.

Unbeknownst to most—excluding probably one singular male—The bubbles as well as the jellyfish they become are capable of more than just cleansing allies of their impurities and injuries. Kaisou has never opted to use his Zanpakuto offensively or for harm, but it was made apparent after several centuries of connecting with his Zanpakuto that he could very well do so. When used against an enemy—or at the very least someone who Kaisou has deemed to be such—the jellyfish instead cleanse said enemy of traits they consider valuable. This includes physical strength, speed, stamina, and even reiryoku at a slow pace. In the face of his shikai, the strong become weak, the fast becomes slow, and the spiritually rich are forced to face their own inferiority.

Henrikyousei (片利共生; “Commensalism”, VIZ. “Symbiotic Giving”, “One-Sided”)
To normally mend a large plethora of injuries or more serious injuries, there is often a multitude of Jellyfish working on a single individual. On a rare occasion—perhaps if an ally has sustained severe injuries and wishes to continue fighting against the foe that inflicted them—Kaisou will employ just a singular jellyfish. As opposed to the normal scrubbing of its tentacles to wipe away all the impurities, it will instead latch directly onto the said individual, unable to be removed by normal means. While latched, it is constantly repairing the individual’s body, imbuing them with both energy and vigor. They are capable of having wounds healed as they are inflicted, as well as being gifted Reiryoku directly from Kaisou himself. This ability is famed for allowing allies to fight well beyond their limits, and ensure they continue to cheat death under his watch. As its usage suggests, this takes a massive toll on Kaisou as a price. But more often than not, the man is willing to sacrifice himself and his own health in order to successfully perform it.

Shabondama (シャボン玉; “Soap Bubbles” VIZ. “Cleaning Orbs”)
While the jellyfish take most of the visual attention of En-You Souji’s Shikai, they are but a product if not one in the same with the bubbles spawned from the Zanpakuto’s kashira. While some of the bubbles transform into the jellyfish, many do not, and yet still retain the same capabilities and some of the same usages. The bubbles are capable of completely enveloping large things or people, encapsulating them within. Even more notably, these bubbles are capable of intercepting things that attempt to breach their surface. A large cero blast could find itself being trapped inside of one of En-You Souji’s bubbles, while its innate and destructive power gets siphoned away rendering it completely useless. Those that attempt to sever the bubbles or the jellyfish alike are quickly disappointed, only to find out that what they struck has simply separated and multiplied by two. The bubbles independently are helpful when performing surgeries, able to isolate one liquid from another, while also being used to store things within them. This makes them extremely helpful during blood transfusions and other similar procedures. It is also not uncommon for Kaisou to fill the Fourth Division’s hot springs up with these bubbles, allowing all in attendance to partake in a bubble bath that would restore the vitality of even the most dilapidated individuals.

– To many people’s surprise, Kaisou actually has aspirations of becoming a Captain someday. The reason–however–would surprise no one. Someone once overheard him fawning over the idea of a dazzling white coat to go with the rest of his uniform, and it seems he hasn’t been able to shake the thought of it since.
— Kaisou is a character inspired by Yumichika from Bleach, Sanji from One Piece, and Yuga Aoyama from My Hero Academia.
– Kaisou constantly contributes to the Seireitei Communication Column with dating advice, appearance ratings, speed dating columns, and even mystery dates!
– Kaisou is personally confident that his Zanpakuto–perhaps when combined with the necessary research—could be capable of curing something as profound as hollowfication. This is primarily based on its ability to isolate and destroy impurities, and there is no larger impurity than hollowfication.

Personal Relationships
  • Sango Tsutsui - The loud and boisterous woman was at one point in time, looked at as a nuisance to Kaisou beyond measure. This of course, was an initial judgment, and was quickly dispelled once the two actually exchanged words. The woman was primarily seen as Tōsu’s absurdly large shadow that seemed to go wherever he went, ironically making the two of them stand out while Tōsu would much rather remain under the radar. Kaisou often praises her makeup and carries on about how she has models’ legs, and in response she feeds the man’s ego and returns the praises. The two of them have a sort of mutualism, and he’s grown from tolerating her, to actually caring for her.

  • Tōsu Shohei - Undoubtedly the man’s closest friend and confidant, Tōsu and Kaisou have been ‘aware’ of each other since the academy days but did not become close until much later. Kaisou unintentionally uncovered the affliction the man was suffering from and made it his life mission to not only treat it, but cure it. This was not made out of care for the man, but instead his own pride; there was no challenge he was yet to conquer, no ailment he was unable to cure. This would prove untrue after encountering Tōsu’s disease. Even still, he began to treat the perceived 10th Division slacker quite consistently, and it was then the bond had formed. Mostly, Tōsu talked and Kaisou listened, but it was his own silence that formed the bonds of friendship. Tōsu preferred to keep his disease a secret, and Kaisou could never sever Doctor-Patient confidentiality. He soon learned that the man was simply putting on a facade because of his dislike for the spotlight, but is truly one of the more talented, and hardworking individuals Kaisou has come to know.

  • Junko Izumi - Lieutenant Junko, though kind in nature, has simply come to tolerate Kaisou. While his personality can be rather obnoxious, she cannot deny the man’s talent as a healer and his overall value in the division. He has been seen—at times—harmlessly flirting with his superior just to get a smile from her if she’s having a down day, or giving her a small compliment when he feels she hasn’t heard one in a while. Overall, he makes it his goal to appeal to the good side of his superior that he cares for and respects.

  • Yū Nakamoto - Captain Nakamoto, The Fairy, the young man of many names is a prodigy and an infamous name throughout the Seireitei. Kaisou treats his Captain in a similar way to his lieutenant, always brown nosing him while also soaking up as much as he can when learning from the man. Although young, he is a valued mentor, standing as the creator of a plethora of techniques that Kaisou himself uses consistently. Despite not having any interest in men at all, Kaisou is not above flirting with his Captain either, anything to entertain his own ego and to get him through the day. Captain Nakamoto, although a superior, is also considered a friend. Among all Captains, Kaisou respects him most, and has even denied lieutenant positions in other divisions to remain by the Captain’s side.

Notable Features:
Physical Description:
Let's start with his hair, the hair resting on the boys well..head is a shade of yellow. He cuts it regularly to maintain its well-defined shape and tone. Strangely enough he doesn't prefer changing it to be more fancy, he likes it just the way it is. In terms of face it's almost child-like, many would misinterpret him as some typical academy student but that's not the case here. With perfectly straight white teeth when he smiles, it almost gleams in the sunlight. His cheekbones are well-defined though not at the age of an adult.

Kai stands at an average height of 5'5 a typical one for every adolescent boy at his age. His shoulders are broad albeit slender considering his height and stature.

When nervous he'll tap his feet at a rapid pace similar to a rabbit. His clothing varies from his traditional uniform to summer and winter wear.

Kai’s outfits come in many different shapes and sizes, and this is no exception. Due to his slender frame he always has to wear medium. He keeps his clothing neat and tidy, maybe due to his mothers nature of maintaining a clean household whilst his father was more straight-forward. Such as teaching him ways of becoming a better man, including treating people with the utmost respect especially women. They gave him both sides of the same coin, one was more nurturing whilst the other philosophical.

Personality:
Positive:

Calm: Kai is not often one to 'blow up' in any given situation. However, most people would consider that an understatement. Many people that have met the boy will all share one common consensus: he seems to not care about anything. Of course this is untrue. He boy apathetic or careless. He simply is a boy that understands that there is very little need to constantly be losing ones head.

Patient: This often goes hand in hand with a person of a very calm nature. Over the years, Kai has gained a level of patience that many people would compare to a saint. While he does have his moments of impatience, more often than not, Kai is a boy that can spend hours trying to teach someone something without any genuine change in mood between the start and end. Many people merely assume that this is either a side effect of his calm nature, or why he is as calm as he is.

Generous:

Kai isn’t one to be selfish, whether it’d be giving a simple amount of change to those less fortunate or giving money to his parents. His generosity is his biggest positive, however it does lead to disadvantages, being this generous leads him to be easily manipulated. Sometimes leading him to becoming low on money, he tries to do good but sometimes it can lead to bad consequences. Despite these downfalls he still maintains the good attitude he now has inside of himself, his parents worry that but he assures he’ll be more attentive.

Compassionate:

With sensitivity comes compassion; and compassion may as well be his middle name. If someone needs a shoulder to lean on in time of need? He's right there. Someone to help them stand strong? Not an issue, he's got their back.

Be it offering money, helping rebuild with his blood, sweat, and tears-- of which there are many— or devoting time to aiding others in need as a form of penance, Kai’s naturally generous and open hearted spirit has remained relatively unchanged in spite of his experiences. His words and actions for those less fortunate to those in distress of any sort reflect upon a natural inclination and urge to help, to “heal” and otherwise alleviate the malaise in others. If something can be done, he will make sure he does it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Honest -

Deception is something that Kai could never pull off very well, and it's gotten even worse over time. He admits a little too freely that he doesn't know something or someone, and will only answer honestly even if he knows it'll hurt him in the long run. By being forthright, he believes he can be trusted and thus won't be suspected of hiding an agenda that he really doesn't have up his sleeve.

Devoted -

Through thick or thin, better or worse and death-till-we-part, Kai’s loyalty is first and foremost with those he is attached to... regardless of if they feel the same way. A friend who has only been around for a week is treated with the same dedicated care and concern as someone she's known for years on end. There is almost no limit to what he will tolerate or endure for the friends and family he loves so dearly, and what few times he has actually severed people out of his lives wound up devastating him, causing him to treasure those he holds dear all the more. Though his feelings remain much the same, he has had to learn how to keep himself distance from them for their own good... as detrimental an effect as it may be on those he loves-- not to mention himself.

