Character Name: Kiyobu Kouken
(後見; "Joyous Warrior")—(喜武; "Guardian")
Kiyobu Kouken (後見喜武, “Joyous Warrior Guardian”) is an Academy Student in the Seireitei. His mother and father raised him in a large aristocratic home in District 1 of the Rokungai. He was introduced to his family's more profound background and the Kouken Shinkou (‘規約信仰’, “Guardian Creed”), which was meant to just bring him up in nobility and teach him how to lead a more spiritual and compassionate life. The Kouken Shinkou ultimately influenced him and made him promise his parents to be a role model Shinigami and pushed him to seek out how to become a Shinigami, leading him to join the Academy, hoping to learn the skills necessary to protect Soul Society.
Tenured as an Academy Student, Kiyobu was moulded quickly into being dutiful and striving to be a good student, supported by his teachers' teachings. Most of his free time in the Academy is consumed by gathering information and the rules of Seireitei and all that it encompasses, so he can simultaneously learn all the loopholes around the rules and enforce them while staying true to his purpose.
Actual Age: 149
Race: Soul Born
Birthday: October 16th
Gender: Male
Height: 191cm (6’2”)
Weight: 85kg
Blood Type: O
Affiliation: Soul Society; Seireitei, Shin'ō Academy
Profession: Academy Student
Title: N/A
Position: N/A
Division: Spiritual Arts Academy—(真央霊術院, Shinōreijutsuin)
Partner(s): No one
Base of Operations: Seireitei, Soul Society
Notable Features: Donning the Academy Uniform, Kiyobu stands out as a Student among the many Shinigami in Seireitei. He has lush, brunette hair and ocean blue eyes. However, this isn’t what makes him noticeable from the rest that fit a similar description. He also has a parted choker that frames his throat; whether it will remain just an accessory or something more he intends to do with it later is up for his creative mind to process.
Personality: Kiyobu’s main pastimes are practising Zanjutsu, playing chess and meditating. Because of his talent in chess, he was commonly found in the Lush Forest in District 1, a few blocks away from his own home, challenging older people in nearby parks. His love for chess had developed more in his younger years as it complimented his meditation, with the patience of each move being carefully calculated, planned and executed. The slightest lapse in concentration could lose a pawn, or an overly aggressive action could lead to a checkmate for the opposing player. Chess helped to train his mind to reach a deeper state of relaxation, making it easier for him to connect with his deeper self with a clearer mind. Later in his life and in the Academy, even to his chagrin, it is the same technique he uses in an attempt to open a connection to his Inner World and Zanpakuto Spirit.
Born in District 1 and in a household that could trace its ancestry and clan back centuries, Kiyobu was brought up with aristocratic values—shaping his blue-blooded mannerisms. He is humble with a soft-spoken demeanour that belies his warrior prowess. He is also loyal and dedicated; during his time in the Academy, he grew to deeply respect Shinigami and the more significant role they played in protecting Soul Society. Despite this, he still possesses a dry sense of humour and sarcastic wit as part of his charm, and he’s naturally defiant with a touch of cynicism.
Coming from an old clan with history does not without its traditions and scriptures, which he abides by even if they come incompatible with situations he may be presented with within his future, obstacles he will come to pass when the time is right. Called the Kouken Shinkou (‘規約信仰’, “Guardian Creed”) are a set of rules and tenets written in a time by the founders of his Clan aeons back when chaos reigned rampantly. It has evolved for centuries and applied to all members of his family. Among the precepts of the Code was a rule forbidding the killing of anyone unarmed and seeking revenge. The scripture also emphasises compassion as an essential aspect of his life, teaching that all lives are precious.
“If you define yourself by the power to take life, the desire to dominate, to possess…then you have nothing.”—Kiyobu Kouken
All in all, Kiyobu is a gentle-natured soul who is compassionate, and with the upbringing with the Kouken Shinkou (‘規約信仰’, “Guardian Creed”) helps keep him astray from negative emotions that estranged Shinigami in the past to evil, like Kaname Tōsen for example. Because of this and his promise to be a role model, Shinigami, that protects Soul Society, he was not merry and spoke little growing up, though he learned to talk early and seemed older than his years. His ability to play Chess at a very high level is also attributed to his intelligence and strategic mind, always appearing ahead of people his age. He turns to the pursuit of justice for peace, prosperity and the greater good, wanting to be there for the people if something wrong happens and enforce the law. One of the odes to his just and compassionate personality is in the Academy. He is known for peacefully diffusing conflicts and arguments with words before disagreements become more severe, and bullying occurs.
