Kaisou Tsunoda (改装角田) is the 3rd Seated Officer of the Fourth Division (四番隊, yonbantai; "Squad 4") in the Gotei 13. Spending time in no other divisions prior to being inducted into Yonbantai, Kaisou’s entire Shinigami career has contributed to his skill as a field and combat medic. The talented young officer has spent a century or more improving in all ways possible to create the beautiful work of art that is his repertoire. Just recently ascending to his seated position, he was taken under the tutelage of Soul Society’s greatest medical mind, Yū Nakamoto.

From outside of the Fourth Division barracks, you can hear the screams and whispers of adorning fans. Women of all shapes, sizes, and colors gather to simply peer through the gates at Kaisou; they speculate what further beauty lies beneath his surgical mask while imagining a life where he is theirs, and theirs alone. The somewhat tall male is most immediately noticeable by his thick locks of iron-blue hair. Loose strands dance along a smooth and silky face lightly dusted in blush, often blown aside by a wayward wind or swept behind perfectly-proportioned ears. The full length of his hair is rarely revealed, fashioned and tied in a thick purple band to keep it out of his way when operating. Beneath his flowing bangs, frozen blue orbs are said to peer directly into one’s heart, the coldest swells of the ocean hiding behind his eyelids. Known to have an unmistakable smile, it is a rarity for Kaisou to be seen with an expression that is any form of somber in nature. The substitution of his hakama for a pair of Harem pants gives him the mobility needed for long days in the hospital or the field, whilst the dark indigo Gi and pink Obi Sash give him the splash of color he desperately needs atop the boring, ugly standard uniform.
Irrefutably vain, cruel; selfish beyond measure. This alone is an image of Kaisou that has been exaggerated and extrapolated, taken from small interactions he has had with strangers and the assumptions of those that have not had the liberty of knowing him personally. Even still, there is truth to all rumors. Kaisou is obsessed with himself; every grain of hair, every spotless ivory tooth. He spends countless hours, days, tending to himself and ensuring that everything about his person is the embodiment of perfection. This includes rigorous workout routines, utilizing a conglomerate of chemicals and products on his face and skin; And the most absolutely imperative part of his day, using Kurotsuchi Sheen. Even when noticing small side effects from the product(s), he is capable of using his own healing expertise to revert any drastic changes. Even still, he deems it a worthy price to pay for the results he receives. An hourly meeting with a mirror is a necessity to secure the success of his daily routine; every single thing must be up to par, worthy of being gawked over. Few can contest his arrogance; often because it is not one of sword or soul, but simply one of self. If someone didn’t know any better, they’d assume he was some type of royalty purely based on the way he carries himself.
It is for every one of these reasons that the man is assumed to be selfish. Those who label him as such, quite obviously ignore his profession. A man responsible for indiscriminately saving countless lives, Kaisou is an empathetic individual with the drive to help clean up any of Soul Society’s messes. He sacrifices his time, at times his sanity, and if need be, his life; as long as it meant the guaranteed recovery and safety of his patient. He feels as though the Fourth Division is where he is meant to be, and the medics there have his respect above all of the other buffoons that wave around their swords all day. The challenges they face and the grueling atmosphere they endure day by day, is a testament to their strength and duty to the Gotei 13. There is a bond, an unmistakable unity, the medical corps are like a family that he has never had.
Others have barked at him for being cruel. Well, that’s not entirely fair. Kaisou is selectively cruel. When off-duty, he is perhaps the most exclusive individual one could know. If one does not meet his standards of beauty, they couldn’t hope to be seen as worthy to share air with him. Kaisou had a flair for the dramatic, and wouldn’t hesitate to make a scene if forced to share space with someone ugly, grotesque, or just beneath his standards as a whole. This is an advanced application of his overbearing obsessive-compulsive disorder. Kaisou takes being a neat freak to levels unbound. Every little thing has to be in order, scrubbed clean, and rendered spotless or he can not confidently live in peace. After operating or treating a patient, Kaisou can not proceed with the next patient until his station is completely sanitized. Luckily, this task is made easy by using his Zanpakuto practically. This cleanse does not stop at pools of blood and specs of dirt, or even having things each slotted into their individual organizing containers; no–this applies also to the company that is kept, the quality of individuals aesthetically that he surrounds himself with. When that balance and preference is disturbed, the blue-haired male can act.. Uncharacteristically. This alone has led to the different views and opinions on the man widely spread throughout the Seiretei. If one has to wonder how Kaisou will eventually treat them, they need only to look in the mirror.