Playful -

Kai enjoys the more light hearted and childish things in life- such as going to a park and playing like he were half his age all over again. Anything from climbing a tree- especially when he knows he's not supposed to- to having a snowball fight in winter or splashing someone in the summertime, he enjoys harmless little tricks and pranks to make people smile and forget about their troubles for a few minutes. All in all, Kai enjoys the little things in life that people tend to forget about once they’ve “grown up”... though he has had precious little to call 'fun' or celebrate as of late.

As a shinigami fresh out

Sensing Reiryoku:

Basic--

Reiryoku is something Kai has always had difficulty with, the only source he can find his other sources similar to his own. However, those with height-reiryoku senses can find him easily and stick out like a sore thumb. This can hinder training amongst himself and the two of them.

Reiryoku Control:

No Control- l

As in terms of kido it was never his strongest out of all the academy students. Most of the time he knows the basics, not exactly knowing the more advanced fundamentals of it all. Leaving him wide open for attacks as he doesn't know any advanced barrier techniques or the latter.

Reiatsu:

Novice- Reiatsu isn't good, as it makes him easily detectable. In terms of other spiritual beings he'll easily succumb to their pressure no matter what difficulty they have. Though he's able to content with those of similar level to him.
The reason why is reiatsu isn't the best is his lack of interest in the subject at hand, almost becoming lazy in the process. The lack of training regarding his interest in the academy has led him to becoming an absolute novice in that regard.
Reiatsu Colors: Blue

Reiatsu Shape: A large lollipop

Reiatsu Type:

Standard Type-
The type most spiritual beings have that can hold any of the aforementioned effects, along with its unique color and feeling.

It terms of the reiatsu itself it gives a sugary taste, as the certain amount of sugar can increase the amount of time ones teeth are exposed to the effects of these sugary effects. Causing the teeth to rot in the process (which is obviously a figurative reason)

Element Type- None

Zanjutsu Level:

Zanjutsu
(斬術, Swordsmanship; Viz "Art of the Sword")

Practitioner- In terms of zanjutsu Kai isn't the best, growing up he preferred the method of Hakuda. While swordsmanship is a great alternative in battle he prefers to get up close and personal with his opponents.
Zanjutsu was a bunch of swords clashing and sparks flying, with that in mind he didn't enjoy the

He believed that since the majority of zanpaktou's are swords he figured they were so cliche due to how many their were in the world. At least that's what he's seen during his time as a student, why not just go with fist instead? It sounds cooler and getting one's hands dirty is what fuels his lust for battle.

Known Techniques: What techniques does your character know?

Hohō Level: The name given to one of the four combat skills of the Shinigami and relates to footwork. Hohō (歩法, Step Method; Viz "Fast Movement")

Shunpo Practitioner- Practitioner of Kai's shunpo is average at best, when utilizing this technique he is as fast as any academy student. Using it to the best of his abilities, however it will leave him winded out of breath. Similar to running miles during a tracking section. When using this technique he knows some knowledge of close quarters as it's his strong suit.

Known Techniques: Shunpo

Hakuda Level:

Hakuda (白打, White Hits; Viz "Hand-to-Hand Combat")

Hakuda Practitioner-

Hakuda was Kai's peanut butter and jelly, using unarmed combat rather than a weapon was his favorite strong suit. While he is still an academy student honing his skills he yearns to learn from the best teachers amongst the specialty as a while. Combat wise regarding Hakuda he only knows the basics and hasn't created his own unique fighting style. But with enough training he'll find something that suits himself as an individual.

Terms of combat styles he prefers typical karate, though his favorite is the Goju-ryu style. Which uses of formidable counter-strike movements along with offensive positions and soft and circular blocks. Incorporating breathing properties to increase fighting proficiency and impact.
Known Techniques:

Chōhigezutsuki

Kido Skill Level:

Kidō (鬼道, Demon/Spirit Way; Viz "Demon Arts")

Novice-

Kai’s time at the academy was a cruel one. He was lucky to even pass the kido portion of the academy. Every attempt left it backfiring or not working at the basic level. Kido as concept while interesting didn't fill his niche as a potential shinigami down the line. All these incantations seemed long and inefficient against opponents who are faster than him, that's why he prefers to use them without said incantation. While weaker its better than wasting his entire time saying long words.

As in terms of kido it was never his strongest out of all the academy students. Most of the time he knows the basics, not exactly knowing the more advanced fundamentals of it all. Leaving him wide open for attacks as he doesn't know any advanced barrier techniques or the latter.

Biography:

As the bells tolled all across the high school everyone left immediately except the occasional slow coach or chatterbox. The man was having a good day with exceptionally good grades and attendance. However even though he has issues, first the school work and much more. She yearned for the unexpected to happen.

As he walked across the school to head home he glanced at a few individuals on the tables there were three of them, one girl and two guys. The girl sat between the two very good looking boys; she was short and thin.

The taller of the two guys was laid back scanning the area in his jacket while the more average toned one was whispering in the girl's ear as the two of them laughed.

The skinny one tells the tall one what he could assume was some type of joke, he laughs too. Kai would loathe to be in their shoes wanting to be the type of person she always wished she could be.

Kai was once a young man who was easily manipulated by others due to his kind and compassionate behavior. Within school he was average at best in terms of test scores. He always kept to himself in certain situations such as socializing.

One day he was doing homework within the classroom, as a hollow attacked, quickly he tried to escape from their grasp but he was eventually caught with a slash to his body.

As a result he died, wondering if he'll become a spirit wandering around the world of the living for all eternity until a mysterious figure had used Konso as a means to send them towards a place called the soul society.

Kai has no recollection of his past, now a novice individual within the academy. Once inside he's been lectured with various types of techniques for shinigami such as Hoho, Zanjutsu, and much more.

His scores within the various tyoes of techniques varied from absolutely wonderful to extremely poor. Especially with the kido portion, only being able to do the basics which would backfire or require total concentration for them to be utilized.

Notable Features:
Noi is about as middle of the ground as they come. Her face isn’t remarkable, she’s average height, average weight for her height. She could drift into the background all too easily were it not for her peachy pink hair and outstandingly audacious personality.

Personality:
A chronic optimist that is often idealizing people in her mind, seeing them as who she WANTS them to be, rather than who they truly are. Because of this, Noi often finds herself in the throes of “love”, jumping from crush-to-crush like a lovesick teenager, fantasies of romance and princely behaviour clouding her already rose-tinted glasses at every step of her life.

She tries, with all of her might, to come across the damsel, the princess in need, the cute girly-girl that can’t do anything without her ~True Love~ there to rescue her. To the contrary, she’s a tomboy through and through. The type to get playfully punch-y with the various objects of her misplaced affections, or even outright violent with anyone that gets on her nerves.

She tries to play her more violent leanings off as cute, or as jokes, it’s hard to ignore the fact she’s stronger than any damsel she’s attempted to model herself off of. A rough-and-tumble type to the core, Noi finds the most enjoyment in rolling around in the dirt wrestling, or goofing off until someone she’s interested appears, at which she’ll do her utmost to appear as prim and proper as she can. She can’t rightly find a good husband if she’s perceived as a dirty person that enjoys getting their hands dirty, right?

Reckless with her own life, Noi can’t offer much in the way of forethought in a battle. She’d much rather go in, guns blazing, than to sit for even one second to think about her next move. Because, really, who needs to think if they are too stubborn to give-up, to just stay down if they are sent flying? Besides, Noi’s upbringing instilled a unwillingness to back-down in her, a complete lack of giving a fuck about her own wellbeing as long as she wins.

Despite her aggression overall, she’d much rather not be fighting at all. In her own warped perception of reality, she thinks she’d be happy being a housewife to a hardworking Shinigami, in spite of all the signs pointing to the opposite.

When she’s around other girls, or those she’s not expressly interested in romantically, Noi comes off as boy-ish, almost to an extreme, taking on traits most often associated with teenage boys. Impulsive, Crude, and a little below average intelligence. Certainly a combination she thinks would make her unappealing.

Deep down, she understands that she should be herself, should be true to herself and to others, yet she can never bring herself to let go of her upbringing. The threat of the same loneliness of her grandmother scratching at her mind every moment of every day, telling her that to avoid that fate, she needs to be a good girl. She needs to get married, become a housewife, give up all of her own aspirations, and live the simple life of a mother.

She truly is an optimist, always looking to the bright side, even when she’s near-dead and barely clinging to life. It could always be worse, could always have the shorter end of the stick, could always be dead. As long as she’s still alive, her gusto for life will never fade, will always beam to the heavens that she is ready to face adversity with her head held high. She’s more than willing to laugh off anything and everything in the name of her own unending pep.

Relatives:
A grandmother, Momotomo Momokoe. The two have very little contact with one another, Noi having all but cut-off communication as soon as she entered the Academy. However, her grandmother still sends her an allowance, often having to go through the postal service to get her the money.

Reiryoku Level: High Spiritual PowerReiryoku Control: No ControlSensing Reiryoku: Basic

Noi is uncontrollable. A wild beast that has no master, and her Reiryoku shows that in the most extreme way. A mass of constantly unrestricted chaos boiling around her at any given moment, yet she is completely unaffected by the sheer amount of spiritual pressure she exerts day-in and day-out. She’s certainly nothing compared to a Captain, a Lieutenant either, but being around her can be… Difficult if one's senses are too tuned in. Most days she’s at least tolerable, but the smallest spike of adrenaline leaves her bubbling over, knocking not only the wind out of herself, but others weaker than her.

Her attempts at reining her spiritual energy in always fail, leaving her sick, throwing up from her unfamiliarity with it. Her grandmother attempted to teach her to control her reiryoku, to control herself, but it always failed. Always a failure, is what she was called whenever she would end up pushed beyond her limit, heaving and weak.