Reiryoku Level: Immense Spiritual Power Reiryoku Control: Novice Control
Coming into the world of Soul Society, and together with his name is his tremendous amount of reiryoku. He speculates ever since he could remember during his meditations, he always sensed it and described himself to be in a sizeable archaic hallway with no end, extending itself as far as the eye could see and as far as one might go. Over time as he became more in tune with himself and during meditation, he felt like he had an out-of-body experience. It was as if his spirit were suspended in the cosmos, floating, entirely under the control of its influence. Willful and predetermined though he felt, he felt every action of his own was governed not from within but from without. Like a float tossed about in an endless sea. Upon this realisation, Kiyobu felt he was insignificant to the font of power inside himself and concluded he wouldn't be able to control it if left unchecked. This further supplemented his desire to join the Academy to seek how to reign himself in. Kiyobu believes that if he did not have the habit of meditating daily in his day-to-day life, it would’ve consumed him if no one intervened.
In the Academy, Kiyobu has learned the basics of controlling his power. He showed quite a natural affinity for it, as he was unknowingly doing it for years with some degree of success which aided in masking his power, albeit not entirely, as it grew to seep out of him more and more over time. But enough to go unnoticed for some time. Regardless, he is known to be a Novice; still, he expressed a great deal of patience and acceptance and agreed that it would take a great deal of time to tame its current unyielding nature.
Sensing Reiryoku: Basic
There's not much to say here, but regardless of his reiryoku, his capabilities are currently limited to detecting and locating the likes of Pluses, Jibakurei, Tsukirei, standard Hollows, and basic Souls and low-seated Shinigami. He hopes that after becoming a Shinigami, his senses will improve over time, and he will learn various sensing techniques to aid him in pursuit and combat.
Reiatsu: Specialist
Having received some formal training during the Academy, Kiyobu’s reiatsu has only very recently become more manageable for him. Very new and recent, he only just barely considers himself a specialist. Because of the amount of Reiryoku he has, it fluctuates wildly and acts as a window to his soul or internal feelings. Years and years of meditation have helped keep it tamer, and he feels confident in being able to contain himself to remain hidden when necessary. Otherwise, it does occasionally leak out of him. When forcefully exerted, depending on the level, from a low seated Shinigami to an Immense level, Kiyobu’s Reiatsu feels heavy, imposing and cold. The heavy feeling remains stagnant and does not change, corresponding to how much he releases.
Reiatsu Appearance: White & Blue Outline Reiatsu Shape: Amorphous
Without a clearly defined shape or form, Kiyobu’s reiatsu emits wildly. There comes a period after exerting himself for extended periods during training when it looks to try to shape itself but quickly recedes into its formless wild mass. During arduous training sessions with Nana Nokoribi, she has stated that his reiatsu could take shape when he unlocks his Zanpakuto.
The colour of his Reiatsu is predominantly white with a blue outline glow.
Reiatsu Type: Standard
Zanjutsu Level: Expert Swordsman
Each student has a motivation and mindset behind choosing their preferred specialisation. For Kiyobu, the art of Zanjutsu was appealing, and Kiyobu would go on in his years in the Academy to be considered top of his class.
Since entering the Academy and holding his Asauchi for the first time, Kiyobu was immediately drawn to it and the art of swordsmanship. His insatiable hunger for training in the art of swordsmanship led him to favour Nana Nokoribi more and more as a teacher and try to squeeze into her lessons more. He was even going as far as to approach other students who wanted to participate in other combat areas in the later years of the Academy, ultimately swapping some of his Kidō lessons for more Zanjutsu lessons. As time passed, Kiyobu’s ability with the sword greatly improved.
His family’s name and personal goal greatly define him to become a role-model Shinigami, and a great defender of Soul Society. Kiyobu began investigating and refining his teachings received by Nana with the best defensive capabilities that would ultimately keep him and the ones he loved protected most effectively. His studies and training led him to Iaijutsu (居合術), a style of swordsmanship that involves quick, precise draws from the sheathe, striking the opponent, and removing blood from the sword before re-sheathing. It is a form of Zanjutsu specialising in counter-attacks and less aggression. His Iaijutsu is made more powerful by incorporating his reiatsu, developing a personalised style called the Kagentsu (‘下弦月’, “Waning Crescent Moon”). When his Asauchi is still unsheathed, Kiyobu also often uses the scabbard as a weapon for blunt strikes or to block an enemy's attack. Due to his style, Kiyobu commonly wields his blade with one hand, holding the scabbard with the other. Inspired by Nana’s swordsmanship with her duel-wielding Zanjutsu, it is clear she had a significant influence on his growth. Kagentsu is something still very new to Kiyobu. It’s a project he seeks to perfect, whereby Iaijutsu (居合術) is seen as just a counter-attack form of combat, Kiyobu seeks to refine, grow and evolve, perfecting it into the art of defence.