Furthermore, Kaisou’s ability to completely entrance the women of the Seireitei and even the furthest reaches of the Rukongai is no secret. In fact, it has since become the source of his fame. His reputation proceeds him, giving him the nickname of “Koibito-Kun” (恋人, VIZ. “Lover Boy”). Although he is known as a player of sorts, simply due to the number of women he has had small, short-lived entanglements with, he is in fact the perfect gentleman. He is extremely romantic, and charming, as if straight out of a storybook or romance novel. He is capable of committing spontaneous acts that will swoon or pull a smile out of even the sternest and uptight women. Even if he has no romantic interest in a woman, he remains a prolific flirter and will do his damndest to tint his target’s cheeks rose-colored. It is a personal boost to his ego and carries no significance whatsoever. More often than not, he has zero serious implications connected to his words that are often given off in a poetic, Shakespearean cadence. He is not against spewing empty promises or false compliments just to say he made a woman’s day; correction–a beautiful woman’s day.
Kaisou’s pool of reiryoku is considerably large in comparison to his peers, especially taking into account his time before elevating to 3rd Seated Officer. Perhaps it was a tradeoff, a godsend when considering the large amounts of reiryoku needed to truly exploit his zanpakuto to make use of its fullest potential. He is capable of–and often required to–utilize large amounts of reiryoku to perform his duties in the field with maximum efficiency; healing crowds of individuals in a single breath. While for most this would be taxing, exhausting, or outright debilitating, it has become near-second nature for the Combat Medic. Not unlike many others, it was the well of power within him that initiated the poaching of the young male by the Shinōreijutsuin (真央霊術院, Spiritual Arts Academy). While his reservoir of power is considerable and was the catalyst to his induction into the Shin'ō Academy, it was his degree of control that carried him to success, eventual graduation, and even promotion. Honing his control came naturally—at first—and soon transformed into a consistent practice. Learning and understanding his reiryoku and the paths it took through his body, was only further supplemented by studying the anatomy of the soul during his medical training.
All of these efficiencies tie in to a single, prominent skill being honed to perfection; his ability to utilize healing, offensive, and binding kido effortlessly, and in quick succession. His mastered control over his reiryoku is a supplement to its size when compared to those who may have more reiryoku than himself. Capable of “rationing” portions of his reiryoku quite easily, he can compartmentalize and prepare his reiryoku for each individual attack, action, or spell that the medic has meticulously planned for.
As a Medical-Class Shinigami, the ability to notice, identify, and locate spiritual signatures of all kinds is a necessity for success. Most prominently, being able to accurately assess if one's spiritual signature is fading, or close to—is the most useful appropriation of this skill. While others’ Reikaku (霊覚, "Spiritual Sense") can be perceived as an interlinked combination of energies, both close and distant, Kaisou’s is prevalent in flashes of color. Although he cannot appropriately distinguish between different power levels and other innate abilities as easily as his peers, he can however determine how close a given spiritual signature is to death based on a designated color scale. The colors dance along the spectrum, individuals stained in green and blue possess the most current vitality, while those teetering along the purples pinks and reds are considered gravely injured or on their deathbed. Kaisou is no stranger to interacting with Reiraku (霊絡, “Spirit Coils”; "Spirit Ribbons"), either, able to locate and identify their originator with touch, although he takes a bit more time to perform this act than others might.
Tearing the earth asunder, by root and stem, things his reiatsu—when properly released—is capable of doing with little to no effort exerted. However, after the initial burst of release, his spiritual pressure has been known to “relax”. It calms, moving idly around his body like a mix of wind and water, while Kaisou himself is the center of the storm. It is also completely silent, the sound of rippling energy becomes utterly muffled, indistinguishable. In its vibrant pale blue, it is almost blindingly bright, sparkling in any night sky. For those in danger, or perhaps in need of healing or immediate medical attention, it is but a ray of hope that help is near, and that they don’t need to worry. The simple force it carries acts as a barrier or coating used to render low-level kido and spells from inept casters useless. His masterful control over his reiryoku and his spiritual anatomy experience only further contribute to how capable he is of controlling the potency of which his Reiatsu is released. While he can release it, make it known, and cast his beacon widespread for all to see, he can just as easily contain and suppress it, becoming but a feather in the wind, unable to be identified or located by those without the adequate means of uncovering his suppressive veil.
Unlike many others, Kaisou can not permit his reiatsu to react against an opponent maliciously, or destructively. Even the natural embodiment of spiritual pressure which comes as an overbearing and–comparatively gravitational–force, is absent. Instead his reiatsu has been described as a day on the beach, the feeling of the water crashing against the sand as a shallow wave washes over your toes. It is serene, without being euphoric. It is like being wrapped in a cotton hug, in a bed of clouds, weightless and burdenless for those who feel its effects. Reminiscent of a cool breeze on a hot summer day, it is hardly ever noticed at all, though individuals with an acute sense will be able to separate its effects from the weather.