Gauging her opponents is another weak point of Noi’s. She’s no expert in sensing their strength physically, so needless to say it carries over to reiryoku as well. Her reckless behaviour hinders her in most, if not all, scenarios.

Reiatsu: Novice

While Noi certainly has a lot of reiryoku, her ability to exert it of her own will is close to null. While she has some ability to use her spiritual pressure, she's nowhere near capable enough to wholly control it, let alone resist the intense spiritual pressures of those more powerful than she is. Often brought to her knees at even the smallest bit of reiatsu, she runs into trouble against anyone that would seek to paralyze her with their aura. She has a similar issue as with her general reiryoku, an inability to control when and where she exerts her spiritual pressure, leaving her worse off in dire straights when control would benefit her.

Reiatsu Colors:
A stark, almost hard to look at purple, with an off-red center.

Reiatsu Type:
Standard Type

Zanjutsu Level: SwordsmanHakuda Level: Hakuda CombatantHohō Level: No Shunpo

Making up for her failings in other aspects, Noi is a talented swordsman. Someone who knew what she was meant for the moment she held her first practice sword. Her sheer strength and inability to understand when she was beaten kept her from completely flunking out of the academy. Her technique isn’t anything special, she lacks the needed finesse of a seasoned all-rounder swordsman, all that's keeping her afloat is that brutal power etched into her small frame.

Even her hand-to-hand is exceptional. She has to be, to get the upper hand, knowing full well if she couldn’t hold her own without her Zanpakuto, she’d be dead in an instant. She has to make up for all of her shortcomings in whatever ways she can. Thankfully, her brute strength carried over from her sword, leaving her more than enough power to rip a creature in half with naught more than her bare hands, something she takes great pride in.

850faf9ad6d2c8b8d091f3209bab09bd0abba8d5.pnj

Much akin to her lack of talent in controlling her spiritual pressure, Noi would often end up brought to her knees when attempting Shunpo, spitting up her lunch to the point she would be allowed to sit out on those lessons and instead go back to training her swordsmanship. It hurt, it did, to be left out, but even she knew she wasn’t meant for speed.

Known Techniques:
Tesshō || Kagamibiraki

Kido Skill Level: Unable

Much like her other weaknesses, Noi finds herself lacking what some would consider a core skill of being a Shinigami-- Kido. All of her attempts to learn kido, any spell at all, end up blowing up in her face, backfiring completely. Calling her Completely Useless in the art would be an understatement after witnessing how even the simplest of spells with full focus on the incantation try to take her arm off in an explosion should she attempt them. She's completely unclear why she's unable to use it, and all she can do is accept it as yet another failure.

Skills and Abilities:
1. Enhanced Endurance: She’s more than capable of running, training, or exerting herself physically for large amounts of time. It wasn’t a choice on her part, so much as a necessity in order to keep up with others due to her complete lack of skill in Shunpo.

2. Enhanced Durability: Noi is built like a tank in the most internal sense possible. She can sustain injury, after injury, after injury, and still get back up, no problem. It may be painful, but the pain is nothing compared to the hit her pride in her abilities would sustain.

Zanpakuto Name: Shōshin || 『傷心』(heartbreak)

Zanpakuto Appearance:
68ce5a963a18572706f7f877eba9357e72d383e8.pnj

Shōshin is a simple blade while sealed, nothing truly remarkable about it. Its sheath is a dull reddish-brown, with a dark brown ito wrap, white samegawa, and faux gold kashine and tsuba. The sageo is a soft pink, wrapping farther up the sheath than would normally be expected, charms of the gikon Steiner hanging from it alongside the kurigata, giving it a childish vibe.

Zanpakuto Spirit:

Shōshin manifests himself as a tall, pure black humanoid, with dark red, almost black spiky hair, pure white eyes, a red Inverness coat alongside red gloves, and red leggings that cover the entirety of his lower half.

He wears a hollow-like mask with white tendrils that are almost paper-like attached to it, constantly flowing in non-existent wind. The mask has mime-like markings around his mouth and eyes.

96bec1b0f410881eb67dc2526aba6c16dc2a11aa.gif
Despite his strikingly tall, intimidating appearance; Shōshin is a being filled with the sorrows of his wielder, perhaps even the world, tears often streaking his mask, yet entirely silent. Shōshin feels his despair strongly, wearing it upon his sleeves almost like a badge of honour, telling any who see him that he is a soft creature that only wants for the happiness of others. This is especially obvious in his relationship with his wielder. He thinks it his duty to help her lock away the sorrow she feels deep in her soul, to protect her from the loneliness of her childhood.

Shōshin almost views himself as a father to Noi, someone she can rely on when times get tough. He loves her so much that his tears flow ever more freely when she is hurting.

Inner World:
3fe28423822d38e3c6e39de93392b8abb5e68f93.png

A beautiful place of brightly glowing flowers, floating stones and land masses, extending far beyond the horizon, yet no matter how far one may walk they will never reach the mountains looming under the star-filled galaxy-like sky. You will only ever find yourself walking in circles, in an endless field of flowers that brush at your ankles.

It’s solitary, giving the feeling of being trapped in a loop, trapped in your own footsteps, nowhere to flee to if danger were to ever encroach upon you.

Shōshin can often be found staring at the sky as he weeps.

Shikai Special Ability: Tekii || 『敵意』(hostility)
Upon releasing Shōshin becomes a large, two-handed great sword with two almost star-like notches on its underside, and a red tsuba taking up a small portion of the bottom of the sword, silver rivets along the top of the tsuba, and an elongated hilt that has multiple indents along it.

Shōshin’s ability is fairly simple; Whoever touches it, or the mist it excretes, will find themselves becoming enveloped in the red mist. Each subsequent interaction with Shōshin will only make the mist stronger, and deeper in its red colour. The mist creates an aura of hostility, aiming to agitate its victim until eventually their rage builds to a full blown bloodlust, rendering them unable to think straight, only wanting to kill, kill, kill, ignoring all good reasoning.

Biography:
Upon her death, Noi found herself in the 25th District of North Rukongai, with nary a memory of her life, let alone any ties to other people in Rukongai that she could even attempt to track down. Hardly more than a child, her toddling stage only a year or two behind her, she couldn’t do much more than wander, and wander, and wander. Looking for something, anything, to ground her to this place she found herself in.

It seemed like weeks of wandering, aimlessly, alone, rejecting every offer extended to her to join various small families. All she could do to explain her constant refusals was say she was looking for someone– Yet it was obvious she wasn’t. A little girl, lost to aimlessness, that was all too clear to those in the district that took pity upon her.

In all reality, she didn’t know why she was so adamant, to all but starve herself as her spiritual pressure only continued to grow and siphon off the energy within her tiny body. Perhaps she was waiting for the perfect home, the perfect family, to find her. She knew she could enjoy her life in Rukongai with any array of kindly people that extended their warmth to her, yet…

It wasn’t long before her hunger was noticed, a stark growling all but screaming from her torso 24/7. An elderly woman, one she hadn’t seen in the district prior, offered her food, good food, nice food, food that she’d certainly seen before, yet had never thought she’d have the chance to eat. As she devoured whatever she was offered, the woman, identifying herself as Momotomo Momokoe, asked her if she’d join her family. Perhaps she was so one-track minded, absorbed by her growing fantasies of grandeur, Noi accepted without hesitation.

Noi, being as young as she was, could hardly describe the solemn look the woman gave her, but it stuck with her. The look of someone so distant, so tired, so sad. In Noi’s mind, it should’ve been a joyous occasion, yet she was only met with that look, and quietly ushered to the woman's carriage.

Noi was allowed to get accustomed to her new life, being fitted for fancy new kimono, gorgeous hair accessories, and given toys. She thought it was heaven, being there, being fed delicious food and doted on by the few servants that wandered the grounds. They knew that she would be put through hell soon enough, doing what they could to give her some fond memories to look back at.

The training started off as it would inevitably end– In blood, sweat, tears, and screaming. Koe had no patience for children, and a stern cruelty that Noi hadn’t experienced in her short life. She never let Noi rest, even at the beginning, forcing the child to her feet even as her knees gave out under her, too weak and beaten to do much more than cry.

It took only one incident for Noi to find out what would happen if she disobeyed. Her legs were bruised, half covered by bandages, face swollen from being hit by the various opponents her grandmother hired to help train her, breathing short and laboured. If she could truly keep standing, she would have. Her knees gave out, alongside her mind, passing out for hours. As she awoke, she saw her grandmother sitting beside her bed, dissatisfied scowl wrinkling her face beyond what it already was. She told Noi, in no butchered words, that she had been given her punishment while she ‘slept’, and to go look in the mirror.

Noi did as she was instructed, seeing her hair, hair she took great pride in upkeeping, hair that she wanted to grow out until the day she died, cut short, cropped close to her head. It was heartbreaking to her. It drilled home to her, far more than any of the beatings she took, that she was not a person to her grandmother. She was just a means to an end, and heir to carry on the name she had no attachment to, yet was forced upon her without the knowledge of what it carried with it.

She was forced to keep her hair short for the rest of her time at the estate, crying through only the first few before she grew numb to it. To see something she treasured so deeply being scoured about the ground. Her autonomy was taken from her completely, so what else could she do but accept her fate?

When she wasn’t watching Noi being thrown around by people much older and more experienced than her, Momokoe would sit, alone, in a dimly lit room, staring at a portrait. A portrait of a man Noi had never seen, who she would never truly know until she got older.

It would be many, many years before she truly realized why her Grandmother was all alone in a small estate- No children, no actual grandchildren, and certainly no heir potential besides Noi- Rumours surrounding the old woman only coming to Noi when the servants thought she wasn’t around. Momokoe was a young widower. Certainly not young anymore, but widowed so many eons ago that she couldn’t even remember the face of her husband were it not for the portrait she kept of him, yet she stayed single, alone, for her entire life after his untimely death.