His Zanjutsu training focuses on using tight blade work to defend himself. Deflect, block and riposte strikes or projectiles, and allow him to protect himself from multiple incoming attacks simultaneously. He has honed his ability with his sword for it to practically wield it as if it were an extension of his hands. He can deliver skilful and accurate strikes to weak points with great precision, cutting only precisely what he wants. His skill and efficiency in Iaijutsu allow him to draw his sword and cut his opponent in successful quick strikes before resheathing his weapon, so much so that he’s capable of timing his resheathing precisely the moment the cuts become visible. Kiyobu—while seemingly effortlessly—can imbue his Reiatsu, subconsciously using an iota of his Zanpakuto’s power to fuel more powerful strikes. The scarring marks of each strike leave behind ghostly blue markings, which non-vigorously combust in his Reiatsu to further push away each side of the thing being separated. Enhancing his cutting power and leading him to sever things otherwise considered too dense to cut through, such as higher seated Shinigami and higher tiered Hollows.
Additional skills he possesses with the sword include projecting his Reiatsu from his blade to send out a slice that cuts through the air and dense objects like Steel, Rock Formations, etc.—making for a solid, far-reaching blow. The same is said if he were to stab with his sword, focusing his Reiatsu into a single piercing stab like an immaterial bullet.
Over time with who Kiyobu fundamentally is, and although he is capable of aggression, the way he orchestrates his blade is more defensively. A symbol and characteristic of his part-pacifistic nature. This kind of zanjutsu taught him that there is strength and nobility in restraint. Nana has critiqued his way of the sword and how she interpreted it, saying that it lacks aggression. Both Nana and Kiyobu carry differing philosophies on the blade. Still, despite their differences, he strives to be a good student and be her favourite from his graduating class in his final year.
Known Skills:
Hohō Level: Shunpo Practitioner
Learning the basics of Hohō, Kiyobu invested time in his training to be as fast as someone labelled as a practitioner. As he trained arduously in Zanjutsu, he was also required to work on his body endurance and stamina. The by-product of all this training was his increase in speed and footwork, helping him close gaps quicker in Shunpo. Self admittingly, this was not his focus in the Academy, so his speed could very well be outmatched by peers who spend more time refining and sharpening their skills in Shunpo. But it is a later goal for him to focus on as a Shinigami.
Known Skills: Shunpo
Hakuda Level: Novice
Although still regarded as only a Novice, Kiyobu does supplement his Zanjutsu with unarmed hand-to-hand combat training should he ever be in a situation disarmed from using his sword. Initially very clumsy and awkward with his hands, Kiyobu eventually learned basic martial art techniques of correctly positioning himself when throwing a punch, dodging and the necessary footwork required to add more force to his blows. With time in the Academy, he learned to weave his Reiatsu to empower his punches.
While maintaining a reasonable attendance rate for each lesson throughout the years, a result of learning Hakuda gave him a high degree of acrobatics and strengthened his body. Characteristics of his Zanjutsu loans from.
Known Skills: -
Kidō Skill Level: Novice
The least practised, and knowledgeable skill Kiyobu has. He sacrificed Kidō the most for advancement in Zanjutsu. Does he regret it? No. Kiyobu never showed much interest in learning spells and would jump at the opportunity to find a loophole and not attend a class if it could mean he got to spend more time in the training dojo with his sword.
Of course, Kiyobu did learn enough. The bare minimum he requires to pass the class.

Skills and Abilities:
Kagentsu (‘下弦月’, “Waning Crescent Moon”)
A new style of Zanjutsu was created and is still in its very early stages, essentially a more powerful version of Iaijutsu (居合術) by incorporating his reiatsu. He can empower each strike to exceed what is typically expected from his level.
Equipment: Asauchi, Denreishinki
Zanpakuto Name: Namahage (生剥; “Fire Rash Peeling”) (NOT YET OBTAINED IN RP)
Zanpakuto Appearance: Kiyobu’s zanpakuto is a Katana of slightly longer length. Their Tsukamaki handle has a pattern closer to a real katana, giving it the traditional diamond shape in the negative space. The tsuba/handguard is gold and a deep navy blue, shaped like an octagon with two trapezoidal halves, the gold Habaki/fuller is also the same. The Hamon featured is a Kawazuko Choji or tadpole head clove-styled Hamon similar to those found on blades historically made by real-life Osafune Nagamitsu. The edge has also been given prominent temper lines. The scabbard is onyx blue, made of traditional lacquered wood, and features several metallic ornaments on its far end.