When choosing to formulate a shape with his Reiatsu, it has often started out as an amorphous blob, shapeless and baseless, until it truly manifests as a giant-jellyfish-like apparition. It encompasses Kaisou as a whole and remains close to his person as opposed to towering over him like other reiatsu appearances. At his feet, its tentacle-like protrusions dance in a delayed fashion, as if bound by the weight of water. While his reiatsu and of course its shape radiate an indistinguishable pale blue, streaks of cyan and violet can be seen upon closer inspection. His reiatsu as a whole looks and flows like a pool of iridescent, sparkling water.
Because of his Reiatsu’s appearance along with the manifestation of his zanpakuto, Kaisou was aptly dubbed, Kurage (海月, VIZ. “Jellyfish”).
While Kaisou takes pride in cleaning up messes of all kinds, when it comes to creating them he’d rather avoid that altogether. It is no secret that zanjutsu, even in its most precise form, is known to paint the battlefield red. Kaisou loathes this and takes all measures to ensure that his battles are fought and won as cleanly as possible. While he is in complete control of how he chooses to conquer his enemies, he knows that in any case, battle is unpredictable, and sometimes it simply cannot be helped. Though, just because he dislikes the art form, that does not eliminate his practice of it. In fact, when it comes to training or sparring, that is when Zanjutsu becomes a beautiful work of art, a dance of sorts, without the mess that comes from a real battle or fight to the death. Because of this, Kaisou is actually a formidable swordsman, despite his reluctance to show it. His movements are not as stoic and disciplined as some of the more accomplished swordsmen, but instead a combination of twists and turns, shifting his weight loosely whilst wielding his zanpakuto with one hand. While it is proven that wielding your weapon with both hands offers greater results, Kaisou much prefers the speed and unpredictability that his unique style offers. He may not have the precision or skill to easily bisect his foes, but it is much more within his nature to bombard his opponent with a storm of blinding, shallow cuts–should he choose to take that route.
Known Techniques: Senmairoshi
The healers of the Fourth Division are often mistaken, undermined, and assumed to be inept in all things outside of their designation. While many other divisions act as patrols, scouts, glorified guards or bodyguards, The Fourth Division Medics are constantly at work, constantly putting the broken pieces back together. After graduating the Shin’o academy they are thrust into an additional training regiment, meant to ensure they can be relied on to save the lives of the countless shinigami that populate the Seireitei. Besides learning the standard healing techniques essential to performing their daily job functions, what’s most important is being able to cross vast distances to rush to people’s aid. Considering it takes a full ten days to traverse from one Seireitei gate to another, becoming as proficient as possible in hoho, and minimizing the steps between points ‘A’ and ‘B’ became a priority. After the Captain Commander’s executive order to increase the Fourth Division's presence in the World of the Living, this training regiment only increased in ferocity; they had to be sure that the medics deployed wouldn’t be considered dead weight, and could do their job efficiently, appropriately, and with haste.
Kaisou himself has always had quiet and calculated movements. As light as a feather, and as swift as the wind, he is capable of covering great distances with ease, and without tiring at that. Never losing focus or shifting his intention outside of getting to his destination, he has become a prolific practitioner of one of the many Zankensoki arts. As talented as he is, he has not been—at least yet—able to truly master the art and learn an assortment of techniques that comes along with said mastery.
Known Techniques: Shunpo
Although he is in elite physical shape for his own conceited reasons, Kaisou is near-completely inept when it comes to the Art of White Hits. Hakuda at times can be the most savage of all the arts, and perhaps just as—if not even more–messy than Zanjutsu. The toughest of Hakuda combatants are capable of punching directly through their opponents, driving their fists through blood and innards. It only took seeing something similar a single time for Kaisou to offer his sentiment: “No Thanks.”— He wouldn’t dare partake in something as savage as this, and would much rather prefer to avoid a direct physical altercation altogether. If he is forced into a battle of martial arts, however, he is more likely to utilize a barrage of palm strikes. With an open palm, he feels as if he is limiting the possibility of mess, while also initiating a push-like motion to get distance between him and his assailant. Even still, because of his physical profile, these palm strikes have been said to carry a considerable amount of force, able to knock the wind out of most opponents with ease.

When it comes to Kidō, perhaps Kaisou’s vanity as well as his love and obsession for all things beautiful has finally worked in his favor. The man has slaved over a multitude of texts and information related to the Demon Arts, with the sole purpose of becoming capable enough to cast such beautiful spellwork himself. What started as an infatuation, grew into love. What began as studying, turned into effortless ingestion of information and incantations.