Her grandmother's loneliness was something Noi wanted to avoid, to not become the same bitter, cruel person her Grandmother had warped into in all the centuries of being alone. Noi would get married, over and over and over if she had to, so she would never be alone, never succumbing to the morose stain embedded in her upbringing.

Her acceptance into the academy was naught more than a formality, something to be expected, not to be celebrated. But to Noi, it was freedom. An escape. It would be a place she could become a better person, and to seek out a full way to escape her grandmother– Marriage. If she were to take the name of someone else, someone more powerful than her grandmother, she would no longer be tied to the Momotomo, and be truly free to be who she thought she should be.

Notable Features

Nao’s most notable feature is her long ginger hair, a full mane to which she dresses up in a ponytail with thick bangs left in front to fall across her jawline; she wears it up using a green silk hair tie.

Once you get past the orange, you’ll come to look down and find a singular but gorgeous sea-green eye. She lost her left a long time ago, its absence replaced by a sizable scar. Otherwise, it’s no secret that Nao boasts a gentle beauty swooned over by many in the Soul Society. She’s about average in height, light-skinned, feminine and almost “girly” in appearance, with a thin build, although she does boast quite large breasts for her size.

Her approach to clothing is as one should expect from a ranking member of a military organization; she has a thing for looking sharp and clean, “well-put together” as she would say, so her Shihakushō and her long-sleeved tattered Haori are both tailored to her exact bodily specifications. She wears a second coat over her Haori, designed in a pattern of orange and teal. To her, dress is as integral to one's identity as anything else; it is entwined with the core of a person, an extension of their self just as much as their Zanpakutō. Her garment is held together by a weighted, crimson sash, embroidered with a golden phoenix. She wears a pair of four-inch elevated Geta, double toothed, sockless, her nails painted green.

Personality

Nao is the epitome of optimism, a bright beacon of positivity and uplifting good vibes. She’s nearly always cracking a warm smile, her pearly whites glistening in the brightness of the gorgeous sunlight. She’s pleasant, amicable, courteous, and frequently immersed in laughter. She is known amongst her Division as a “Captain’s Captain”, due to her motherly disposition and protective nature. Nao will go out of her way to ensure those around her are well, lending aid in any manner at her disposal.

A practitioner of Stoicism, Nao is known for her dedication to the intellectual pursuit for truth. Reason and sense guide her through life, doubly so as a ranking officer of the Gotei 13, where difficult decisions must be made on the regular. Although she’s taken to the values of honor and loyalty to one’s cause, doing what she believes to be right trumps all. That is not to say that she is beholden to her beliefs, for to be a philosopher is to be humble; she strives to keep an open mind, and to listen more than she speaks, because the years have taught her that only fools open their mouths before understanding. If a compelling enough argument is made, she’s willing to concede to another’s beliefs.

Courtesy and respect are given until the recipient is proven undeserving, but fret not for if one finds themselves on her naughty list, they will come to understand that she believes in second chances if receiving forgiveness is their aim. But only second chances. “Deceive me once, shame on you. Twice, shame on me,” is a common proverb heard within the Seventh Division compound. Speaking of proverbs, Nao’s speech is littered with them. If there existed an idiomatic dialect, she would be its creator. Words have meaning, possessing a weight many don’t care to uphold, and she chooses her speech with purposeful consideration. Her delivery of speech is with calm and resounding projection, seldom one to stutter.

This degree of care extends to her views on violence and the aforementioned’s effect of death on others. This is why she approaches confrontation with immense care, opting to settle things diplomatically if able; if non-violence is futile, then violence she will embrace, especially in circumstances challenging her duty, the welfare of those under her command, and the welfare of the Soul Society. Her greatest fear is to fall short of her own personal standards. Being flawed, even for a philosopher who understands failure begets progress, can be difficult to accept.

With all of that said, Nao enjoys the company of her comrades, whether that be of colleagues from other Divisions or of her own Division members. A laughter-filled sit among nature with some sake, good food and a smoke or two is a welcomed affair after a hard-day's work.

Reiryoku Level: Great Spiritual Power | Reiryoku Control: Mastered

Being a younger soul and of no prodigal substance, Nao’s spiritual coffers are not yet as deep as many of her peers; even some Shinigami of lower rank boast more Reiryoku. What she lacks in quantity she makes up for in sheer refinement, allowing her to square up with the best of them.

“It’s not how much you have, but rather how well you use it,” she likes to say, and isn’t that the truth? Decades dedicated to the acquisition of mastery over her own spiritual power have borne fruit, and my how delicious the results are!

To her, expending Reiryoku is no more taxing than taking a brisk walk. So masterful she is over her Reiryoku that this efficiency has become second-nature, where she no longer must divert focus on its preservation. This has aided tremendously in her past battles with those who have outclassed her in total spiritual energy. This acquired efficiency allows her to maintain her Shikai state indefinitely, and rumor has it, her Bankai as well. Simply, she gets more bang for her buck per individual metric of Reiryoku used. For how destructive her Zanpakutō is, it’s quite a feat that she doesn’t seem to ever run out of energy.

Nao primarily utilizes this mastery of her Reiryoku to enhance her capabilities. This enhancement is most evidently exemplified through Zanjutsu and Shunpo, where she merges mastery over Reiryoku and practiced technique to achieve substantial feats. Her foremost application is to focus her Reiryoku into her body and blade to enhance both the destructive potential, effect, and speed of her abilities.

She prefers to keep her whereabouts hidden, if able, and so she’s learned to plug her Reiryoku leaks. Combined with her outstanding capabilities with Shunpo, opponents tend to find it difficult to track her in the midst of battle.

Sensing Reiryoku: Mastered

From the very first day in the Academy, Nao took a keen interest in understanding Reiryoku, advancing it with whatever time she had left over from her Zanjutsu and Shunpo studies. Learning early the importance of Reiryoku Sensing in its absolute reliance by those who take up the sword, she truly had no choice in the matter. Her push into improving this discipline came not from a burning desire to understand the spiritual domain, but rather a need to enhance her understanding of how to get the most out of her blade.

Centuries of dedication have bestowed upon her remarkably heightened senses, a second and infinitely more accurate set of eyes with which she sees the world hundreds of miles at a distance. She is capable of the basics: picking up individual signatures, identifying them, and differentiating origin. Her true mastery lies in her capacity to utilize this secondary sight as a sixth sense, to which she may discern otherwise unknowable details about another’s intent; sometimes, she may come to know something before the other person has completed the transfer from thought to action. No matter how skilled one is with masking their intent, if you look hard enough, there’s always some form of leak. It is a frightening thing to have one’s opponent always seem to be one step ahead, and Nao’s enemies find themselves cursing at her bewildering foresight, speculating whether it is merely an aspect of her Zanpakutō or something else entirely.

Reiatsu: Mastered | Reiatsu Type: Standard | Reiatsu Shape: Phoenix
Reiatsu Color: Red-Orange | Reiatsu Effect: Phantom Pain - Damage - Elation

“Her spiritual pressure makes it feel as if you’re on cloud-nine! It’s like she’s pumping you with some magical juice that makes you feel unbeatable, it’s fucking amazing! Wish I could just be around her all the time…oh, I’m not addicted at all, you are.”
- Unnamed 7th Division Seated Officer

When released, Nao’s Reiatsu manifests into the world in a manner dependent on who you are to her.

If an ally, her Reiatsu initially falls upon them like a warm blanket, easing their pains, physical or otherwise. Slowly therein it will make its way into the body, pumping them with elation, taking them into a state of ecstasy. Even those found beaten and bruised will rise with renewed resolve. It is a morale booster like no other.

If an enemy, her Reiatsu affects their nerve receptors, making them feel as though they are being boiled from the inside out; like fire is pumping through their veins and arteries, traveling throughout and scorching everything on the way. Some have reported terrible cases of heartburn and indigestion, unable to keep food down for weeks.

In either case, from the depths of her Reiatsu emerges a large Phoenix, its powerful scream thundering across the landscape for miles. Though she may not possess an immense pool of Reiryoku, the mastery she possesses over her Reiatsu is shocking. The centuries have born witness to a master capable of forcing her Reiatsu to listen to her will, sharpened to conduct itself in a manner appropriate to her desired effect. Nao has learned to mold her Reiatsu into a weapon, one she can utilize to inflict physical harm on her enemies.

Zanjutsu Level: Mastered

A love for the sword is a love for killing, and though Nao holds an equal love for life, she enjoys the feeling when her blade cuts flesh. It’s a primal instinct written into her DNA, that which she cannot and dare not attempt to alienate, for she has once tried only to have fallen into a deep depression. She is not to be mistaken with a mindless killer who exists only to thirst for blood; she is more than able to wait decades, even centuries, to satisfy this desire.

Swordsmanship is personal, a part of who she is, an extension of her existence; this state is compounded by the transcendantal intimacy shared between a Shinigami and their Zanpakutō. So in-tune with her Zanpakutō Nao is that she’s learned how to manipulate it telepathically, adding yet another layer of mastery to her swordsmanship.

She has dedicated nearly all of her Shinigami life to the pursuit of swordsmanship perfection, if such a thing were possible. “Thousands of forms, practiced thousands of times,” is her motto, the foundational principle to her approach in learning just about anything. When she comes across a novel technique, she devotes her mind, body and soul into its mastery. In order to acquire the requisite comprehension, one must be both a practitioner and a scholar, and in the case of Zanjutsu, Nao sought out many of the revered swordmasters across the Seireitei: Captain Shizuka the Thundergod, the Phantom Captain Mukuro, Captain Higeshi the BEAST, and the White Death Suiyo Kusotare and his Lieutenant, Kyōraku the Nightmare Blade!