Zanpakuto Spirit: She is seen as an exquisite and gentle woman, embodying the principles of the ideal Japanese woman: "Yamato Nadeshiko". However, underneath her calm atmosphere, Namahage is a manipulative and vicious sadist who lacks empathy for people she deems weak. Her thoughts on Kiyobu are just that. She dissents from his compassionate nature and views that all lives are precious. She believes his avoidance of conflict is a weakness, which will only result in his stagnation, decline and death as much as she enjoys the thought of toying with him, putting him through pain emotionally and physically. Deep down, she genuinely cares for him but wants him to earn her respect. Until then, she gets pleasure in agonising him. Namahage is Kiyobu’s opposite, representing the iota of doubt in his mind, with him being the way he is.
Inner World: Kiyobu’s inner world appears geographically positioned on a mountain above the clouds and against the night sky. In the black heavens above, roads of fire in the colour of Namahage’s flames dance and flicker like auroras. On this mountain is a citadel at the centre with the single largest structure—a pagoda—towering amongst the walls and lesser buildings which are surrounded and dotted by other buildings in the architecture of the Edo-style period. All these buildings seem to have lights on or appear to be inhabited, but this is not true. Every door is locked. The main road goes over a large bridge leading up to the citadel's gates at the Pagoda’s entrance, and the only distinguishable avenue one will instinctively follow. It is in this Pagoda that Namahage resides quietly, awaiting Kiyobu’s arrival without giving him any welcome. Hints and gestures of chuckles and eerie laughter echo from the building, as if Namahage is watching or could feel his presence, entertained by wondering if he’ll make it this time. When Kiyobu enters the world, it’s always on the main bridge and cold enough that it pierces his clothes and the flesh–down to the bone. This world is like a continuous nightmare. He’s immediately affected by the cold and, in complete confusion, cannot make it across the bridge before he’s reeled back to the real world.
Release Phrase: “Consume, Namahage.”
Shikai: When released, Namahage’s blades transform into a chokutō. The steelwork appears as if it’s fallen below freezing, the black steel being a motif for necrosis while the edge appears as blue steel. Diamond holes are dotted along the top of the blade, acting like exhaust vents for his power. His Shikai drains the warmth and heat to create an increasingly cold environment by exposing its unique properties to its surroundings.
Shikai Special Ability: Namahage's unique ability produces what appears to be pale blue flames. Contrary to conventional flame and a fire-type zanpakuto, the reaction is not vigorous and releases no heat—but instead cold—feeling colder the closer one draws to them.
Shiranui (不知火, “Unknown Fire”) is the name of its power, the ghostly flames consuming the heat of not only the surrounding area to fuel it but those it comes into contact with as well, robbing them of their warmth and heat as if desperately trying to obtain a warmth for itself that will never come. Those touched or consumed by these flames find their body or, instead, that area on their body colder, rigid and almost solid as the flesh and tissue discolours and freezes over, the flesh quickly turning black as the flesh and tissue die from necrosis. It is believed that even after minor contact with the flames, it still takes time for the warmth to return to their body and for the hardened tissue to soften back after distancing themselves from them.
⦿ Some characteristics of Kiyobu draw inspiration from Kaname Tōsen, without him being evil.
⦿ The Kouken Family has been around since before the dawn of the Seireitei, small and keeping to their traditions. They managed to survive and live on to the present day, maintaining a lot of old money they do not go around showing.
⦿ His theme song, as chosen by me, is "The Score" by Enemies

Personal Relationships:
Nana Nokoribi: It isn’t unusual for her name to stand out among his relationships with teachers in the Academy. Kiyobu has spent the most hours training with Nana—growing to respect her—to hone his Zanjutsu deeply and help him excel in his learning.
It was because of Nana that he set such high expectations of himself—and learned his place in the greater scheme of things within Seireitei—to hope to be no less than her skill in Zanjutsu one day. Kiyobu appreciates her, and although they share differing thoughts on his personalised style of Zanjutsu—he’s more defensive—he loves to jest her about it charmingly.
There’s no doubt that Kiyobu experienced the most character growth in their lessons together.
Shinjō Matsunaga: Kiyobu first met Shinjō when he was very young. Their relationship as brothers was rocky, but the two soon grew to see each other as siblings nonetheless. He often clashed with Shinjō for his frequent disobedience and lack of display of respect for the family he came into. However, because of Kiyobu's compassionate nature, he always secretly defended Shinjō at every turn and made Shinjō's mistakes his own.
At some point during their time together in the Academy, Kiyobu secretly experienced his own form of jealousy when he noticed his brother excelling in all schools of combat. Giving him more of a competitive reason to at least best him in the area he loved above all else—Zanjutsu—he ruminates in besting his brother out of joy. Shinjō being the only family inside Seireitei that Kiyobu has, he hopes that their relationship won't strain too far and that there's still a possibility of mending things.
While early on in the Academy, he did experience feelings of jealousy. Lately, these feelings appear to be subsiding as he has become more confident. Having no qualms about sacrificing other schools of combat to further his ability with the sword to exceed his brother's.