One could easily point out just how much of an oddity Kaisou is. Given his ability to utilize Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, Incantation Abandonment; Viz "Destruction Chant"), one would think that they would hardly ever hear an incantation from the man. Despite his ability to utilize most if not all of his spells without incantation, he often purposely elects to use the incantation for the sole reason of enjoying the poetic cadence of the words. The way they come together and form a Haiku of sorts, is a great precursor or opening act before he casts his beautiful spell. It is for this same reason, that these incantations make Kaisou like a chef in the kitchen—utilizing every single ingredient—it is not unlike Kaisou to also implement Nijū Eishō (二重詠唱, Twofold Incantation; Viz "Double Destruction Chant") into his arsenal. Through a combination of spells he can produce something even more visually stunning, capable of weaving a multitude of Kido spells together at once to assault his foes with. Most commonly, he would choose to subtly imbue a restraining spell with one of destruction, allowing him to make quick work of an enemy once they’ve been ensnared.
One of Captain Nakamoto’s quotes comes to mind when considering how often Kido is used as opposed to Kaisou’s actual weapon; "Kidō is the best way for me to get my hands dirty... without my actual hands getting dirty”. No one is in agreement more than he, who has put perhaps one-hundred times the amount of time into Kidō than the next Zankensoki art. His destructive spells create a work of art, beautiful cataclysms that only the earth itself can replicate. Whilst his restraining spells and others capture their targets in lights as bright as the stars in the night sky. His masterful control of his Reiryoku allows him to utilize a large number of spells before tiring, even in comparison to other masters. Many often discount the man’s intelligence due to his vanity when in truth Kaisou is an obsessive planner, and this is no different when it comes to the usage of his Kidō Spells. More often than not, he has already decided, calculated, and laid out an assortment of spells that will be useful given the current situation. As a result, he compartmentalizes and delegates reiryoku for each spell before they are even cast, masterfully using the Demon Arts constantly while in combat without taxing his spiritual reservoir.
His love for the art even led him to the forbidden fruit, in the form of beautiful spells that were not permitted to be used under the Seireitei’s laws. What’s more enticing than a rebel; a man that has teetered the line between that which is accepted and that which is frowned upon? Just the thought of a forbidden spell suddenly makes it more appealing, leading Kaisou down the rabbit hole of discovering what he could about a plethora of them. Additionally, Kidō is an outlet for his creativity, and he often takes inspiration from interesting individuals he encounters, as seen with his creation of many of his Kido spells, one specifically inspired by a friend, Tōsu Shohei.
Known Techniques: Kaisou knows nearly all spells, but will only admit to knowing as well as using the spells that he himself has considered “beautiful”. This is applicable for both Hadō and Bakudō alike.

Perhaps most importantly, as a member of The Fourth Division, and perhaps as one of the most profound medics in all of Soul Society, Kaisou’s love for Kido does not end when Kaidō (回道, Turn Way) enters the picture. Kaisou has captured what it is to be a true healer on the most profound spiritual levels, looking at every injured friend or ally as a puzzle to be put back together. He finds the most enjoyment in repairing lost limbs or dealing with severe burns. He is also capable of restoring multiple targets' reiryoku to levels that allow them to get back in the fight, while also mending any injury they may have sustained. While these things can also be done by, or with his Zanpakuto, he is often using all of his healing abilities in tandem, making him one of the most useful healers in all of Soul Society. While he has become so elite in the area of healing others, this has only further amplified his ability to heal himself. He is capable of utilizing Kaidō on himself seamlessly. When used in conjunction with his Zanpakuto the man becomes nigh-unkillable, capable of still fighting even if he is but a walking corpse. No matter if he is missing one, or multiple limbs he has been known to fight through it with the aid of his healing abilities with no trouble at all.
His same creativity for the creation of both Hadō and Bakudō alike also extends to his ability to create Kaidō spells, having manufactured one or Healing Kidō (治療用鬼道, chiryōyō kidō; Viz "Healing Spiritual Arts") of his own. When searching for a cure for his friend Tosu’s own Angō Seishinbyō (暗号精神病; “Crypto-Spirit Disease; Mysterious Spiritual Disease”), Kaisou’s medical prowess only increased with the amount of knowledge he was ingesting; searching under every rock for any possible cure, the man uncovered every secret there is to know of restoration. To his own disappointment–however–he did not find a cure for his friend, though continues to treat him regularly while he insists on maintaining the search.