Nao employs the techniques found in most known disciplines of Zanjutsu, and so it’s hard to relate her to one specific style, this fact bestowing upon her the moniker Mugentō-hō Nao (無限刀法の方, Infinite Sword Method Nao). She’ll adapt her skill to the situation so that her blade may succeed in its purpose.

三日月ぶら
Mikadzukibura
Crescent Swing
Nao channels highly condensed Reiryoku into her blade as she swings, manifesting a sharpened mass of Reishi at her blade’s edge that fires out in the same direction. The distance, potency, and to what degree the crescent shaped Reishi continues to expand is dependent on how much Reiryoku is used. It’s not uncommon for Nao to sever enormous objects with a single strike.

枢機卿の揺れ
Sūkikyōyure
Cardinal Sway
Nao has developed this technique by fusing her deep understanding of both Zanjutsu and Reiatsu Manipulation. Her intent to cut is so powerful that her Reiatsu mimics the edge of her blade, the cutting effect conducted through it. This allows her to strike at seemingly infinite locations simultaneously. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is simple; a single manipulation of Umōmaru manifests the intent-laden, sharpened Reiatsu that then does her bidding.

無音流れ
Muon’agare
Soundless Flow
A style of swordsmanship widely regarded to have been founded and mastered by the progenitor of modern Zanjutsu, Yachiru Unohana. The underlying principle is to handle the weapon with such fine and graceful precision, to swing it with such unthinkable speed, to possess so much control over every movement of the blade, that the elements simply bow and accept it as their own; no sound is made, no element is disturbed, the blade simply going about its business melded as one with reality’s decree of nothingness.

絶対的な勧誘
Zettai-Tekinakan'yū
Absolute Solicitation
The swing of a blade so powerful that a strong draft manifests along its path, forcing everything within the immediate vicinity to be dragged along, simultaneously creating a space vacuum. This technique is typically utilized defensively, often to command hostile actions away from her person, though Nao has found equally effective offensive applications.

Hohō Level: Mastered

Footwork is essential for a combatant who prefers to be in close proximity to their opponent, not to mention how integral it is to the foundations of Zanjutsu. A fact Nao realized early, and so her capabilities in Shunpo have grown in equal measure to those of the sword.

Nao is fast, and although there are some very masterful Shunpo practitioners amongst her peers, she can keep up with the best of them. Her greatest development has been in the total distance she can travel with a single step, rumored to be one of the farthest in the Gotei, earning her the nickname Tan'itsudankai Nao (単一段階, One-Step Nao). This has made it nearly impossible for any being to out-run her, and if killing intent has been established, then her victim has nearly no recourse for escape.

Her capacity to evade hostile actions is legendary, a byproduct of impeccable timing learned through centuries of practice. She’s fashioned an involuntary defense response by combining her mastery of both Reiryoku Sensing and Shunpo, where the former instinctively picks up on any and all actions made against her, and the latter responds in kind.

Known Techniques: Senka | Utsusemi | Speed Clones

Hakuda Level: Practitioner

Nao has only been disarmed once in active combat, thus far her desire for Hakuda never having gone beyond a fleeting interest. Neither in her time in the Academy nor in the centuries since has she devoted much into this discipline, save for the most basic of principles. For this reason, she is quite fragile, unable to take powerful attacks head on; thankfully, she does have a high pain tolerance, so she’ll keep on keeping on even if she’s gravely injured.

Known Techniques: None

Kidō Level: Expert

After entry into the Seventh Division, Nao eventually fell into a phase of infatuation with Kidō. What fascinated her about this discipline is its versatility in practical application, insofar as to say that the spark of her intrigue was ignited by laying witness to the feats accomplished by masters of the trade such as Captains Nakamoto and Oda.

This period spanned decades, where she spent much of her time outside of her work-duties studying the Demon Arts, and whenever appropriate, seeking out the expertise and mentorship from those of the Fifth. She is capable of utilizing Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, Incantation Abandonment; Viz "Destruction Chant"), casting spell after spell with visibly little effect on her stamina.

Known Bakudō Spells: Nao is capable of casting all Bakudō spells up to #73 Tozanshō.

Known Hadō Spells: Nao is capable of casting all Hadō spells up to #78 Zangerin.

Skills and Abilities

Philosopher’s Intellect: Nao is a thinker in the abstract, able to break down difficult concepts quickly and in the heat of the moment. This expanded mind has proved useful to her dealings over the years, rewarding her with well-being in overwhelming abundance, and for her comrades as well. Although she may seem like an air-head, a light spirit who sees life as nothing more than a playground for laughter, she’s got a sharp mind.

She’s grown quite the reputation for helping her fellow Shinigami work through issues of the mind and soul, members of all Divisions flocking to her for her renowned therapeutic sessions.

Anatomical Knowledge: Being a master of the sword, it’s only natural for her to understand where to stick the pointy end of her blade. She knows the composition of all known beings from head-to-toe.

Complete Disregard toward Personal Harm: Death is usually something that most beings fear, but Nao isn’t one of them. Thanks to her Zanpakutō, she’s shed that limitation, giving her a baffling degree of nonchalance towards her own life. She’ll jump into risky situations without a second thought, unless of course this decision would affect others, in which case she will opt for the safest path. This is why she prefers to fight alone.

Master Calligrapher: Zanjutsu and Shodō share many principles and as such, Nao took to artistic writing as both a supplemental path to mastery and an artistic pastime.

Gigai (義骸, "Faux Body") – Being a Captain of the Gotei 13, she has opted to acquaint herself to the Gigai. When in her Gigai, she wears a fitted, femine black suit, open collared teal shirt, and a pair of Jimmy Choo heels. Yes ma’am, very professional.

Denreishinki (伝令神機, Divine Messenger Machine; "Soul Pager") – Since Nao spends a lot of her time in the Rukongai, it’s only natural for her to possess a Soul Pager. She’s found great use of this device, for purposes other than professional, one of her favorites being video chatting with folks back home.

Zanpakutō Name: Umōmaru (羽毛丸, Feather Ring)

Zanpakutō Appearance: Umōmaru in its sealed state resembles the many other Zanpakutō born into the Soul Society, the only differentiating characteristics being its golden tsuba and fuchi-kashira, its night-blue and orange ito pattern, and the saya’s double jointed sageo; a lengthy golden string connects the two cords, with a teal bob hanging at the point of tension. It is a katana whose blade measures a meter long.

unknown.png

0925120304f08cfa13f9cbf6cdad3741.png

Zanpakutō Spirit: Umōmaru manifests in the form of a phoenix, the majestic avian creature twenty meters tall, its wingspan double that. Its feathers burn a pattern of red, orange, and teal fire, from scalp to tail. The edges of its wings and tails shine with intense light, nearly blinding, cementing its celestial origins.

Umōmaru is androgynous, the sound of its voice an otherworldly neutral pitch, impossible to point towards masculine or feminine. Much like Nao, this divine creature speaks only when it deems it necessary and with absolute conviction. Their conversations are regularly filled with periods of silence, both of them enjoying the company of each other’s presence. Nao often looks to Umōmaru for guidance, having found her spirit to be a repository of wisdom. Although their relationship is amicable, it was not always so, due to the phoenix’s lack of regard for life. Nao has learned to accept her inner spirit for what it is.

0925120304f08cfa13f9cbf6cdad3741.png

Inner World: Umōmaru’s world is that of an infinite blue filled with an equally infinite quantity of phoenix feathers. These feathers range in sizes from mere centimeters to ones as large as buildings; feather’s litter the ground, forming an exquisitely soft bed for Nao to lay in, all the while covering the blue sky as far as the eye can see. They move about on their own accord, or at the will of Umōmaru itself (who really knows?), at times coming together to form all kinds of interesting shapes.

SPOILER_Nao_shikai-1.png

Release Phrase: “Rise from the ashes, Umōmaru.”

Shikai: Upon its release, orange-red and teal flames erupt from the base of the tsuba and the fuchi-kashira, bursting forth to cover the whole blade. The fire continues to burn past beyond the original length of the weapon, and when the flames reach right around two meters, they cease and immediately extinguish. Once the smoke clears, it becomes evident that Umōmaru has grown to twice its original length.

Shikai Special Ability: Umōmaru’s ability is to manifest Reiryoku-infused feathers from its blade when it moves, something that Nao has no control over. As the weapon shifts, a trail of these Reiryoku Feathers is left in its wake; if left alone, they will slowly weave back-and-forth as they make their way down until contact is made with an object, physical or spiritual. Upon contact, the feathers will detonate, causing a powerful explosion of disintegrating fire. The size of the explosions have grown over the years, a single feather now able to obliterate a mass the size of a two-story building. There doesn’t seem to be a limit as to how many feathers are generated, manifesting at roughly one for every half-meter the blade travels. The feathers are a half-foot wide and a full foot long, visible to those of spiritual awareness. Thankfully, Nao is impervious to the effects of her own Zanpakutō.

Initially unable to control this power, Nao has since learned to manipulate the feathers with nothing more than her will. She can do so in three ways; the first is to indefinitely postpone the detonation of every feather manifested, which she has termed Enki (延期, Postponement). The second is to detonate the feathers at a whim, called Funka (噴火, Eruption). The third is to move the feathers telepathically, called Ugoki (動き, Movement). The feathers are capable of matching their master’s speed, and can reach as far as her Reiatsu can influence, that being hundreds of miles.

Bankai Name: Tsunenijōshō Umōmaru (羽毛丸, Always Rising Feather Ring)

Bankai: Nao utters that fabled word, and once again the ancient Zanpakutō combusts, the raging fires roaring to surround Nao in an inferno. The flames slowly take shape, for what once seemed to be an insatiable fire, is shown to be the wings of a large phoenix. As the celestial creature rises, its magnificent wings unfurling, Nao is discovered to stand underneath its wake.