Skills and Attributes: Human Anatomy Studies, Unnerving Arrogance
Human Anatomy Studies
A requirement for all members of the Fourth Division; Shinigami must fully understand the anatomy and physiology of Shinigami, and seated members must as well understand the functions of humans and hollows alike as if they were their own.
Unnerving Arrogance
It is unknown where such arrogance was born, or for what reason Kaisou is so obsessed with himself. What is known, however, is how much it has been known to deter enemies. Both a gift and a curse, his arrogance allows him to be hard-headily confident in any and all situations. This allows him to perceive every enemy as beneath him, every attack or injury as recoverable or avoidable. He constantly feels as if he has a leg up on his opponents as if he is always two steps ahead. While this can frustrate some enemies who want to wear down his spirit and find it utterly impossible, this same arrogance has also been known to cause him to become overconfident and make a mistake.
Inventions & Inherited Techniques: Chiryōyō Kidō, Tsukimi, Jakago, Kokonotsu Inu
Chiryōyō Kidō (治療用鬼道, 'Healing Kidō'; VIZ. "Healing Spiritual Arts")
These spells do not have known numbers or incantations to cast, and simply heal the target. As the user holds his/her hands above the patient's wounds, his/her palms glow with green spiritual energy to facilitate healing. When one heals with regular healing kidō, they perform Reiatsu restoration first. By doing so, one can attempt to recover the physical body using the patient's restored Reiatsu and the healer's external Reiatsu. Therefore, restoring the Reiatsu when the physical body is in a fully healed state is no trouble at all.
Shōreikōsō (奨励構想, 'Plan of Inspirational Encouragement' VIZ. Encouragement Plan) ––– A healing spell similar to Seimeikasseihō, however the amount of damage that is restored is also bestowed on the patient as a one-time shield to nullify damage equal to the sustained injury. Upon its initial cast, the spell memorizes the source of damage and further reinforces the afflicted area to prevent similar damage from occurring once more. This ensures an attack of equal force to be rendered ineffective and allows the target less downtime to recover and grants more time to plot a counterstrike. This spell expends more reiryoku and takes longer to cast, due to its increased effectiveness.
Gyakutai (虐待, 'Abjuration', VIZ. Shield Oath) ––– A healing spell that can also be classified as a supplementary spell. This spell uses the practitioner's reiryoku to create a Reiryoku Pact (霊力協定, Reiryokukyōtei) with a singular target. As a result, all damage that either party undergoes, is dispersed in half with the other party receiving the other portion of the damage. The reiryoku pact can only be ended by the original caster, and is often used when treatment is unable to be administered for the time being. However, this same concept also applies to any healing received as well, with the other party also receiving half the healing that is administered.
Jakago (蛇籠; ‘Cage filled with rocks’; VIZ. “Cage filled with stone”)
This bakudo spell creates a cage that changes in size depending on the target(s), Once inside the cage, larger or heavier opponents will find it to be an unbreakable seal, while those smaller in size will be able to treat the cage like a cardboard box. To something comparable in weight to that of a Gillian (最下大虚 (ギリアン), girian; "Lowest Great Hollow"), this barrier would equate to about twenty of Danku stacked against one another.
Kokonotsu Inu (九つ犬, 'Nine Dogs'; VIZ. "Nine Hounds")
Nine wooden pillars erect from the ground, each standing about twelve feet high and three feet wide to surround the given area in which the spell was cast’. Atop each pillar lies a singular, green flame flickering vibrantly in a circle around the caster. Seven of the dog-shaped pillars are said to represent the chakras, whilst the remaining two represent the physical body and soul. The Nine Dogs have been described as Kaisou as a “self-manufactured death sentence”, the ultimate sacrifice in exchange for limited immortality. While within the confines of the spell, each flame represents life itself; should the user be struck down, a flame will be extinguished and the caster will find themselves restored of their vitality. With the final flame acting as the final chance. The spell is primarily used as an avenue to buy as much time as possible, at the cost of one’s life. Considering, regardless of if the user is actually killed or not, the flames themselves will burn out in time as well, leaving them condemned to the fate of death the moment they choose to use the spell at all. Kaisou understands that should anyone know of this spell’s existence, it will undoubtedly be considered forbidden. However, he has no problem with this–knowing that if he were to use it, he won’t be alive to face the consequences of going against the laws.
Tsukimi (夜桜, 'Moon-Viewing'; VIZ. "Inner Reflection")
A technique created while active in the Kido Corps and now regarded as one of Yū's greatest achievements in the Kaidō field–which he inevitably taught Kaisou—Tsukimi allows the doctor to communicate and understand his patients' on a much more deeper level. Initially, this spell was invented with the intention of feeling the pain of his patients, allowing him to become an expert at diagnosing and treating them in a moment's notice. This later became useless once gained more in-depth knowledge of anatomy, now able to detect any anomalies in his patients with his eyes alone.
Now what came was a more psychological connection; This kidō technique allows the user to literally sense and experience a person's emotions and feelings through mere touch. The angel is capable of discovering and bearing the weight of even the deepest traumas, otherwise unknown to all, from just a few seconds of exposure. He has also shown the ability to manipulate emotions to a degree, using this to cheer up an otherwise sad individual or more likely, to efficiently calm an enraged Shinigami by influencing them to be less hostile. While the user is unable to control direct movement, they do have the power of manipulating consciousnesses, able to quickly sedate someone if needed to the point of being registered as comatose and has even shown the ability to delve into victims' memories-- and to a degree, able to erase them over time. Individuals with stronger willpower (typically, Captain level or above with a mastery in Kidō) are the hardest minds to invade as it requires constant physical contact with the target; Stronger subjects are also able to nullify this power partially, left to be in a half-conscious state at best. Conversely, the user can just as easily awake people from comas, however, this has shown to sometimes not be the best action as other body functions sometimes don't follow suit.
Equipment: Company Relief Bag, Denreishinki, Gigai
Company Relief Bag — A standard assistance kit that all shinigami of the fourth division possess, it is essentially an advanced first-aid kit stashed with medical supplies, pills, potions, homemade concoctions, antidotes, ointments, and herbs to treat a variety of injuries, afflictions and life-threatening illnesses.
Gigai (義骸, "Faux Body") — After Fourth Division was tasked with going to the World Of The Living frequently, Kaisou adapted to using his Gigai rather quickly. As opposed to a standard school uniform that comes with a blazer and pant–or for women, a blazer and skirt–Kaisou elects to instead use the appearance of a private school uniform. A thick navy blue sweater is buttoned fully over a white collared shirt. On his lower half are thin gray slacks, while he has a pair of soft loafers over his feet with no socks.
Denreishinki (伝令神機, Divine Messenger Machine; "Soul Pager") — While many are given Denreishinki when it is decided they will be consistently going on assignments to the Living World, Kaisou had his far before then. His intentions with the device were simply taking selfies, as well as posting on Flutter as frequently as possible. Occasionally he may choose to watch one of Captain Yugure’s videos but that is a rare occurrence. Kaisou’s model of the Denreishinki seems to be the newest of the new, perhaps the only one with a purple shell in the entirety of Soul Society. Kaisou is not often found without this device on his person.
Zanpakuto Appearance: En-You Souji takes shape as your standard Katana with a lotus-shaped tsuba, adorned and clamored in the most spotless of silvers. Its hilt is wrapped in a washed, indigo cloth bound tightly to the metal beneath it, offering an extremely capable grip. The blade itself carries a somewhat cobalt hue, kissed at its edge by gleaming white steel. The scabbard—which is often settled tightly within his pink obi sash—is an unmistakable amethyst. Its vibrant purple color separates it from most Zanpakuto, giving the weapon what Kaisou protests to be the most beautiful combination of colors.
En-You Souji is a spirit unlike any other. The eccentric old man does not don the normal whites and grays that often come with his apparent wisdom. Instead, his head of hair, his extremely long goatee, as well as free-flowing mustache and brows are all composed of a current of sparkling-blue water. The water itself looks magical to the touch, glowing with streaks of lavender, blue and cyan alike. With each parting of his lips a smile of grandeur reveals itself and all its glory. Each pearly white shines spotlessly, no flaw to be found in any detail of the man. He wears a large, dark coat that expands into a scalloped, bright silver collar. The dramatic coat seems to be extremely important to him, as it is not unlike him to get uncharacteristically upset if something were to happen to it; a rip, a tear, or even a single drop of blood or dirt will send En-You Souji into a frenzy about his attire.
Kaisou has often described his Zanpakuto spirit as one of, if not the most annoying being the world has to offer. The old man is obnoxious, constantly high-spirited, and seems to be obsessive in every form of the word. Ironically, the similarities between his Zanpakuto spirit and himself are all the things that Kaisou seems to hate the most. When interacting with his wielder, En-You Souji pretends to know absolutely everything. However, hidden beneath the facade of the all-knowing lies actual wisdom; small gems of knowledge that not only assist Kaisou in his daily life but also subtly enhance the bond between the two, untapping Kaisou’s potential to wield his zanpakuto effectively. En-You Souji has also shown an obsession with youth and has even, somehow, digested large amounts of pop culture to make up his mannerisms and vernacular. He is often caught using outdated, cringe-worthy slang while striking poses the common youth would simply dub as ‘lame’. Kaisou has made it painstakingly clear that if anyone else was to ever–hypothetically–step foot into his Inner world the embarrassment would be endless.