It should be noted that the initiation of her Bankai brings about an environmental change, where the sun is inspired to glow brighter than ever. Rainbows glisten across the skies in abnormal quantities, painting both a serene and implausible picture.

The Central 46 has placed strict limitations on Tsunenijōshō Umōmaru's release in both the Soul Society and the World of the Living, due to its potential for mass and indiscriminate destruction.

Bankai Special Ability: Tsunenijōshō Umōmaru brings to life the fabled phoenix in physical form, a majestic creature rising ten meters tall, with a wingspan double that. An amalgamation of corporeal and ethereal flames, the beast possesses immense spiritual energy within, capable of matching its master's speed. When the ancient beast is injured, or at the whim of its master, the phoenix erupts in an enormous pillar of raging flame, incinerating all within its destructive range. The power of the eruption is equivalent to a full Hadō #96. Ittō Kasō (一刀火葬, Single Blade Cremation).

From the ashes of its violent death will rise two phoenixes, their earth-shaking roars declaring the vengeance they seek. This process goes on, two phoenixes reborn for every one that erupts, until the world itself is reduced to ash.

In addition, she gains two additional abilities as named: Chōshinsei and Saisei.

Chōshinsei (超新星, Supernova)

Nao sacrifices all existing phoenixes, making their fiery life essences her own. Upon her back the enormous wings of Umōmaru sprout, forming a dazzling display of fiery excellence for twenty meters over both her left and right. These newly formed appendages resemble those of her Zanpakutō spirit, an otherworldly mix of corporeal and ethereal flames that signal the commencement of a terrible and irreversible calamity.

The absorbed volatile energy functions as the catalysts to Chōshinsei, forcing all of her Reiryoku to combust at once, causing a cataclysmic supernova. The time it takes from ability activation to detonation is in her complete control, the fastest possible simply seconds. The initiation of this process bears a visible cue, both physically and spiritually, that she cannot hide; her wings take on a brightness that continues to increase in intensity until she can no longer be seen, and then the world is reduced to ash. Once the ability is activated, she is unable to reverse it. The power behind this ability is indescribable, currently able to take out in a hellish blaze a mass the size of an entire Rukongai sub-section: all 80 Districts. This ability is kamikaze, a final suicidal attempt to stop her enemies.

Saisei (再生, Rebirth)

This ability represents her Zanpakutō’s true power: to rise anew from the ashes of her demise. When Nao is dealt a fatal blow, she, alongside her Zanpakutō, will immediately disintegrate into ash. All of Nao’s essence, her soul and DNA, is present in this Tengoku no Wakagaerihai (天国の若返り灰, Heavenly Rejuvenating Ashes). From these ashes she will rise to live again.

Tengoku no Wakagaerihai’s purpose is singular and absolute, and as such if it is scattered, it will accumulate on its own accord over time. Once enough of it is gathered in one location, the Fukkatsu no Gishiki (復活の儀式, Ritual of Rebirth) will commence. This entire process can take weeks to years, depending on a few factors: how much of Tengoku no Wakagaerihai was scattered, how powerful the Reiatsu of the enemy is that slew her, and how much residual Reiatsu persists in the environment. The foundational principle of this ability is similar to regeneration, but on a heightened level, and so it does not affect the soul cycle. Nao will be reborn weaker than her previous self as a result of the direct trauma incurred to the soul.

Nao has been reborn only once before.

  • Every time Nao goes through Saisei (再生, Rebirth), like a phoenix, is reborn a new entity. This means that she may possesses characteristics different to her previous self. These differences are programmed down to her DNA, the variations possibly reflected in her appearance or disposition.
  • Memory for Nao is a delicate thing, often recalling events of her previous self(s) in distant hazes. She's prone to forget some specifics, while remembering others, consequently encountering bouts of déjà vu.
  • No soul currently alive, except for the Captain Commander Higen Kagayaki and the Central 46, is aware of her Bankai ability, Chōshinsei (超新星, Supernova). That said, absolutely no one is aware of Saisei (再生, Rebirth)...yet.
  • Nao's aesthetic is based on Baiken, a playable character from the Samurai Showdown games.

Personal Relationships

NaoShiz.png

Shizuka Hyouzoku

A fateful encounter with the then seated officer of the 10th Division, Shizuka Hyouzoku, would culminate in an unshakeable bond lasting beyond the lifetime of even the oldest Shinigami. The ever work-averse Shizuka would leave his post to wander the Seireitei in hopes of coming across something…anything, outside of the mundane to catch his interest, and most importantly, to avoid responsibility. It seemed that lady luck shined upon him, for one day, he came to find a well-endowed, red-headed Shinigami.

Although dutiful and always beholden to her responsibilities, Nao would never reject any opportunity for company. As she took but a moment’s rest beside a quiet pond near Sokyoku Hill, after an arduous debrief of matters surrounding the ever-present rebellion within the Rukongai, she was approached by a green-haired, and rather handsome, Shinigami. Immediately she noticed an immense potential within Shizuka, a power deep within, a drive that could never be quelled, and one that held a strong pull like an invisible gravitational attraction. The two seated officers hit it off, joking, laughing, reminiscing on times past, and vowing to meet at this same place every so often.

These promised meetings occurred over centuries, until the inevitable, that which Nao knew without a shadow of doubt would come. Upon Shizuka’s promotion to Lieutenant, their meetings became all but non-existent, for the needs of Naruki City transcended that of their relationship.

It was only after Nao’s promotion to Captain, and Shizuka’s thereafter, that their relationship rekindled. Both of them now at the helm of their respective Divisions, the two have become prominent within each others’ lives, their fateful and never broken bond surpassing that which came before.

Nao awoke in the Soul Society a confused child, a young soul blind to where and what she was. With no recollection of her life as a mortal, she wandered the narrow streets and dilapidated slums of District 57, Jigokukairō (地獄回廊, Hell's Corridor) in the Southern Rukongai. Aptly named, the temperatures of this District were consistently recorded at higher than average, especially when compared to those surrounding it. This phenomenon has been attributed to the remnant radiation taken root deep within the environment, left behind by Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni’s Bankai, Zanka no Tachi.

Folklore handed down over hundreds of years spoke of a calamitous war, where the first Captain Commander unleashed the Bankai of the most destructive Zanpakutō in recorded Soul Society history. According to the tales, Jigokukairō (地獄回廊, Hell's Corridor) was ground zero, the epicenter of where the mighty blade was brought forth. The citizens of this dehydrated district were forced to adapt their lifestyle to the heat; their manner of dress, the habits they formed, the personality traits seeded deep within: their entire being influenced by the inextinguishable effects of Ryūjin Jakka.

Whatever small bit of timidness Nao awoke with was quickly shed as she weaved through lessons of survival on the scorching cobblestone of Jigokukairō’s streets, gaining a reputation within her neighborhood as the Kyōretsuna Gaki (強烈なガキ, Feisty Brat). The young and once gentle burnette took on characteristics typically attributed to the personification of fire, namely that of aggression and power. Mere years it took for her stomach to growl with hunger, a precursor to the fast-growing Reiryoku within her, seemingly multiplying by day and night. By now a part of a rag-tag gang of young hungry souls, Nao’s accomplishments included theft, burglary, intimidation, and even killing. Together their might was unmatched, to which they conquered Jigokukairō and made it their own…until their criminality brought on the ire of the Mad Dog Asakura. He ravaged the District and single-handedly crushed their attempts of resistance, many of Nao’s “brothers and sisters” dying in the battle, her and the rest of the survivors escaping to District 58, Kuroihashi (黒い橋, Black Bridge).

From there she went on to encounter all sorts of interesting characters, souls that would leave a mark upon her both physically and otherwise, until she was persuaded to join the Gotei 13.

After her ascension to the ranks of the Seventh Division, an irony to which Nao came to cherish, she took to rebuilding Jigokukairō (地獄回廊, Hell's Corridor). A theory of particular intrigue for her, after learning the nature of her Zanpakutō, was the possibility that her environment, that which was subjected to the influence of Ryūjin Jakka, had gone so far as to mold her own soul. An unsubstantiated hypothesis to this day.

Notable Features: In particular, nothing about Koji’s physical appearance is too eccentric or notable. Among the beautiful, he is subpar, and among the bestial he cannot be counted. He is as plain as they come; from his shaggy black-blue hair to his crystalline-esque silver eyes. Even his build is nothing impressive; by no means a midget, but by no means taller either. While others may have more sculpted forms, Koji is without much definition beyond rudimentary muscle from maintaining a general physique fit for serving as a soldier and passing his physical tests.

Beyond his physical appearance though, he can be considered notable for two particular pieces of his wardrobe. The generally plain and uniform Koji can always be found adorning his signature head wrapping. The cotton-esque black wrapping ensnares his forehead and ears, and has done so since his time before the Academy leaving many to conspire about what is beneath. Beyond that particular head accessory, would be the labcoat Koji adorns for his duties as a scientist in the Research & Development Institute. The eccentric part of his lab coat is simply that it is two sizes too big, creating a sense of smallness for any already unimposing man. The rationale behind this, per Koji, is simply that the oversized nature is more comfortable to him.

One last thing does exist within notable features of this otherwise plain person, and this feature itself is purely opinionated and contested often-- If one were to look with great scrutiny at the man, they would find that his bone structure and particular coloration indicate that as a soul born he could potentially be in relation to the fallen Noble house of the Shiba.