En-You Souji’s inner world is an extremely peaceful forest at the foot of a small mountain range. There is a multitude of waterfalls, clearings, flowerbeds, or thick fields of tall grass for one to galavant through should one choose to adventure and explore. At the edge of the forest is a beach, where waves crash against the sand, and the sound of sea birds can be heard without actually ever catching a glimpse of a single one. The world seems to always be in a state of thick humidity as if the rain has just passed or was about to occur at any moment. When the “rain” does begin, the water does not fall in its normal, small droplet form. Instead, a countless amount of bubbles fall from the sky; as the sunlight catches each of them it casts rainbow shadows across the entire landscape.
"Scrub, En-You Souji. . .”
Shikai:
In its Shikai form, En-You Souji (遠洋掃除, "Deep-Sea Cleaning"; VIZ. “Deep-Sea Scrubbing”) abandons its tsuba. The normal katana blade thickens and expands, adopting a curvature similar to that of a Scimitar or Cutlass. The Kashira warps and changes, growing in size while its interior becomes hollowed out in the shape of a perfect circle. From that same circular ring bubbles seem to spawn endlessly, littering the battlefield–or operating room–with the product of his shikai. Closer inspection would reveal the transformation of some of these bubbles. Maintaining their size and even their translucency, the bubbles change to mimic jellyfish-like creatures of different shapes; each unique in their distinct makeups and patterns.
Shikai Special Ability: Shiobana Benikurage (紅海月塩花; "Immortal Jellyfish of Purifying Salt"; VIZ. "Salt-Water Jellyfish of Endless Cleansing") is the name of En-You Souji’s primary ability. This permits the Zanpakuto to create a near-endless amount of bubbles, varying in overall shape as they are spawned. Shortly after they are created, some of them transform their appearance into that of a Jellyfish-like creatures, floating ominously around Kaisou. These Jellyfish—not unlike the bubbles themselves—can appear in a plethora of sizes. Some have been seen on a minuscule scale, only the size of a common pond leech. While others have been created to mimic the size of a large man. Their size directly correlates to the efficiency of their usage as well as their function. As a result, spawning the larger Jellyfish consumes a much larger portion of Kaisou’s own Reiryoku.
The primary function and usage of the Zanpakuto is to employ the Jellyfish as “cleaners”. They are capable of scrubbing allies completely clean of all impurities; This includes poisons, toxins, illnesses, and any other affliction otherwise curable. While those specific ailments are internal, the Jellyfish are also capable of mending external wounds. Large flesh wounds are considered a simple task, while amputations and severances can be repaired with a bit more time; even before the procedure is completely finished, Kaisou is capable of mending the apparent pain that any individual may be experiencing, allowing them to be functional at a time where they would be otherwise debilitated. Those who have had their spiritual reserves emptied will find solace in being graced by En-You Souji, as Kaisou’s on reiryoku is extended to aid in replenishing theirs. When one has been completely replenished their very skin even becomes shiny. The sparkle and gleam like a freshly-waxed floor, spotless and free of any ailments.
Unbeknownst to most—excluding probably one singular male—The bubbles as well as the jellyfish they become are capable of more than just cleansing allies of their impurities and injuries. Kaisou has never opted to use his Zanpakuto offensively or for harm, but it was made apparent after several centuries of connecting with his Zanpakuto that he could very well do so. When used against an enemy—or at the very least someone who Kaisou has deemed to be such—the jellyfish instead cleanse said enemy of traits they consider valuable. This includes physical strength, speed, stamina, and even reiryoku at a slow pace. In the face of his shikai, the strong become weak, the fast becomes slow, and the spiritually rich are forced to face their own inferiority.
Henrikyousei (片利共生; “Commensalism”, VIZ. “Symbiotic Giving”, “One-Sided”)
To normally mend a large plethora of injuries or more serious injuries, there is often a multitude of Jellyfish working on a single individual. On a rare occasion—perhaps if an ally has sustained severe injuries and wishes to continue fighting against the foe that inflicted them—Kaisou will employ just a singular jellyfish. As opposed to the normal scrubbing of its tentacles to wipe away all the impurities, it will instead latch directly onto the said individual, unable to be removed by normal means. While latched, it is constantly repairing the individual’s body, imbuing them with both energy and vigor. They are capable of having wounds healed as they are inflicted, as well as being gifted Reiryoku directly from Kaisou himself. This ability is famed for allowing allies to fight well beyond their limits, and ensure they continue to cheat death under his watch. As its usage suggests, this takes a massive toll on Kaisou as a price. But more often than not, the man is willing to sacrifice himself and his own health in order to successfully perform it.