Personality: Koji is wholeheartedly the most genuine scumbag that has adorned the uniform of a Shinigami. Despite his immense intelligence and deep passion for learning, his self-obsession and lean to self-servience has created a monster among men. Throughout the duration of his life, he cannot recall a moment he acted for another or put the greater good before HIS greater good. Now, this doesn’t mean he isn’t a half decent actor. As a narcissist, he is more than capable of putting on the airs of empathy, but the conversation will always find its way back to him as the main topic. He just genuinely has no interest in other people… and if he does display an interest in someone, that is generally perceived among those most familiar with his psychological profile as a blaring red alarm.

While he is obviously an immoral and crackpot scientist who loves to experiment on the unprotected lowlife far beyond the Seireitei’s watchful gaze, he is also understanding of his particular restraints and limitations. His bonafide physical weakness when compared to those shining stars around him has developed a hyper vigilance that borders the paranoid. Even among his own squad, he trusts no one & assumes they seek the fruits of his research if not his outright demise.

Koji, despite all his faults, isn’t without his merit. His desire to survive & continue to pursue his own interests has him act for the good of his benefactor, the Gotei Thirteen, hence his development of different pharmaceutical products that temporarily embolden and strengthen the average soldier. It is his genuine belief that as long as he does not make too many big waves, and continues to develop different chemical agents & occasional technologies that benefit the Shinigami, that he can continue to research unabated by the consequences for his heinous actions.

Whether he is on duty, in battle, or walking through the slums of distant districts, Koji is constantly aware of his surroundings. While not the sort to engage in fights too often, Koji is known for being excessively brutal with those weaker & quick to play possum with those even slightly stronger than himself. Among his generation from the academy, he was actually even tormented by his classmates-- they quickly picked up on his problematic behavior & referred to playing possum as “playing Koji” which obviously incensed his ego and haunts the Shinigami to this day.

Koji is eerily manic nearly all hours of the day, and many wonder if this Soulborn has ever actually slept a day in his life. His anxious and energetic twitching during conversations often leads many to wonder if this man may be tweaking, having a stroke, or simply generally broken on a psychological level. While he can seem kind, and frankly gentle even, those who know Koji understand that whatever trauma has infected his ego that it is beyond a reason of a doubt rotted him to his core. Kindness from Koji is again a red flag, something that often means either he isn’t really paying too much attention to your existence or worse… he’s paying too much attention for reasons best left to his experiments to explain.

In truth, despite his sinister and cruel nature, Koji is technically a decent soldier. He understands when to act on his impulses, and when to grit his teeth and endure. He is not the type to challenge the strong, he is not the type to challenge authority openly, and above all else he is not the type to let an opportunity pass him by. His immense intelligence, while helping him act on darker impulses, has also allowed him to remain vigilant in his processes, operations, and actions. Some mad men are sloppy, other mad men can become intoxicated by their emotions. Koji is a third, lesser observed madmen, one who can compartmentalize the monster until just the right moment.

Some have investigated Koji before, and most people who have observed him in his role as a Scientist in the Twelfth Division claim that despite his obvious cowardice (which they seemingly excuse due to him not being a combatant) & loathsome jitteriness, that in general he seems harmless. Nothing more than a chihuahua, his bark may seem concerning, but from what they can tell his bite is generally harmless.

Reiryoku Level:
Vast Spiritual Power
Originally just as mediocre and plain as Koji in almost every other regard. The young researcher unfortunately afforded himself an unsightly curse when experimenting with a number of different pharmaceutical products he’d been developing over the years. His once average spiritual power has now been unnaturally mutated into such immensity, that it can be counted among the heroic and mighty, two words that by no means describe the meek & self-satisfying Koji. While the side effects have created an enormous fission of his natural force by mere accident, an effect that despite decades of research cannot be duplicated, he does use a cocktail of medications he synthesized to effectively lobotomize and drastically reduce his own level to a basic nature. However, in the event that he is unable to ingest his medication in a timely manner… his nature will soon become unbound and the monstrous force spiraling uncontrolled. When unchained, per say, Koji will generally suffer from a mindless and primitive mindset; regressing into a beast that is simply hunting the nearest and biggest energy to conquer indiscriminately whether they be friend or foe.

Sensing Reiryoku:
Basic
Understandably, Koji has a basic understanding of Sensing Reiryoku and has reached a level that he as a Researcher is comfortable with. His abstract and high intelligence has allowed him from the onset of lessons to grasp the concept with immense ease, but also realize that he could potentially utilize others with greater sensitivity or even devices to both supplement and augment his own lower level of sensing hence why he hasn’t spent much time honing the technique beyond this level.
Per his level he is capable of identifying different variant spiritual powers (deliberating differences between Hollows, Shinigami, and etc.). Koji has also displayed a firm understanding of the sensory techniques expected of someone of his particular level. While obviously not a master or expert by any means, as a scientist he doesn’t find it necessary to be able to finely pick apart the monogram of differences in pressures and whatnot or even tracking them across vast distances, especially since he finds that technology and other more combat specialized Shinigami can easily supplement his lack of ability.

Reiryoku Control:
Great Control-
Originally, Koji could be counted among the more feeble in regards to reiryoku control. The scientist would spout theories and charts that supported his bizarre decision of inaction on honing this particular skill. However, after his incident & unfortunate curse of an ever-rising Reiryoku level, Koji attempted a number of holistic and medicinal alternatives to control the maddening force storming inside his very much feeble mortal coil.

In part because of his abstract mind, and his deepening focus on this particular skill due to his deranged status, Koji can now be considered among the greater tiers of Reiryoku manipulators. Even though Koji must now resort to a slew of medications to suppress his monstrous reiryoku, his control has proven itself immensely versatile across the many different arts a Shinigami is expected to perform.

Koji has shockingly demonstrated such fine tuned control of his Reiryoku that he can condense his energy in certain areas to increase the relative durability making punches, slashes, or even gunshots without considerable spiritual force backing them relatively weaker . Koji has displayed such artistinal manipulation of his Kido, using his honed skill to effectively minimize the amount of energy, that Koji is considered a rising star in the realm of Spellcasters. While Koji tends to demonstrate immense tenacity and a growth rate that is both cumbersome and worrisome, his repeated dependence on technology tends to prevent him from scaling greater heights, and such a plague has prevented him from seeing what lay beyond the greatness of his current peak.

Reiatsu:
Specialist
As someone with a skilful control of his medicated version of Reiryoku, Koji can easily be considered among the ranks of a Reiatsu Specialist. He is able to amply and steadily release the lulled energy that he regularly has access to per the terms of his condition. In accordance with his reiatsu he is able to subtly reinforce his own physicality and even effectively bleed into his surrounding reality, on an admittedly limited but controlled scope, his reiatsu effect. As someone who has enough intellect and training from the Academy, Koji as an individual can utilize his Reiatsu with a general abstraction, though he does maintain a very fine concept of his own limitations and the projected outcome of any encounter. In general, as a more tactical person, he will not expend his Reiatsu or utilize certain facets of it if he can perceive his loss regardless of their utilization. As a self-serving person, it is the priory of Koji to survive, so if he knows his exertion of reiatsu is a hapless ploy, he will invest that energy elsewhere.

In general his level as a Specialist is purely based on the preface of his medicated stupor. Without his medication keeping his condition in check, his reiatsu will in a sense burn uncontrollably and while his effects may become more exaggerated than at their Specialist level, the lack of control and regulation makes it very obvious that this is just a blind exertion.

Reiatsu Colors:
Baby blue

Reiatsu Shape:
When Koji begins to exert the true vastness of his spiritual pressure, it will manifest as a massive spiraling tornado of shimmering baby blue energy. While it may seem awe inspiringly beautiful to behold, the violent energy which is manifesting will soon paint a portrait of Hell rather than Heaven with the force it beckons.

When under the influence of his medication, the only sign of a shape in his reiatsu is crackling fits of energy that seem almost lightning-esque in shape and just as brief as the wisps of energy bolt and fade around his person; a testament to the flickering storm that Koji has subjugated with the power of science.

Reiatsu Effect(s):
ASPHYXIA
Reiatsu Type:
Standard Type

Zanjutsu Level:
Swordsman
While by means of Zanpaktou synchronization rate there is no arguing the expert level of Koji, when it comes to the physical element of actual sword fighting the Shinigami falls greatly short of being considered an expert, hence his being declared merely a Swordsman even with his Zanpaktou awakened and named.

Even the utilization of his Zanpaktou when released is purely used for support-type enforcement, and he will never be the type to take a stand as a front-line fighter. While he understands the foot work, methods, and different forms for a number of different swordplay styles, he simply isn’t invested enough to indulge beyond a Swordsman level of proficiency as it does not benefit him or his research per his own understanding. Again a symptom of his own nature and reliance on science, he does not see a need to hone a tool that he will not use often, and finds that with his current level he is satisfied. He can beat back the arrogance of a practitioner, and fend off a low-level Hollow if need be, but as someone uninterested in the hustle & bustle of big battle fields, he doesn’t see a point to grow beyond this point presently.

Known Techniques: Hōzuri

Hohō Level:
Shunpo Practitioner
A mere practitioner of the fabled Speedster arts infamous to Shinigamikind. While his level is mindfully the same as it has been since he graduated the Academy, this isn’t without reason. As a researcher and someone who is not often on the battlefield, Koji does not find it pressing to focus on overcoming this hurdle and pressing himself forward into the next level of understanding in Hohō.

Koji is wholly satisfied with his basic understanding, as again, it allows him to have a basic level that puts him over the uneducated students and underwhelming Hollows of lower levels. Admittedly though while he does want to learn to move faster, his conniving nature and dependency of science has led him to decidedly look towards chemical augmentations to grant him some level of Super Soldier speeds (though admittedly, he has had no such luck producing satisfactory results).

Known Techniques: Flash Step

4fa8e87eb4274a5afd5ac30b67f610db.gif

Hakuda Level:
Hakuda Practitioner
As someone who has graduated from the Academy, it is understandable that Koji could be considered a practitioner. While he does have a firm understanding of the unarmed Shinigami fighting style, it is wholly unlike Koji to utilize anything from the arsenal in a live conflict. As his nature begets him to avoid physical encounters, he would sooner use his understanding of Hakuda purely as a deterrent against a lower level prey, but never even amuse the idea against someone similar or superior in skill to him.

In truth, Koji mainly maintains his current level of Hakuda in the event of any sort of physical test by the Gotei Thirteen, though he also finds that at times practicing certain techniques without a target and purely as a means of focusing on form can be cathartic in the same way yoga is.

Known Techniques: Handstand Dash, Taketonbo, Sandbag Beat (adjusted to his physical level), Kagamibiraki (adjusted to his physical leve), and Gatling Mad Stomping

Kido Skill Level:
Kidō Expert
In regards to the spiritual science of Kido, Koji has found himself an especially useful tool. His immense intellect and abstract formulaic mind has allowed him to obtain a level of Kido that has made him a force to behold when casting spells. Despite his disinterest in joining the Kido Corps. or Fifth Division for that matter, it cannot be denied that Koji is a prodigal talent in regards to his Kido efficiency.

In general, Koji has an understanding on an immense level each spell that he has taken to learn. As a scientific minded person, he has such a fine tuned and methodical process to learning new spells & processes that he even has come to utilize techniques such as “Silent Casting” and even “Double Casting” albeit with halving the spells power with both utilizations. However, as a researcher he is constantly looking for ways to reprogram his process to debug and create a more successful method.

Skills and Abilities:
Prodigal Genius
A mind among minds, in regards to academics Koji of the Ueno has been considered an upstart & record breaking talent. Pushing aside his problematic personality for the moment, during his tenure at the Academy while he did poorly physically (just dredging by enough to qualify for graduation) his scholarly articles and findings consistently broke records & set new precedences. Even his development and process for synthesizing new pharmaceuticals for special war time usage has been documented in the recent annals of history.

Even beyond the realm of pharmaceuticals, his recent work into biological technology has been considered both concerning and awe-inspiring. His development of artificial, but independently living, shikigami called Homunkurusu (lit. Artificial Human) has led many in both the scientific and medical communities to both laud and despise him. While one may think that biological engineering is something that he researched for many years, in truth & terrifying testament to his intelligence and processing powers, he only in the last twenty years began actively researching the field.

Zanpakuto Name: Kigiku (lit. Yellow Chrysanthemum)
Zanpakuto Appearance:
Kigiku when sealed takes the form of a standard sized kusanagi sword, encased in a black enamel like coating, the sealed appearance of Kigiku is without many distinct features; much like it’s owner Koji. From the seemingly perfectly kept scabbard to the pristinely maintained steel of Kigiku’s blade, everything about the Zanpaktou is well manicured. Generally Kigiku can be found within reach of Koji if not cleverly concealed in his oversized lab coats embrace.
Zanpakuto Spirit:
820f8b9d4a514972aaed2dcc3c46ab20.png
In… your mind… is… Ultimate Power…

Within the idyllic fields of his Zanpaktou’s Inner World is a particular hill covered with chrysanthemum golden as the heavenly glow from the sun that seems perpetually stuck overhead. In actuality these flowers rest upon no hill but rather Kigiku itself. Upon being roused, the gargantuan golem will seemingly uproot itself to reveal a form that towers far above anything else within the Inner World. It’s oddly robotic and lifeless voice chilling to hear, and yet Koji finds no merit in much concern over the ancient beast whose very voice demands the entire inner world tremble.

Inner World:
3cc00e7a56471bef8996371edec17038.jpg

A castle afloat in a sky with no land in sight. This ancient yet fantastical world is decrypted, engorged and ensnared with vines & ruination. Abandoned buildings decorated with the signs of a hasty departure centuries ago and accented by the aromas of rot. Occasionally, when wandering through what can only be described as a long deserted village, Koji finds what he can only describe as efigies; tormented stone statues of what seems to be varying people’s final, and seemingly terrifying, moments. Towards the center of this floating castle isle is a thicket of trees which perfectly encircle & enshrine a garden of hills covered with gorgeous golden chrysanthemums.

Release Phrase: “Stagnate, Kigiku”

cdf52d3f61908f4cbc3f26728d9e39b3.png

Shikai:
lovelivesunshine-s2-ep11-scr3.png
Beware the black ball of calamity…

Upon being stirred into Shikai the once brutish and frankly unbefitting katana of which Kigiku sleeps is shed; like a butterfly casting off a cocoon that can no longer define them, Kigiku too shares this sentiment as it evolves. A black sphere no larger than your standard bowling ball is the penultimate visual for Kigiku’s Shikai. Aglow with the mystifying baby blue essence of their wielder, the Zanpaktou is found in the perpetual orbit of Koji. While it does not need to be directly embraced due to the psychic nature of the Zanpaktou itself, it must remain within a twelve foot omnidirectional radius.

Shikai Special Ability: A psychic type Zanpaktou that is misrepresented as an instrument for time manipulation. Upon being released a mighty glistening dome will engulf the area, its size varying in accordance with the will of Koji. Any onlookers who are peering at the dome from afar will notice that within the dome time seems frozen. Not a single person or object stirring in the slightest, but if they were to cross the shimmering slightly opaque golden energy that denotes the boundary of Kigiku's influence they too will become subjected to its true ability... Memory Manipulation.

Any and all within the borders of Kigiku's domain, with the obvious exception of Koji, will lose all their memory from the moment they came under Kigiku's influence. It is due to the lack of memory of those inside, and the misguided observation of a frozen time bubble from outside, that Koji has been able to misrepresent Kigiku as a time-based Zanpaktou.

While few have successfully survived encounters with the awakened Kigiku, from what has been whispered along the grapevine, it would seem that inside the shimmering boundary of Kigiku’s influence the outside world appears just as unmoving as the inside does to onlookers. However, per the ability of Kigiku, they would have no actual recollection inside lest they be stronger than the self-serving and often cowardly conniving Koji; a situation that Koji will likely often avoid-- though even a genius may make mistakes from time to time.

Even upon the dismissal of Kigiku’s Shikai, the time spent within the golden bubble remains out of reach. Certain individuals with reiryoku and reiryoku control far out-classing Koji may be able to reclaim their memories, but those more close to Koji or below in power are damned to the paranoia of lost time.

Biography:
Koji doesn’t have an exciting backstory. He was born to a man who fell for a woman and had a son. It didn’t help his development that this man was the head of a branch family for the once great Shiba tribe, nor did it really help that the woman who would become his mother was a call girl in the lower districts. It was especially a bizarre development for both his parents to die around the time of his birth; his father because of age while his mother because of complications during delivery (though Koji wonders if she didn’t just cop out after realizing she lost her free ride, punching out so she wouldn’t have to be stuck raising a kid alone).

Cut off from his lineage as a Shiba, Koji was raised under the vigilant care of his beloved Uncle Ichirou. While the Ueno clan was not poor, Koji lacked the silver spoon the Shiba clan could have afforded him if Ichirou had let them take the boy. Instead, Ichirou had the Ueno’s personal physician who oversaw the birth report to the Shiba that the mother & child died during the birthing process.

As a child, Koji held a deep and remarkable interest in chemicals. Brewing & concocting nonsensical elixirs from household products found throughout the Ueno estate in the 64th District. It was too the ire of Ichirou though when he found out Koji was having other children ingest them; the boy watching and recording the results, and while Ichirou thought perhaps this was just youthful ignorance, it would become clear that Koji understood experimenting on them was wrong, but did so regardless.

Eventually, as Koji grew, so did his desire to experiment more and more. His appetite, or monster so to speak, grew so large that Ichirou— perhaps as an effort to discipline his nephew— advised him to look into becoming a Soul Reaper. Koji understood his Uncle feared the person he’d become, peddling amateur drugs into the lowest income areas, but he realized that under the banner of the Gotei Thirteen he could expand his knowledge and hone his craft with funding the pitiful middle class Ueno clan could never muster.

While his time in the Academy was mired in scandals, humiliation, and sometimes genuinely humbling beatings, Koji somehow made it out alive. Because of his immense intellect but problematic personality, of the thirteen divisions only one sent an offer to him, though frankly it was the only one he was interested in from the get go. Granted membership into the Twelfth Division and granted his own funding for his research, Koji was ecstatic.

Koji, however, was not an experienced peddler and despite his time manipulating, others had very few instances of direct interactions with dealers of particular wares. While developing a proto-type for a new synthetic spiritual amplification chemical, someone offered a particular chemical to him well below the competition. This dealer was not only seedy, but confessed to being both new in peddling, but also cut this product themselves. In a moment of hubris, Koji took him at his value (which was subhuman in the eyes of Koji) and used the particular cut of product in his experiment.

Koji had used this formula and tested it with so many other souls, and saw a slight hike in their reiryoku, and so with this recently made batch, he indulged himself in the product. The biggest mistake any producer can make. Whoever this dealer was, whatever they cut this product with, it was tainted with something that, when mixed with the rest of his formula, created such an immensely disproportionate effect. The formula should have made Koji’s reiryoku slightly increase, instead he suffered a reaction that monstrously amplified his Reiryoku to where to this day it seems ever expanding. This mutation has become Koji’s Moby Dick, a quest to find what the dealer had cut into this batch, because as Koji found later on… the dealer overdosed on some of Koji’s own products, which Koji had peddled into the slums.

Now a monster who must medicate himself into a stupor, Koji must live with the consequences of his actions and choose to either learn from his vileness & embrace this karmic retribution or delve deeper into his own insidiousness to become something so much more profound & wicked.