Shabondama (シャボン玉; “Soap Bubbles” VIZ. “Cleaning Orbs”)
While the jellyfish take most of the visual attention of En-You Souji’s Shikai, they are but a product if not one in the same with the bubbles spawned from the Zanpakuto’s kashira. While some of the bubbles transform into the jellyfish, many do not, and yet still retain the same capabilities and some of the same usages. The bubbles are capable of completely enveloping large things or people, encapsulating them within. Even more notably, these bubbles are capable of intercepting things that attempt to breach their surface. A large cero blast could find itself being trapped inside of one of En-You Souji’s bubbles, while its innate and destructive power gets siphoned away rendering it completely useless. Those that attempt to sever the bubbles or the jellyfish alike are quickly disappointed, only to find out that what they struck has simply separated and multiplied by two. The bubbles independently are helpful when performing surgeries, able to isolate one liquid from another, while also being used to store things within them. This makes them extremely helpful during blood transfusions and other similar procedures. It is also not uncommon for Kaisou to fill the Fourth Division’s hot springs up with these bubbles, allowing all in attendance to partake in a bubble bath that would restore the vitality of even the most dilapidated individuals.
– To many people’s surprise, Kaisou actually has aspirations of becoming a Captain someday. The reason–however–would surprise no one. Someone once overheard him fawning over the idea of a dazzling white coat to go with the rest of his uniform, and it seems he hasn’t been able to shake the thought of it since.
— Kaisou is a character inspired by Yumichika from Bleach, Sanji from One Piece, and Yuga Aoyama from My Hero Academia.
– Kaisou constantly contributes to the Seireitei Communication Column with dating advice, appearance ratings, speed dating columns, and even mystery dates!
– Kaisou is personally confident that his Zanpakuto–perhaps when combined with the necessary research—could be capable of curing something as profound as hollowfication. This is primarily based on its ability to isolate and destroy impurities, and there is no larger impurity than hollowfication.
Personal Relationships
- Sango Tsutsui - The loud and boisterous woman was at one point in time, looked at as a nuisance to Kaisou beyond measure. This of course, was an initial judgment, and was quickly dispelled once the two actually exchanged words. The woman was primarily seen as Tōsu’s absurdly large shadow that seemed to go wherever he went, ironically making the two of them stand out while Tōsu would much rather remain under the radar. Kaisou often praises her makeup and carries on about how she has models’ legs, and in response she feeds the man’s ego and returns the praises. The two of them have a sort of mutualism, and he’s grown from tolerating her, to actually caring for her.
- Tōsu Shohei - Undoubtedly the man’s closest friend and confidant, Tōsu and Kaisou have been ‘aware’ of each other since the academy days but did not become close until much later. Kaisou unintentionally uncovered the affliction the man was suffering from and made it his life mission to not only treat it, but cure it. This was not made out of care for the man, but instead his own pride; there was no challenge he was yet to conquer, no ailment he was unable to cure. This would prove untrue after encountering Tōsu’s disease. Even still, he began to treat the perceived 10th Division slacker quite consistently, and it was then the bond had formed. Mostly, Tōsu talked and Kaisou listened, but it was his own silence that formed the bonds of friendship. Tōsu preferred to keep his disease a secret, and Kaisou could never sever Doctor-Patient confidentiality. He soon learned that the man was simply putting on a facade because of his dislike for the spotlight, but is truly one of the more talented, and hardworking individuals Kaisou has come to know.
- Junko Izumi - Lieutenant Junko, though kind in nature, has simply come to tolerate Kaisou. While his personality can be rather obnoxious, she cannot deny the man’s talent as a healer and his overall value in the division. He has been seen—at times—harmlessly flirting with his superior just to get a smile from her if she’s having a down day, or giving her a small compliment when he feels she hasn’t heard one in a while. Overall, he makes it his goal to appeal to the good side of his superior that he cares for and respects.
- Yū Nakamoto - Captain Nakamoto, The Fairy, the young man of many names is a prodigy and an infamous name throughout the Seireitei. Kaisou treats his Captain in a similar way to his lieutenant, always brown nosing him while also soaking up as much as he can when learning from the man. Although young, he is a valued mentor, standing as the creator of a plethora of techniques that Kaisou himself uses consistently. Despite not having any interest in men at all, Kaisou is not above flirting with his Captain either, anything to entertain his own ego and to get him through the day. Captain Nakamoto, although a superior, is also considered a friend. Among all Captains, Kaisou respects him most, and has even denied lieutenant positions in other divisions to remain by the Captain’s side.
